  1. Bannister's no longer on the DL.
  2. Eli Marrero was DFA'd following Tuesday's game in order to make room for Ricky Ledee
  3. Trachsel - 2.8 Beltran - 2.5 Wright - 2.5 Wagner - 1.0 Oliver - 1.0 RHernandez - 0.1 Feliciano - 0.1
  4. Yeah, but then what did they do after the tying HR? - they get the winning run on still with no outs - then they fuck up a sac bunt with Piersynski (got the force at 2nd) - then the pinch-runner gets himself thrown out stealing by at least 9 feet (I think it's the 3rd CS of the night) Remind my team never to hire Ozzie
  5. Ozzie's ChiSox are doing the same thing that they did last time they played the MFYs; they seem to be in a contest to see how many outs they can make on the bases. C-M Wang couldn't get anyone out early on but got away with it for the most part cuz the Sox hit into DPs w/the bases loaded, got caught stealing several times, got thrown out trying to advance, etc. It's 4-4 in the 8th but geez the Sox should have more.
  6. Seaver's 19K game (including the final 10 in-a-row) came against the Pads
  7. BA: Carlos Gomez of, Mets (Double-A Binghamton): Prior to this season, Gomez was known more for his raw tools than his production on the field. Since returning in June from a back injury that sidelined him for a few weeks, he has been doing his best to reverse his rep. The 20-year-old is hitting .363 in that span and hit .406 in July and is hitting .435 in August. It is still mostly singles and he still strikes out too much, but it is still progress. This is the guy they skipped from Hagerstown directly to Bingo earlier this year.
  8. BA: As the season goes on, it becomes harder to believe that (RHP) Deolis Guerra was born in 1989. After an 11-strikeout gem Sunday night, Guerra has allowed just two earned runs over his last three starts. Since June 1, he has a 2.06 ERA in 66 innings with a 51-19 strikeout-walk ratio.
  9. Bayliss is typical of the football writer who - because he's been cast as an all-purpose talking-head on TV - is forced (usually reluctantly) into commenting on baseball issues and frequently embarrasses himself when he does.
  10. This column would have been more relevant (not to mention gutsy, timely &, oh I dunno ... INTERESTING) had it been written at some point over the last 4 years. That the deal Rodriguez got from Texas was going to be a drain on whatever team gave it to him and be a huge roadblock for future moves has been true - and obvious - since about 20 minutes after he signed it. Putting this out now is just jumping on two current trends; the always popular Monday Morning Quarterbacking, plus the suddenly popular ARod bashing.
  11. 1) Isn't it Talledega [u:128d38yw]Nights[/u:128d38yw]? 2) I've seen/heard a few decent reviews for it - although, personally, I'm not sure that the fans in NASCAR nation own enough weapons to make me go.
  12. All teams have now reached (or passed) the 108 game mark (2/3 of the season). Shown here are the teams' records at the 108 game mark, plus how many wins they racked up in the first 54 games compared to the 2nd 54. 13. ]... the deadline for finalizing the roster comes after the regular season has ended. Maybe 24 hours before Game 1 starts? Or the morning of the day before, perhaps? Right, the playoff roster isn't final until the final 24 hours before the series starts. It's just that the crew who are eligible to be active on that roster is restricted as of Aug 31. I think they've also tightened up a few of the loopier loopholes that existed a few years back. Steve Phillips used to put some non-descript, already-injured, single-A player on the 40-man just so he could then "replace" that guy on the playoff roster with a late addition. I don't think GMs can get away with as much of that sort of stuff as they used to. ]But the Mets could sign Sierra to a minor league deal (and put him on the 40-man) prior to 9/1 and get him on the postseason roster, right? As far as I know, as long as they had an injured player who he'd be replacing, yes.
  14. ]So the Mets could sign Sierra on September 1, and then put him on the playoff roster as a replacement for Sanchez. No, because Sierra would not have been in the NYM organization on Aug 31st. That injury loophole allows a player who was non-active (but in your system) to substitute for an injured player on the post-season roster. Victor Diaz, for instance, could sub in for Sanchez even if brought up after Sept 1.
  15. Baseball Prospectus discusses prospects: Fernando Martinez, OF Martinez was the prize in last year's international signing period as the Mets won a bidding war to ink the toolsy Dominican for $1.4 million. In his brief pro career, Martinez has proven to be much, much more than just a raw package of athleticism; he has shown himself to be a very good baseball player as well. After missing nearly a month with a strained knee, Martinez hit .361 in 14 games for Low Class A Hagerstown to raise his averages to .333/.389/.505, earning a promotion to the Florida State League, an assignment nearly unheard of for a 17-year-old. He went 3-for-13 over the weekend in his first three games for St. Lucie, and led off Sunday's game with a home run. Although his reviews as a defender in center field are poor, his offensive accomplishments at his age move him into elite status.
  16. LoDuca does a regular weekly call-in appearance on WFAN (I think it's on Tuesdays) on Joe Badabingo's show. It would be surprising if the spurned wife suddenly joined him on this week's gig.
  17. Maine - 4.1 Reyes - 3.0 LoDuca - 0.8 Wright - 1.0 Valentin - 1.1
  18. Between innings I've been watching channel 13. At first they were showing a concert presentation of 'South Pacific'. Now they're running the famous 'Liza with a Z' concert. Does this mean I've taken over from Edgy as the board's gay icon?
  19. ]but six years at less than ten per is probably gonna be a bargain for the Mets in the long run. No? Except that, on his own, Wright was prolly not going to make more than 500K next year so you gotta look at this stuff as an average. He's getting more now in exchange for the security he's not yet in position to demand and possibly less later on because he's giving up the right to auction himself for 2 more (or possibly 3) years. It could be a bargain for the team in the back years (assuming normal progression) plus they know exactly what the budgeted numbers are for their two young guns for the foreseeable future.
  20. ]Mets extend Wright... Why, they didn't think he was tall enough?? I'm a bit surprised at the timing and size of the deal, but certainly not unhappy. ]I'm really starting to like how this organization does things. Except for the Nady trade. The one that got him here or the one that sent him away? Or both?
  21. We want the *Genesee Cream Ale!!! * aka; Genee SCREAMers, aka; Green Death (anyone who is from, or went to school in, upstate NY knows what I'm talkin' about)
  22. OHernandez - 2.3 Reyes - 1.5 Beltran - 1.2 LoDuca - 1.0
  23. Glavine - 3.2 Wright - 1.7 Heilman - 1.0 Wagner - 0.5 Reyes - 0.5 Delgado - 0.7 Milledge - 0.9 Chavez - 1.5
  24. This just in: Ken Rosenthal is short. Film at 11
  25. IIRC, that's the 2nd time Wright's glove has bailed Wagner's ass out after costing him one early in the season. Wright's glove is now ahead 2-1
