  1. It also saves the WS from having to compete with the networks' Thursday night ratings juggernaut shows ... and don't think THAT didn't enter the equation along the way.
  2. No I think they are changing the whole timing including ending the season on a different day (other than Sunday) and then each of the playoff rounds but I'm not sure of the details.
  3. They decided to switch the WS starting date when they made the new TV deal a month or 3 back. Yeah the current format covers two weekends but that's part of the problem; Saturday night is the worst TV night of the week and that's where your opening and occasionally closing game would be under the present setup. Basically, they're trying to stem the ratings declines. TBS is doing one of the LCSs but not the other (alternating w/FOX) so there's no danger of the two running into each other on the same channel.
  4. "Best Award"
  5. The other thing about George Michael is that he was the guy who directly replaced 'Cousin Brucie' when Bruce left his run as the (6-10PM?) DJ on WABC-770 Radio - which was then the 800-lb gorilla in pop music radio.
  6. ]wasn't that the MO deal? Yes, we dealt Appier away to get Mo - and, as bad as Met fans complain about Vaughn, it was the Angels who wound up eating a much more expensive lunch on Appier. At least w/big Mo it was an injury that did him in and the insurance policy that was inherited from his Angels' contract paid off a majority of his final missed season.
  7. ]Am I missing something? Well nothing except that he kinda fits the Dickshot test of marginal full-timer morphing into a decent bench player. If all he's doing is replacing Woodward then I don't have any problem with this. Dude packs a little bit of pop and can play several positions. He did sign one of those big dot-com era contracts w/Detroit off of those 20+ HR seasons. Then, when the 20+ became 10-15 they dumped him with 2 years and about $12-13mil remaining, a record for owed money until the Angels sent Appier packing with nearly $20 due. I seem to remember him beating us with a late game hit while he was with Florida.

  9. ]it's called having fun talking about baseball when baseball is not being played I understand that, but there's also a big difference between random thoughts and the implication that it's an idea actively being considered.
  10. That doesn't even qualify as a rumor. It's a blogger repeating Olney's speculation that now might be a good time to deal Manny and then speculating on where he might go and what kind of package might get him there. That's not even a rumor of a rumor.
  11. I fnothing else, Aardsma will forever be the guy who knocked Hank Aaron out of the leadoff spot in the Baseball Encyclopedia
  12. Perhaps voices inside [u:c2d00d5e8a]someone's[/u:c2d00d5e8a] head would have been a better question. IOW, did someone who actually sniffs out this sort of stuff for a living report it or is its source more from the internet trolling, talk-show calling, fan end of things? Not that I believe for a second that it'll happen in either case, but at least if it's from a legit source I'll be forced to consider it as a remote option.
  13. Apparently Toronto has reason to doubt that the Texas native will want to remain in Canada when he becomes free to choose on his own a year from now ... which is why speculation centers on them dealing him now (or at mid-season) and why much of it centers on him winding up in either Dallas or Houston. And, yes, it would take a king's ransom to get him.
  14. Was drafted right behind Kazmir much to the delight of Billy Beane as it allowed him to take Nick Swisher.
  15. Does "new rumor" mean the same as "voices inside my head" ... or is there actually a grain of basis for that wild-assed speculation?
  16. I wouldn't want to give a horse a shave -- and I certainly wouldn't want to see it on replay.
  17. Always interesting when you see that 1st & 3rd place in the NL plus 3rd in the AL are all already out of their jobs.

  20. Oh of course he'd be a starter; the guy's a legit All-Star. What I mean is that I don't think we want to be adding [u:53f7a19da3]more[/u:53f7a19da3] OFers and subtracting [u:53f7a19da3]young[/u:53f7a19da3] pitching at this point.
  21. Hmmmm, not too sure what to make of all that. Ring seemed to be just getting to the point where they (Mets & the ChiSox before them) hoped he'd be when they traded/drafted him. He had a nice year last year but I guess the multitude of LHPs ahead of him was a problem. Bell seemed to be loved by the stat hounds but would alternate looking great & horrible. Adkins will turn 30 next summer. Johnson (25) seems to get a decent amount of XBHs to go w/a high number of Ks. Hope he left his steroids at home.
  22. The problem with Wells - and this assumes that Toronto is really ready to trade him - is that he's a true CFer and thus would be worth more to a team that needs one. He's also a FA after one year meaning that he'd be more likely to stick around on a team that needs a true CFer. We ain't that team. Interesting idea, but I'm afraid we'd have to overpay for him twice - once w/players to get him here and then once w/a FA contract to keep him all to have him play out of position. And do we really need an extra OFer at the expense of the young pitching it would almost certainly take to get him?
  23. ]One problem with that is that the infielders may not want to take a step in, and just concede the occasional bunt hit to Reyes. That's not a problem. Anytime someone wants to give Reyes 1st base is A-OK with me. My point is that imploring him to bunt more won't be an improvement unless and until he gets better at it.
  24. btw, I heard a few minutes from Orestes Destrada today (interview with M&MD on the radio). Destrada, a one-time NYY prospect and now an ESPN talkie - played for a number of years in Japan and knows their system well. Anyway he claims that Matsuzaka will not be a FA for another two years, in part due to the fact that things like injury or rehab time spent in their mainors does NOT count toward service time and therefore he'd still be short of full FA rights even if he plays next season in Japan. That gives him additional incentive to sign whatever the Sox are offering since he's due to make considerably less ($3-4 mil) in Japan.
  25. Except that the thinking is that Matsuzaka/Boras are going to want a much shorter contract - something on the order of 3-4 years complete with the 'must decline arb' clause which has become fashionable with established foreign players - so as to make him a true MLB FA by the time he hits age 29 or 30 since it's not like he'll be getting any of that $50mil (unless there's some under the table dealings going on). Nice deal for Daisuke if he can get it but much tougher for the Sox to amortize that $50mil nut.
