  3. The parties are en route to Boston with a 6-year deal in hand Looks like - for the most part - that the BoSox hold-the-ground strategy won out over Boras's bluster.

  5. He was at one time at least. Not sure what he's been up to lately. Meanwhile, we did sign Dave Williams to a 1-year deal.
  6. 10. ]"Retirement" doesn't exactly mean what it used to mean, does it?" Which isn't so much a bad thing. Used to be that when these guys drew only somewhat better pay than much of the working world - as opposed to 'set-for-life' money - there was a significant lure for aging players to latch onto something (frequently something sales/pr related) when the opportunity came up even if they possibly had a year or two left simply for the fear that the offer wouldn't be there a few years later when their names may have lost their luster of 'ballplayer' and had faded into 'say, didn't you used to be somebody?' Today, with so few outside jobs that will come close even to reduced end-of-career sports salaries, when someone merely talks about getting out when they want to rather than when they have to (Tiki, Pettitte) there are voices from both inside and outside the sport who are quick to call them quitters and/or question their sanity & motivations.
  11. ESPN sez: "The Texas Rangers have made a formal offer to left-hander Barry Zito, according to multiple media reports that cited club officials." No specifics were mentioned.
  12. Tough to resist that Bannister line huh? ... just 'bout wrote itself I bet.

  15. Well it's not like this was the only year in which this was done.Again, the idea was not just that the two players were tied but that there was a larger than normal gap between them and the player directly above or below them and so the points were adjusted (slightly) the reflect it; ie. Koosman & Agee were closer to Seaver than to Clendenon.I'll change them to the half-points in this case since it's not like it's making a huge difference. I'm just trying to make sure that we've got some kind of reliable (and findable) record of this stuff and that the data hasn't become screwed up over time for various reasons.
  16. Darren Oliver signs with Anaheim Had a nice year for us - especially for someone coming out of retirement. But he also worked mostly low-leverage innings and, at age 36, it's not the type of performance that would be a good bet to duplicate.
  17. Well it's not logical if that wasn't the original intent.Remember that some of that point-shifting stuff was done where it was thought sizable gaps existed.
  18. Is that how you actually had it, or is that a result of some sort of ex post facto tidying effort on your part, a la your belated attempt to steal a point for Kranepool?Problems are;a) the changes you mention leaves us a point short unless there's some other adjustment somewhereb) they don't seem to be correct. The wrap-up of the thread is as straight forward as it can be and, seeing as how it was my thread, I'm reasonably sure I didn't change it anywhere along the line. And not that a couple of half-point adjustments would change a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, but I am a bit concerned with these are coming from.
  19. So anything ever happen with that update/sequel - 32 Candles? - that was supposedly in the works -- or was that just a figment of someone's fantasy?
  20. Can't you just see him down there, peering through the fence at a field in his home country as all his buddies are playing while saying; 'my daddy says I'm not allowed to play'
  21. ]if he's suspended for 50 games, and we have a 2.5 mil contract, do the mets still have to pay that portion of the contract when he's suspended? The way the contract works out, it's for $2mil the first year then $3mil the 2nd - so I guess they figure that year 1 is discounted on account of the suspension. Presumably it would have been more like a $6mil deal w/o the 50-day ban. ]What happens to a pitcher who is suspended? He gets to participate in spring training right? Can he pitch in AAA while he is suspended? Or would he be exiled to St. Lucie? Spring Training? -- I believe yes. He can def be there, not sure about working in reg ST games. Regular Minor league games while under suspension? -- No. St Lucie? -- If you mean the instructional/extended ST in-camp thingie? -- Yes.
  22. I wonder if Boras was totally up front w/Matsuzaka about what he c/should expect from a contract on this side of the Pacific, or whether he sold him on the idea that a deal for north of $10mil/yr was a lock once the agent starting spinning his charm on whatever hapless GM won the bid. Be interesting to see if Dice-K really wants to avoid returning to Japan to the point where he either instructs Boas to take the best deal or fires his ass in favor of someone who'll be willing to make a deal.

  25. Yeah, Lary looks like he was wronged by not being there, but the bigger question involves how & when he and those other changes got onto your list. It doesn't look like F.L. was ever in the discussion and some of those other "changes" don't look remotely logical.
