  1. I miss his kind of ballplayer, and by that I mean that he was one tough SOB ... which is basically what his friends called him. Just the simple act of rolling the ball back to the mound following the 3rd out of the half-inning to the opposite side of the opposing pitcher's dugout just so he'd have to walk an extra couple of strides in order to pick it up -- and, yes kids, there once was a time when baseballs continued to be used even if they briefly touched the ground -- was the perfect way to silently say that he didn't show up to the park that day in order to make friends.
  2. Lowered mine a bit by first thinking of Frank Robinson for BAL/CIN but then remembering the guy he was traded for, Milt Pappas
  3. But does any of this actually matter? Yesterday the Braves, with Spencer Strider blowing up, were down 3-0 then later 5-2 , but eventually won 6-5 Tonight they were down 8-0 and 8-5 but are now up 9-8 (because, of course they are) as ARZ tries to pull one out. And the Braves win for the second game in a row despite getting shitty starting pitching for the second night. THIS is the biggest difference in the two teams.
  4. Wonder if we'll ever get any of the details of that ugly breakup? From a retirement day at the park all planned until a sudden cancelation leads to it all eventually winding up two years later as the equivalent of an agate type announcement on the your local paper's legal notices page.
  5. Max Fried facing 11 batters in the top of the 1st tonight vs the DBacks while yielding 6 ER on 7 Hits plus a BB probably wasn't what the Braves wanted to see on the heels of Spencer Strider being diagnosed with an elbow ligament tear* after he left yesterday's game after just 4 IP [5 ER, 7 H, 3 BB] * maybe Not requiring TJS but that remains to be seen
  6. The NYM pitching staff has, or at least Had prior to today, the best ERA in baseball. But there's a caveat to all that (I mean even beyond the one where the offense can't score) and it's that more than 1/4 of the runs allowed this season to date [9 of 33] aren't counted in the ERA because they were logged in as unearned. And those don't even count things like the fly ball not caught in LF today (runner eventually scored) or the K/WP (set-up more runs), or the allowing of a run via a double-steal not played properly, and so on. Also some less than good throws from the OF. Anyway, the bottom line is that this has not been a great start for a team that supposedly focused on improving their defense this past winter.

  8. =metirish post_id=150968 time=1712441529 user_id=72] Why would anyone want to pay to have a Starr patch ?
  9. And now it's the Yanquis starting a Saturday game in April at night. They were the one club most bucking the trend over the last few decades and held onto their 1PM starts almost exclusively throughout the whole season unless it was a network game in which they had no say over first pitch time. But here they are tonight, at home, with a 7:05 game time on just their second home game of the year and the first Saturday in April. I haven't checked the rest of their sked but I wonder what prompted this sudden course reversal.
  10. That's on McNeil It you're going for the out you've got to be SURE of it and, if not, cut it and go home.
  11. Doesn't matter now, but I thought Nimmo could have had a triple.
  12. Huh, turns out that two runs ISN'T an insurmountable deficit.
  13. 27 for me. That 11% on Maddux [GG/HoF] accounted for more than 40% of that, particularly frustrating as ir was my final guess. I thought I was being clever by putting a pitcher there. Not as clever as I thought as it turns out.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: Severino is certainly getting it done a lot better than his first time out. It's not just that that run should be charged to him. A lot of question marks with him. But our defense put this together. So far kind of similar to his first outing IMO: plays not being made behind him (one error, one not); one play almost made (Pete); not a ton of stuff hit hard but nothing really at anyone ... all of which put him on edge and needing to be near perfect (see his frustrated reaction to a borderline non-strike-three call) in order to not get scored upon.
  15. The 0-5 Mets of 2006 went on to win the next six straight. Just sayin'
  16. Both had some good years followed by a big fall. Teheran's older so he's had more of both. And while Severino obviously wasn't good in start #1 I thought he was also a bit unlucky: several plays Not made (one changed to an error days later) plus a bunch of hits that were finding more holes than gloves. Don't really know what to expect from either at this point.
  17. =Fman99 post_id=150747 time=1712316103 user_id=86] I'm still trying to figure out how Pete could reach that far for a ball and still be able to muscle it over the fence. That looked like, at best, a bloop single when it left the bat. What a monster he is.
  18. =whippoorwill post_id=150771 time=1712329079 user_id=79] =Fman99 post_id=150764 time=1712325447 user_id=86] Man, fuck the Apple TV games. I have a gig anyway but this means it won't be on any of the screens at the brew pub while I'm playing. I was hoping to multi task
  19. Just NOW!!!! finished watching the back-2-back games via delay. So at least now I can go to bed less pissed off and discouraged than I expected to. Not that I'm happy, just less pissed off.
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I have the game on now. This is the first game I'm watching live this season! I've watched one live and won't add to that toal until at least Saturday (day games today and Apple+ on Friday)
  21. 11th inning in Phoenix. Each team scored twice in the 10th, Yanx scored twice again in the 11th In bottom 11 the Snakes plate one but because they had to put their DH in the game an inning earlier due to an injury, had the pitcher's spot coming up in the lineup. So the Yanx IW'd the guy in front of him despite it being runners on 1st and 2nd so loaded the bases but got a reliever swinging the bat. Predictably, he K'd (and on a lousy call too - 3 inches outside at least). Yanx win ... Yanx win!
  22. =MFS62 post_id=150217 time=1711897028 user_id=60] He'll appear in fewer games than his brother.
  23. Edgy MD wrote: It's goofy, in that April rainouts used to be no big whoop. Not only was the schedule more tilted toward division play, but teams tended to open the season against division rivals, so if a game couldn't be played in April, you knew that opponent would be coming through town for a couple more series later in the year. Braves @ ChiSox rained out today, re-sked for a mutual off-day on June 27 when the Braves will play consecutive games in StL (Wed) CHI (Thu) and ATL (Fri) Meanwhile they're still waiting out weather in the scheduled 1:00 start in Baltimore and the 4:00 in Philly Neither has started but neither has either been postponed.
