I would have guessed 13 also, and it turns out that is correct. When dealing with a Venezualan infielder, 13 is always a strong guess.

Judge HR'd again tonight (just once) but it wasn't enough as the Yanx lost to Washington Now 61-66, they've got 35 games left and have to go 21-14 (.600 winning pct) in order to finish over .500 (82-80) or 20-15 to finish exactly .500 I hope not to bore you folks with everyday updates, but I'm going to be following closely.

This 'decision' was essentially decided a while ago but, like the Wright retirement, he couldn't say so with the contract still ongoing so he and the team seem to have reached some sort of agreement as to how the remainder of the contract gets payed out. A wild up and down career. Not even drafted out of HS, he shed his 'baby fat' and then not only got in good shape but had a career at SD State that not only made him the number 1/1 draft pick but one who was considered one of the best draft picks of the history of MLB's draft era. He then debuted with a splash (14 Ks in 7 innings), had some bumps along the road, had his best season and post-season as the Nats won their only WS, then signed a long-term deal coming out of that year and has essentially never pitched since. Of all the guys the Nats let walk [scherzer, Turner, Rendon, Schwarber, etc.] he was the one they kept and they took a total burn on it.

I don't want a set of rigid rules governing number retirement. But I'd like there to be some sort of guidelines and mine would look something like this: 1) a career NYM or at least a solid majority of his career as one 2) HoF inductee or at least pretty darn close to it 3) Was a member/citizen of good standing while a NYM - Keith falls short on #1 & #2, although I understand this is as much about his announcing career as his playing one - Cater checks off #2 though isn't close on #1 - Gooden and Strawberry are barely there on #1, not close on #2, and iffy as hell on #3 - Piazza checks #2 and is at least close on #1. I wouldn't have tabbed him, though I'm not going to go nuts on it. - Mays obviously has #2 covered tho isn't close on #1, although I understand there are extenuating circumstances (promises) here. - Koosman: #1 yes, #2 not close. - Wright: #1 yes, #2 no. Probably gets the sympathy vote. - Reyes - #1 yes, #2 not close - Mookie, HoJo, Krane, Beltran, Cleon, etc.: Please stop. Strawberry has the club HR record and Doc second only to Seaver in wins , so there is that Indeed; I don't understand the hate. Yes they screwed up but haven't we all? Saying that someone falls short of the ultimate team honor isn't "hate". These guys are already in the NYM HoF. That should be considered a terrific honor but, by expanding the retired number roster, not only is the team (read: Cohen) degrading the status of number retirement but he's also treating the HoF status as if it's almost a meaningless gesture.

I'm sure it's a great experience for the kids and for family and locals in those towns striving for, and maybe even getting to, Williamsburg. Less thrilled with the amount of TV which has gone from title game only years back to now saturation coverage designed mostly to provide ESPN programming hours which they use to give their on-air talent a last vacation before their full-on football blitz gets under way. It's treated as innocent fun but I question the benefit of showing the failures, which inevitably come with the successes, of children on national TV while also ranking them with radar gun readings and other such stuff. The fewer adults that get involved the kids' sports the better IMO and the LLWS now has a whole lotta adults involved for reasons that go beyond children's games. So while I hope everyone involved has a blast, I don't watch and have no intention of starting.

Yanx are also in the midst of a 60-some long innings streak without holding a lead at any point. They last led 2-1 early in a game nine days ago vs the Braves, one they'd go on to lose 11-3 But streaks are quirky and both of those will end, probably soon. What I really want out of this season for them is last place and at a sub-.500 record. Right now they're 5-under and sinking fast. But their schedule for the remainder of the season isn't very daunting so it's quite possible they'll resurface above the break even point before the regular season is wrapped up.
