  1. So now we know The Plan!!!!: Sign as many vowels as possible.
  2. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Interesting in that it moves McJeff to 2B, for now anyway And maybe Nimmo to LF
  3. Had a couple decent seasons for the Cards in '20 & '21. Maybe he sukked for the Yanquis because they made him cut off most of his blond curls and he'll improve now that he's removed from 1960's prep school rules. Def a defensive and speed upgrade. Will turn 30 mid-season.
  4. I had a nice rarity score thing going until guessing that Steve Bedrosian was an Atlanta AS He was once, but with Philly. I try to do these things too quickly. It's easier than thinking.
  5. The Hot Corner wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Picture Jacob deGrom, except with a devastating hook, finishing his own games. Gooden not only finished his games, just as importantly, he could be counted on to make his scheduled starts (year after year). Until he no longer could.
  6. It's always tough to tell with Braves players because they don't spend a lot of time in the minors which is when the ratings get done. Their guys usually jump from Jr HS straight to the majors.
  7. Sale turns 35 during ST and has made 31 starts over the last three seasons combined. Now 20 of those starts were last season so maybe he's getting things back together after all the injuries. I suspect he'll be the guy who'll be tough on a given night but also leave games early a lot; feast or famine kind of thing. Vaughn Grissom was making an early splash right around the time Michael Harris was (in 2022) but then got injured and hasn't seen much ML time since. Be interesting to see what the Sox do with him. The consensus seems to be that he's Not a ML SS, not a regular one anyway. That small LF in Fenway might be a good landing spot. Then all he needs to do is prove he can hit.
  8. We're I on X I'd just respond: FAH Q too! It's one of the reasons why I'm not on X. One of many.
  9. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I think he's praising former Monkee Peter Noone. Noone was a Herman's Hermit, not a Monkee. But you're in the right genre and era so we're giving you partial credit.
  10. - Opens grid - looks at it for 30 seconds - comes up with Ken Griffey Jr. plus eight blanks - closes grid
  11. And we care what this person says because ... ?
  12. I don't remember the source, but it was likely reprinted and/or linked here.
  13. In a story written about the group of teammates going out to see Seaver for the final time, Swoboda was quoted as saying how great it was just to chat with the guys during the drive to Tom's vineyard/home, 'except for when Koosman starts in with all that right wing stuff' (or words to that effect).
  14. He had a lot of vowels.
  15. So it turns out that Ron Guidry only had 1,778 career Ks
  16. Rarity = 51 Larry Walker, Tommy Herr, Enos Slaughter Joe Torre, Howard Johnson, Bernard Gilkey Tom Seaver, Billy Hamilton, Ted Kluszewski Billy Hamilton turned out to be the most answered for CIN 30+ steals (25%) so that limited my Rarity score Seaver and HoJo at 8% were next highest
  17. The call to end the Ripken streak was always going to be Cal's. But apparently that didn't occur to Minor because when he arrived at the park and was told that he was going to be that night's starting 3Bman his initial reaction was "Does Cal know that?" Other Minor tidbits: - his name should have been Major cuz he was Yuge: 6' 7" / 225 - he was drafted in the 1st round by the Philly 76ers and played briefly with them in a training camp - he had an identical twin: Damon - he played just parts of four ML seasons [1998-2001] as did Damon [sFG 2000-2003, 2004] - both twins were drafted by the Mets though neither one signed
  18. Houser, 30 y/o (31 in February) has had a better than average ERA in three of the last five seasons [2019, '21, '23] and below average in the other two ['20 and '22] His K/9 are low [7.3] but so are his HR/9 [0.9] and he's got a career average ERA+ over 100 [106] That's not failed fifth starter material.
  19. Not that it was originally set up as a contest. But when he came off better than the others I think that put the idea into the heads of station mgmt that they could move Somers to a better time slot and have his (cheap) replacement already to go. Benigno was OK and mainly appealed to those fans who were like him: very passionate and totally irrational. One of my favorite sayings of his was that the Jets, Knicks, and Rangers never had calls go their way. Not just in the course of a particular game mind you but as a rule and over the years, the majority of calls consistently went against those teams (all the ones he rooted for just coincidentally). That kind of thinking is the mentality of irrational sports fans ("the league and the TV networks don't want us to win!!!!"). It's a kind of logic that's also common among six year-olds, and Donald Trump as well.
  20. I got too cute trying to go rare and blew the ninth guess. Up until that fatal choice i had a nice streak going with everyone at 3% or under. WAS: Warren Cromarte, Jayson Werth, Rusty Staub MIL: John Jaha, Tommy Harper*, Steve Hovley* ATL: Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Joe Adcock Adcock was a 1B so I took a shot. Turns he played RF but only prior to becoming a Brave. My alternate choice was C Del Crandell, that guess would have been correct. The Milwaukee line was 0.4%, 0.3%, and 0.2% * Seattle Pilots
  21. I feel like this trade is just the Mets pulling the wool over my eyes. SC = High
  22. It was more like Benigno got his job at FAN by winning a contest, and it all started with the infamous 'Eli from Westchester'. Eli was an ex-college football player (somewhere in the midwest) and also black which by itself seemed unusual among most FAN listeners/callers in those days. The theme in his calls was always the same, that all the NYC sports teams were racist and he rode that theme into becoming what I guess could be called the station's first 'celebrity' caller. Some hosts eventually banned him from their shows because they knew they'd get the same take over and over again often without supporting evidence (not always right but never in doubt). Others embraced him knowing that a call from him essentially programmed the rest of their show as the next several hours would be filled with other callers pushing back at Eli's rant du jour. Fast forward a couple years to right around this time of year when regular hosts' vacations and broken schedules left the station with a few hours here and there to fill and so they announced that Eli would be given the opportunity to fill in one or two of those short shifts. This quickly caused a backlash with callers wondering why being an overt racist got you increased time on air rather than less. FAN then took a quick back step by 'clarifying' that, ummm, what we really meant was that we were going to give these mini time-slots to several of our better known callers .. yeah, that was our plan all along. One of those callers was 'Joe from Saddle River', a restaurant seafood salesman who'd call often, mostly about the Jets. Turned out that, given the chance to solo, Eli turned into a very tame version of his usual self (perhaps under orders) and the consensus was that he pretty much bombed while the one who supposedly came off the best among the half-dozen or so fill-ins was Benigno. By this point Steve Somers was itching to leave the overnight slot where he had toiled for years for some normal working hours so Benigno, who I believe had a small bit of radio experience in his younger days, was offered the overnight shift if he took some courses to re-up his skills.
  23. =MFS62 post_id=143255 time=1703007896 user_id=60] He started out as a fan frequently calling the station late at night. The host (Steve Sommers?) and the producers liked him and (jokingly) suggested he get some training and apply for a job. He did. He went to the Columbia School of Broadcasting (which sounded like a scam) and applied for a job and got it.
  24. =MFS62 post_id=143250 time=1703006050 user_id=60] Joe leads with his heart instead of his head.
