  1. Well, at least they're not stranding oodles of runners tonight.
  2. I assume the relief corps behind Kuhl is known as 'The Gang'
  3. Texarkana is NOT also on the Louisiana border, Gary.
  4. Chris Bassitt vs Chad Kuhl who, aside from being able to sign his autograph very quickly, hasn't got a whole lot else going for him right now. [20 Starts, 6-7, 5.16, 1.52] But as the cop says to Jake Gittes at the end of the movie, 'Forget Jake, it's Coors Field' (at least I think that's what he said) Lots of leadoff runners on last night. Not enough bringin' 'em around.
  5. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The 35th state entered the Union on June 20, 1863, splitting from Virginia during the Civil War. Like Nevada, WV was also a state admitted to the Union by Lindoln and pals by steamrolling the rules governing such stuff.
  6. =G-Fafif post_id=105396 time=1661536701 user_id=55] I believe the less than 10 days exception is made once the minor league season ends.
  7. Well we get COL while they get StL, but next week They get COL while we get LAD so we need to do more than break even here.
  8. Chad ochoseis wrote: Bring him in for the 9th if it's still a save situation? I vote no. He got the first two outs on 5 pitches ... but then the rest of the inning took too long, so Ottavino.
  9. I gotta say, though, fans playing air trumpets look pretty lame. Mr. and Mrs. Met can pull it off. Non-big-headed humans ... not so much.
  10. The phrase 'Playing With Fire' describes that half inning in both the positive and the negative sense.
  11. I was envisioning a Vogelbach hard single to RF ... and then getting thrown out at 1st. Well it didn't happen but the net result is the same.
  12. Yeah, we're a terrible pitch to Alonso from being in a 1-1 tie and, as in the MFY games, are leaving small villages stranded.
  13. I don't like the trend of this game.
  14. Kind of a late start to our Twibbing this week, but better late than never. - Phils, who are finishing up with the Reds tonight (they've won the first three) before getting the Pirates. Aaaaaand they'll be getting Bryce Harper back starting Friday, most likely still as a full-time DH as the hand is healed but not yet the elbow) On the flip side, Zack Wheeler is going to the IL which kind of suxx not just for him but for us as well as we're done with them but the Braves are not. Phils & Braves have seven left vs each other starting with next week so Wheels will be unavailable for that one. - Braves are off tonight but will be in St Loo for the weekend so they might even lose a game. After that, THEY get the Rox so we need as many ATL L's on the board as we can get. - Pitt rookie Oneil Cruz, y'know their 6' 7" SS, smacked a ball 122+ mph the other day which is apparently a record in this stat-cast era. He's having himself a rough first half-season, but there's a whole lotta athleticism going on there.
  15. And that was three innings ago. It's up to like 44 to one by now.
  16. That might have been the worst 3-0 semi-pitch-around pitch Ever. Missed his spot by maybe a foot or more.
  17. All Boras is saying in that first linked article is that the Braves helped win their WS with good trades at the deadline. Nothing illegal or even remotely shady about anything there. Trades for those players were available for anyone. The second one was a bigger deal (which I don't remember) but the penalties for it don't seem inconsequential: forfeiture of 13 international prospects, future restrictions in the int'l market over a three year period, and a loss of a regular draft pick. But whatever they did, it can't explain how they get guys from the drawing board to finished products so quickly and successfully both from non-drafted foreign players (sometimes high bonus, sometimes not) and from less than top draftees.
  18. Remember when many of us were told, when we were learning baseball back in the day, how a 2/1 K/BB ratio was good for a pitcher? Now it's a small sample size and times have changed things a bit, but deGrom is currently carrying a 39/1 ratio for this truncated season. 39 to ONE !!
  19. Everybody scouts everywhere. There aren't a lot of secrets in the world of elite amateur talent and the days of a scout offering some unknown kid a deal because he liked his arm when he saw him throwing rocks at crows back behind his barn somewhere are long gone if they even existed at all. The bigger mystery is the speed in which these non-elite draft picks (3rd & 11th rounds) rocket through the minors (essentially skipping AA & AAA) and then not just succeed but thrive at the major league level. Harris will almost certainly be RoY and is likely to see MVP votes while Grissom, at this rate, might be 2nd in RoY despite only being called up on August 10th.
  20. 7:10 EDT Rookie RH Ryan Feltner [12 G, 11 Starts, 5.88 ERA, 1.39 WHIP] vs Jacob deGrom So what have the Rox been up to since we took two of three at their place back in mid-May? Losing mostly. In last place in the NL West and on pace for a 70-win season.
  21. =vtmet7 post_id=105260 time=1661386524 user_id=80] the braves did also cheat or bend the rules in order to stock their farm system...and when caught, they didn't really have that severe of a penalty
  22. A more balanced schedule won't necessarily make a division winner 'better' strictly by virtue of owning a better record but it will reduce the odds that a team can win a division with a sub-.500 record and go on to the playoffs from there, something that should be, but likely isn't, an embarrassment to the leagues where this regularly happens (NBA & NHL) or the one (NFL) where it occasionally has in the past and is more likely to do so moving forward. The formula is basically for the teams within a division to beat each other up so each finishes relatively close to .500 against each other and then for each of the team to all to get their collective asses kicked during out of division games. Reducing the percentage of the former while jacking up the percentage of the latter just makes it more likely is all and I wonder if the honchos at MLB stopped even for a second to consider this.
  23. =bmfc1 post_id=105237 time=1661366863 user_id=73] Off on Memorial Day AND Labor Day.
  24. Always like to have those Mondays in July free. The cost of playing all 29 teams is the reduction in intra-division games* so just two visits to and from the rest of the NL East clubs rather than three, or 13 games rather than the current 19. So we're done with Atlanta by mid-August. This actually increases the odds that a division will be won by a sub-.500 team (see the NFL where in-division games have gone from 50% of each team's sked to 35%) but no one seems to think of that (except me). Still one visit to and from each NL West & Central club, plus one visit to OR from each AL team except for the Yanx where it'll be the same two-and-two as it was this year. And one trip to: OAK, DET, HOU, BOS, KCR, BAL, MIN Plus one visit from TBR, CLE, TOR, CWS, LAA, TEX, SEA * because even though Bud Selig liked to couch the introduction of inter-league play as if those games were somehow in addition to existing games rather than instead of others, psst: it wasn't really true
  25. So how's this thread going? Bascially we're down to a two game lead over a team that's the defending champs and has been 8.5 games better than us since the first of June. So not only can this lead disappear inside a 48 hour span but the fact that we've got the Dodgers coming up makes it almost likely. It seems like this whole winning the division strategy thing comes down to six words: But we've got an easy schedule! That doesn't exactly instill me with a ton of confidence.
