  2. Struggling last place BoSox (yes, behind Baltimore) up 6-0 early in Atlanta courtesy of a 3rd inning Rafael Devers Grand Slam
  3. Nice cut off by Nimmo + good relay easily cuts down the second run at the plate.
  4. Edgy MD wrote: Those of us blocked from viewing would appreciate very vivid descriptions of events. Both balls off JDD's bat were smoked even though they resulted in three, and nearly four, outs. Can you not get Nats radio from your locale?
  5. That Naylor/Guardians game was wild: * they got one in the 8th -- on a Naylor two-out double * six in the 9th, capped by the Naylor two-out/1st pitch Grand Slam, an inning which started with an Andres Ginenez HR * one more in the 10th, this time on an Andres Gimenez double (the old leadoff RBI Double thx to the Manfred Man rule) * and finally three in the 11th to win it on ... wait for it, a two out Naylor 3R HR Gimenez, btw, slashing .351/.363/571 for the Guardians so far this year. OK that walk-rate suxx and it's only 80 PAs so he's not quite playing full time (mostly as a 2B) ... but still. The other half of the Lindor ransom, Amed Rosario OTOH, .220/.278/.260 (22 hits w/2 2Bs & 1 3B) on 100 PAs so more or less full-time including two starts in LF (where he looked awful).
  6. I suspect what the book Willets cites is saying is not that the kid who grew up from a Liverpool FC onesie to season-ticket holding/red scarf wearing super-fan as an adult will suddenly change his spots and claim to be an Everton fan on a whim, only that that type of one-team-forever fan represents a smaller percentage of total fans than is generally believed. I've often thought that there are three types of NY-area baseball fans: 1/3 who root for the Mets, 1/3 for the Yanx, and the final 1/3 for whoever is winning at that particular moment. Made up numbers for sure, but I think the concept is right even though that final third is not so much jumping on and off bandwagons (at least not in their own minds) as they are drifting in and out of baseball fandom as new players and eras capture their fancy, not to mention all the headlines. So some of those who caught 'baseball fever' with the rise of mid-80s Mets stopped following the sport itself as the team skidded into their early '90s dumpster fires, but then maybe a new group of friends and/or love interest got them into the Yanx of the late '90s because now they were the stars in town and it rekindled how much fun pennant races could be. So, yeah, that concept doesn't really apply to the die-hards but not everyone spends their spare time on NYM message boards. Having said all that, I've said here on several occasions that I've never been as pissed off at Met fans as I was over the ones who declared it OK to root for those MFY teams squads of the late '90s "because of Doc & Darryl & Coney" while also somehow deciding that George had morphed into a nice guy. If I actually believed in karma I'd be blaming them for Causing the Yanx run of WS years and, btw, Fuck Doc & Darryl & Coney!

But it never bothered me that we never had one the way it clearly did some Met fans and, I strongly suspect, Wilpon-era NYM culture where middling-type milestones often seemed "over-celebrated" (Franco's round number save, Lenny Harris's PH record, Piazza's most HRs for a C) as if in a forced attempt to enrichen NYM lore with those accomplishments. I wasn't around for Qualls, but my recollection is the “no no-hitters” issue first became prevalent towards the end of Nolan Ryan's career, when he threw his sixth and seventh no-hitters (1990-91) — well before any of the “Wilpon-era culture” stuff you mention. I also recall the issue being magnified when Doc and Cone threw no-hitters for that other team. I generally try not to care too much what happens over there in the Bronx, but those two (particularly Doc's) were not the happy memories they could have been. I'm saying I suspect a convergence of two fronts on this matter. There were definitely fans who angst-ed and/or felt diminished over the no no-no 'taint' -- and, yes, that was exacerbated by ex-NYMs throwing them elsewhere, particularly in the Bronx. I also felt that there was a top-down mentality pushing for more NYM milestones to commemorate even ones which were minor and were partially, or even largely, accomplished elsewhere. A no-hitter isn't a minor thing but it's not like the absence of one should be seen as a failure either. And while I obviously don't Know that there was pressure, or even direct instructions, from 'upstairs' to keep Santana in the game so that the franchise could finally check that box, it wouldn't surprise me if there were.
  8. I'm closer to the JCL/Mags version of things on this one. Sure, I wanted a NYM no-no. I watched the Qualls game as a 10 y/o. And then later remember being particularly riveted by several Rick Reed close calls. In fact, in some ways I got a kick out of the luck-driven oddity of great pitching history without a gem attached. I never felt it diminished anything. No, I don't blame Santana's injury on the game itself. He had several bad games immediately following the no-no but then some quite good ones right after that including 3 straight starts where he allowed a total of 2 Runs on 12 hits over 20 innings so if there was an effect it was a somewhat delayed and selective one. It all reminds me somewhat of how the anti-World Baseball Classic segment of baseball would blame ANY injury suffered by ANY WBC participant at ANY time over the course of the ensuing season as direct cause-and-effect proof to be laid at the fee of on the very existence of that Springtime mini-tournament, because that fit their pre-determined conclusion. But just because A preceded B doesn't mean A caused B. Could it have? Sure. So could a million other factors.
  9. The Best CPF threads go off topic.
  10. Reds win. Thaaaa Reds win!! So with a chance to sweep a DH what do they do? ... have two pitchers combine to serve up 3 taters in the top of the 1st of course. And this to a Pirate lineup featuring five sub-.210 hitters, most of whom I couldn't pick out of a police lineup. But the game is still young and hope springs eternal. Or something like that.
  11. Yanx (day game) already postponed for today, making it two in a row for them.
  12. =kcmets post_id=91575 time=1651929634 user_id=53] Today - Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 52. Breezy, with a northeast wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Tonight - Rain, mainly before 3am. Low around 43. Breezy, with a northeast wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%.
  13. Lolich & Freehan, 325 W & M were 20 starts behind to begin the season so they'll need stay simultaneously healthy for around 2/3 of the season. Not hard, but also not a given considering the mileage on the tires.
  14. StL starter Adam Wainwrihht to the IL (specific reason not disclosed). He and Yadi are within reach of the most tandem starts in history but they have to, you know, start enough games together in what is expected to be the Swan song year for each.
  15. Already postponed tonight, still well in advance of starting times so there may wind up being more: LAD @ Cubs TEX @ Yanx NYM @ Phillies TOR @ Guardians That's more 1/3 of the non-dome games on the sked (4 of 11) For us to follow that pretty much leaves Brewers at Braves Both the Nats (Anaheim) and Marlins (Padres) are late starts out on the left coast
  16. =seawolf17 post_id=91543 time=1651866742 user_id=91] This whole thread is an all-time classic.
  17. Do you suppose it's Really raining in the Brotherly city or are the Phils just too embarrassed after last night and this is their excuse?
  18. Last time a team overcame a six run deficit in the 9th ... the Nats against the Mets in 2019
  19. Yup. Two liners just over Bohm's glove, but he's 6' 4" so Barkley likely wouldn't have helped. They had 3 hits entering the 9th. They notched 8 in the 9th including two infield singles (Hustle!!). Marte's hits started it and capped it.
  20. Yeah, I needed sub-titles for some of that commentary.
  21. This was one of those games where I trot out the old saw that if you're going not pitch, and are going to not hit, and are going to not field ... then you might as well do not do them all on the same night. And yet they won anyway. That's two miracle wins in the first month. Still no two game losing streak.
  22. Ho Lee Shit!! I turned it off -- was catching up on BARRY -- when I happened to check the score (still top 9). At that point I had to go back and see how it happened. So I just saw the final out. And now don't ever tell me that Diaz doesn't know how to close out a 'Big' game.
  23. Y'know, this Medina guy looks OK but, surprisingly, is neither funky nor cold.
  24. If asked for my favorite band I'd check if they meant band or just artist/singer. And if the answer was band then I wouldn't include the likes of Dylan. So while I didn't start this topic, the qualifiers were band and American, thus rendering much of your original list invalid. p.s., I'm not picking Aerosmith either
  25. Getting a bit into semantics here but I wouldn't call Dylan a band because his stuff was with so many different musicians over the years. Springsteen, OTOH, even though technically billed as a solo act, has made the vast majority of his output with a remarkably stable backing unit for over half a century.
