  1. Old baseball adage: a good groundkeeper can win you three or four games a year.
  2. Scherzer out after scattering one hit over five.
  3. Four-plus innings worth of pitches just to get thru three is a lot considering no hits allowed.
  4. That GiDP saved an already high 1st inning pitch count from potentially blowing up.
  5. This pitching match-up didn't go well for us last time.
  6. Is Gary Cohen trying to be annoying this year Seemed annoyed with Keith right there He was definitely annoyed that Keith so easily went to the line about how increased inter-league play is something "the fans want these days". Gary immediately shot back with words to the effect of: "Which fans? What percentage? How many?" and, in doing so, got Keith to retract his statement and admit that it's really just MLB claiming this is true and we're supposed to take their word for it that there's some kind of proof backing this up and not just a continuation of Party line pr going back to Bud Selig's oft-repeated mantra that inter-league play was a "gift to the fans". Gary then went on to frame it as merely the next step in the plan to dismantle the leagues in favor of regional realignment.
  7. So after my pronouncement a couple days ago concerning the near invincibility of the 2023 Braves, they go out and get swept in their home opening series by the Padres this weekend culminating with a 10-2 drubbing on SNB. I concede that my previous projection about them winning 140 games this year may have been just slightly influenced by a moment of frustration brought on by their sweep of StL while the Mets were being non-competative vs Milwaukee. Just maybe. Would be nice if we could further erase the taste of last week by handling our upcoming series with SDP a lot better than they did, not to mention a lot better than we did last October.
  8. I don't think there was any attempt there to hit the catcher, more just a bad and awkward slide than a dirty one. In the head-on angle you can see indecision on Cruz's part as he got closer.
  9. Baby Bro Diaz blows a 2R save opp for the Reds in Philly as the Phightins' score 3 in the 9th after being shut out for 8 innings.
  10. Curtiss: the extra S is for Saving the rest of the pen's collective butts.
  11. Good thing Senga kept his glove over his mouth during the mound conference so as to foil those Japanese lip readers in the Marlin dugout.
  12. Bobby Orr
  13. Edgy MD wrote: Pete's homer was the glorious result of two mound meetings. That's one of my proposed rule changes: if the Mgr or PC go out to "settle their guy down" and the result is an XBH then that team loses mound visit privileges from the dugout for a week. or something like that ... I'm willing to fudge on the details
  14. Pete made that ball leave Mr. Rogers' neighborhood in a hurry.
  15. I know that Francisco is Venezuelan rather than Puerto Rican, but I wonder if his choice of #4 (assuming it was his) is a nod to Yadier.
  16. I think the giant shoulder patch has Met players off balance. Hard to hit when you're listing to one side.
  17. Not a perfect analogy, but still a situation where just because you can price gouge your captive audience doesn't mean you have to. And the Masters [CROSSOUT]fans[/CROSSOUT], sorry, patrons, are generally out there for a much longer time and will need/want on-site food to get them through the day.
  18. Friday's NYM game: 12 Runs, 12 Hits, 16 BBs, 18 K, with 11 pitchers used throwing a combined 338 pitches Friday's Yanx/O's game: 13 Runs, 19 Hits, 11 BBs, 19 K, with 11 pitchers throwing 318 pitches Time of Game: 3:01 & 3:04 Is there any doubt that, even with the home team winning both so only 8-1/2 innings, the T.O.G. of those two played in recent years starts with a 4 ?
  19. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=121725 time=1680920425 user_id=68] The team should change its name to the New York Presbyterians.
  20. =G-Fafif post_id=121717 time=1680901112 user_id=55] Time of game -- 3:01. Horrors!
  21. A Boy Named Seo wrote: But why can't it be a rectangle that just borders the stupid logo and not that huge square. No doubt because a maximum size limit was put on these things (y'know, to keep them from looking gaudy and ugly) but, as often happens in these deals, 'maximum' gets translated into 'minimum' so extra vertical space is needed to fill out the very horizontal looking logo.
  22. Braves scored twice on three straight two-out hits in the 8th to tie the Padres 6-6 They then notched two straight hits after two were out w/none on in the 9th for a walk-off win in their home opener. They're 6-1 now and I'm predicting them to win like 140 games this year.
  23. Well, the early results are certainly encouraging. On the other hand it's more than a bit discouraging in that, for decades, they ignored an ongoing and growing problem that was so easily fixable.
  24. You knew this was coming at some point, didn't you? Obviously it's too early to draw any long term conclusions as far as to where the average game time will wind up by the end of the year so we'll have a chance to follow along as it goes. But the early results with the new rules have been far larger than anything I expected. So rather than just rely on average game time, I'll give you this comparison between the first week of games this year compared to 2017 when I nerdily kept some stats for the entire season. - In 2017 there were 19 games that finished in 2:20 or under; that's 19 out of 2,245 (9 inning) total games played - So far in 2023, just eight days into the season, there have already been 17 (of 87). So that's 0.8% vs 19.5% By the end of today's games, even with all the rain outs, this year will likely surpass the 2017 total. Move to 2:30 or under and it's 95 games for the entire 2017 season (4.2%) vs 32 (36.8%) to date this year.
