  1. ]Official: $51.5 million. Great googily moogily!! Ya hafta figger that these clubs have a decent idea that they can make part of that back with increased revenue opportunities in the far east. I'm not sure what those would be since the momey from the most obvious ones; foreign TV plus merchandising, are split among all the teams. Plus it's not like the Sox can increase attendance at Fenway from a sudden influx of Japanese tourists or locals since they're sold out through about the year 2525 (if man is still alive) at this point. I've heard a ton of hair-brained speculation on how much money the Sox can make (or that the Yanx did make from Hidecki) from getting a foothold in the Orient but very few of those actual fact thingies.
  2. ]Is that from memory, Knot, or were you able to look it up somewhere? I'm no better than 50/50 to remember what I had for lunch. Baseball-Reference.com has the voting results for each of the major awards. I just clicked on each year until I saw a Met.
  3. The other problem with wanting Reyes to bunt more ... is that he's not really very good at it. He'll beat out the occasional one on pure speed alone, but it's a bad pct move unless he improves on it in the future. It is something he should work on IMO just to have as another weapon if nothing else. Bring in those infielders an extra step and grab a handful of extra hits by smacking it by them. But lacing pitches into the gap and running forever is still better.
  4. There's still 7 weeks left in the year. I was just starting my final push for the award and they go and prematurely end the contest. What a gyp!
  5. Leiter finished 6th getting 3 points (3 3rd place votes) in 1998 for his 17-6, 2.47 ERA, 1.15 WHiP, 176 K season The winner that season ... Tom Glavine

  7. There are ATMs at Shea - and shirley there will be plenty at 'Citi' I recall CitiBank maybe not having the first ATMs but that they were the ones whose ATMs didn't initially work in conjunction with anyone else's. A card that worked w/their machines didn't work anywhere else and vers vica. I know some bank was tweaked that way early on in the ATM-era and I think it was them.
  8. Edgy DC wrote: "And that's the 14th CitiBlastTM of the year by Carlos Delgado!" Although lets not pretend that stuff like that is anything new. Commercialism is often considered crass in its day yet somehow becomes 'charming' over time. 'White Owl Wallops', 'Ballantine Blasts', and 'Hit Sign Win Suit' ads are frequently recalled fondly by NYC baseball fans of a particular age.
  9. metirish wrote: We even have A-Rod bashing in the first article.... And, per usual, it's a gratuitous and unneccesary reference. I guess this guy's a non-sports writer who figures that using the ARod analogy makes him sound like what he thinks a regular jock writer is supposed to sound like. The NYTimes should be above that.
  10. "... the Mets are becoming the first major team in New York in the big four sports (baseball, basketball, football, hockey) to name its home after a marketer." At least they are if we choose to ignore the Devils/Nets home of 'Continental Airlines Arena' for purposes of having the facts fit the pre-determined theory.
  11. Hot dogs, green grass all out at [u:52998511fe]Citi[/u:52998511fe] guaranteed to ...
  12. Lee's defense is just plain awful, both from what I've seen and also heard. Texas was upset at how out of shape he was after landing there in mid-season (where did I read just recently about his scale tipping at about 270 ?!?). This guy isn't a DH in the making, he's a DH NOW!!!!! and that's a problem when the only way you'll likely get him is to commit for several years (like til he's 34 or 35).
  13. ]So much for the notion that he and LaRussa couldn't stand each other It was he and Rolen who had problems towards the end of the season. Don't remember anything with TLR & Edmonds. Also (it was brought up in another thread); Aramis Ramirez & Kerry wood re-up w/the Cubbies. Ramirez long-term, Wood for one year.
  14. HahnSolo wrote: How many voters? B/c it looks like Ramirez was named on 27 ballots, Zimmerman on 29, and Uggla on 25. 2 writers per city that has a team; so 32 in the NL, 28 in the AL Each voter lists his 1st, 2nd & 3rd choice and points are awarded on a 5-3-1 basis
  15. ]I was thinking his time on the 2005 roster may have disqualified him apart from his at-bat total No, because remember he didn't come up until late August. He got all his ABs as a pretty much full-time player. Very little sitting on the bench once he got his foot in the door.
  16. No, only 100 ABs in '05 so he was still eligible. Just didn't make anyone's top 3. Bad 2nd half doomed any shot he had.
  17. Tiger pitcher Justin Verlander (picked one slot ahead of Philip Humber in the amateur draft) wins the AL award in a romp. 1st Place2nd Place3rd PlaceTotal Verlander(Det)2610133Papelbon(Bos)020363Liriano(Minn)131630Jojima(Sea)02410Weaver(LAA)0228Markakis(Balt)1027Kinsler(Tex)0011
  18. Florida SS Hanley Ramirez (the main bait in the Josh Becket to Boston deal) wins the NL Rookie of the Year award by a narrow margin over National's 3B Ryan Zimmerman. 6 Marlins got at least 1 3rd place vote. 1st Place2nd Place3rd PlaceTotal Ramirez(Fla)14112105Zimmerman(Was)10163101Uggla(Fla)631655J. 19. Having the defending champ be the one to open the season on the Sunday night game seems to be an emerging "tradition" with MLB. It's as good a reason as any to decide who gets that first game.
  20. That's kinda where I'm at too. I've never seen 'Ali G' so I really have no pre-conceived attitude towards this character, but the whole idea of a fish out of water type creating these embarrassing situations that are funny because he/they are so clueless just doesn't appeal to me.
  21. "... any other players wielding shovels other than Reyes and Wright? Or are they the only ones not recuperating from offseason surgery" No, but they were the only two with 'FACE OF FRANCHISE' stamped on their foreheads during an out-patient process that took place quietly last week. Both were slipped some extra under-the-table money in addition to their recent contracts in exchange for agreeing to the 'F-o-F' tatoo and to represent the players in all photo-ops for the next decade or two.
  22. btw, the simulated signage on the simulated stadium that's being shown for today's 'groundbreaking' shows it as; Citi Field (two words) not CitiField
  23. Good move - at worst he becomes a highly paid bench player. Of course they could still use a good (preferably RH) super-sub to go with him.
  24. Not lately
  25. Yanx seem to be trying to emulate the Omar strategy of deep bullpens. That's a starting OFer plus a (sometime) starting pitcher for 2 pen guys plus maybe two more future ones. For years they've gone with a sort of two-tiered pen, usually consisting of two or three real good guys up front (or at least real expensive and supposed to be good) that get leaned on heavily in close games, followed by a bunch of sacraficial lambs at the back end to only be used during blowouts.
