  1. This isn't a new or fresh rant from Gossage (who I would have put in before Sutter btw). He's been doing this for years now and will repeat the above act at any time of the year. I might be the exact same way under the same circumstances for all I know ... but it still sounds a bit crass.
  2. "If Jim Rice had played in the Metrodome, he would have torn the place down, and that's nothing against Kirby Puckett, that's just the way it is," Gossage said. As opposed to that pitching palace he played in instead? Look I could make a good argument for Rice, but one of the things holding him out according to some -- in addition to his mediocre OBP, surly personality, and lousy fielding that is -- is his huge home/road splits. His stats would have been considerably worse playing almost anywhere else. And I could really do without the; 'everything was so much harder and tougher when I played' whine-a-thon. That sounds stupid from every generation that repeats it.
  3. Well of course the ineligible list was concocted for the sole purpose of making sure there was no possiblity that Rose would get in; it was akin to a prison being built for just one man. Some of the writers at the time objected to it -- even some that agreed he should be kept out. They didn't like the fact (dove-tailing somewhat with the above piece) that they had been the keepers of the flame all this time and now were suddenly being told that the HoF & MLB didn't trust their morals enough to even give them the opportunity to pass judgement on Rose. Some wanted him on the ballot for exactly the option you gave; to vote NO. I personally agree with the ban but at the same time probably think there were enough of those types to where Rose would NOT have made it even had he been eligible all this time.
  4. That Ring was exposed to the Rule 5 draft means he was removed at some point.
  5. Baseball Prospectus took Bobby Valentine up on his challenge, and have been "playing" a Diamond Mind series between the ChiSox and Bobby's Chiba Lotte Marines in order to determine the real "World" Series champion. They first explained the parameters of the challenge and then dove right into the games. Chiba Lotte drew first blood by thumping the Pale Hose in Game 1 But Japanese import Tad Iguchi turned the tables on his former countrymen in dramatic fashion to steal Game 2 Game 3 saw the Series shift to Japan and also saw the Sox overcome an early defecit to take a 2-1 Series lead A huge 3rd inning turned Game 4 into a walkover for Chicago And the South-Siders finished it out and sent the home fans away disappointed in Game 5
  6. Charlotte is the Chi Sox top affliliate
  7. "If we all work together we can pull this here fence in a few feet and I bet those stupid pitchers won't ever notice"
  8. Sutter Sails Solo!!!!
  9. That was Lenny Harris (although maybe BV said so too). Lenny kind of "adopted" Butch even before they were (briefly) teammates and when someone asked him why he said something along the lines of; 'I thought his freckles were cute'
  10. Heilman was imagined to be closer to the majors than most simply on account of being a College Senior in the midst of a bunch of Juniors and HS kids, although I don't recall many claims that he'd be a #2 or #3 starter as early as the middle of the following year. Mark Prior pulled off that kind of timetable (briefly anyway) but he was considered one of the best college pitchers in years. Heilman afterall was an 18th overall pick, not 2nd (Prior) or 9th (Pelfrey) - both of whom might have been higher if not for money concerns.
  11. I was at that Zakk Wilde game where he got to do the anthem before the game. It's a good thing he's buddies w/Piazza because the rendition was pretty awful. You could see MP laughing from the stands.
  12. I don't know, but the fact that they initially thought it was something else meant that they were either making it worse or just not treating it at all at the beginning. At one point I remember they gave him something for "the symptoms" that made him practically fall asleep on the bench because they thought he was just over-excited. Butch Wynegar was the one guy I remember who actually did have some kind of disorder but I'm not sure if the details of that one ever came out. He just basically retired off of it.
  13. Eisenreich's the guy you're thinking of. He actually had Tourette's syndrome, but initially it was mis-diasgnosed as something else so the medication he was given actually made the condition worse and so it seemed like an anxiety disorder. He did have a long career but I think you'll find a gap or two in it. At one point he had left the game and was back playing pick-up and beer league games at home in Minnesota. Once the proper diagnosis was made he made his way back into baseball.
  14. The Triple Alliance of Sanity, Logic, and Reason..
  15. Poor Alex, a man without two countries.
  16. And here I was opening this up expecting to read about how our boy had hooked up with Keira Knightly.
  17. I suppose we'll have to first decide whether to define Soler as 'an expensive foreign free agent' or 'a young up-and-comer' before we know whether he's being forced onto the roster despite a lack of track record, or being kept down by the man.
  18. "Years ago, I went through a faze" I like this word. If you go through a phase when you're involved in a fad, it should be described as a Faze. I'd call the folks at SCRABBLE except that it's already a word under a different definition than my/KC's new one.
  19. As what, a starter? ... I doubt it. Short-term: he's probably a more likely candidate for a pen guy but even then it might not happen right out of camp. Remember this is a guy who hasn't pitched competetively in over a year and a half. Word is that those who have seen him like "his stuff" but it's all been during instructional leagues in the DR since his defection and visa nightmares. Long-term: Assuming things go well ... either he or Heilman gets designated as the 6th starter/injury fill-in this year, with one or both "graduating" to the rotation as Glavine, Trax, etc need replacing by '07.
  20. Leiter inks a minor league deal w/the Yanx. "I'm not dead yet!"
  21. Probably that various rumors have it that Theo is still be contacted in some sort of vague "consulting" role. Whether he was involved in recent the signing of JT Snow to a Maj League deal (and thereby crushing the hopes of their minor leaguers everywhere) is unknown at this time.
  22. Agents weren't used for the simple reason that owners/GMs could and would refuse to talk to them. The teams had all the power and the player had no recourse to force them to deal with a representative. So, except for unusual cases like Koufax/Drysdale -- who held out in tandem in an attempt to force the issue -- it wasn't until the FA era, when teams suddenly had to deal with players who had other options, that the use of an agent became a staple.
  23. Is Bret turning into stalker?
  24. Keep in mind also that KC's 'jumping off point' for this was the rantings of Joe Benigno who's one of those to decide long ago that Peterson is the man behind the curtain and is therefore to blame for everything bad (none of the good stuff falls on him of course) regardless of whether facts even hint that he's involved.
  25. 'Hillbilly' & 'Heep' - both on page 2 - make cases for liking the deal.
