  2. The Bernie situation has nothing to do with money. They didn't pay him much last year and would probably pay him even less this season. The Yanx just don't view him as the ideal off-the-bench player and would rather break in a younger/faster/newer guy who they could dump quickly and cleanly if he doesn't work out over trying to keep the aging one-time star happy and productive - particularly since dumping him in mid-stream if he sucked would be a monumental pr undertaking.
  3. I actually think this is as much Bernie's fault as the team's. He painted himself into a corner by essentially saying that he didn't want to play anywhere except the Bronx giving the Yanx no incentive to guarantee him anything, but yet he feels insulted by the non-roster invite and would rather stay home than compete for a job. They'd turn to him if, like you said, one of their reg OFers (or Melky) gets injured. Problem is, what you'd like in a 5th OFer: - a glove that can play all 3 OF positions; - a reliable PH-er/PR-er isn't really Bernie anymore What he'd be best at these days is a RH swinging DH (he doesn't swing LH very well anymore) but they see Giambi as a full-time DH and I don't think they want to even contemplate the thought of Bernie w/a 1st baseman's glove.
  4. Nate Silver over at Baseball Prospectus gives a big ol 'LOL' at the inclusion of Mr. Jeter on the GG ballot and finds that their measure of his 'Fielding Runs (saved) Above Average' [FRAA] leaves him just a bit outside of a few others in the Gold Glove era.

  6. Y Yttrium has a silvery-metallic lustre. Yttrium turnings ignite in air. Yttrium is found in most rare-earth minerals. Moon rocks contain yttrium and yttrium is used as a "phosphor" to produce the red colour in television screens.
  7. ZR The pride of home shopping network jewelry; Zirconium is a greyish-white lustrous metal. The finely divided metal can ignite spontaneously in air, especially at elevated temperatures. The solid metal is much more difficult to ignite.
  8. I thought it was already common knowledge that Wagner was the sign-hanging "culprit". Maybe I had heard Rubin say so over the radio. Remember that it was eventually revealed to be Randall K. Myers who scrawled; "Are We Really Trying?" on the lineup card next to Gregg Jefferies name all those years ago. Maybe that sort of behavior has something to do with being a slightly off-kilter lefty reliever?
  9. "I knew I was setting somebody up for a punchline, but I didn't know how it would play out." One thing I picked up from watching Johnny Carson over the years was that when the set-up for the joke is real obvious often the most subtle response is the best road to take. He was the master at that. BTW, I noticed that some players; Humber for instance, have their 2005 minor league stats in but not their 2006. Is this an oversight or just a sign of a work still in progress?
  10. ]We don't often (or ever?) see the verb "hurl" used to describe what pitchers do anymore, do we? [insert Victor Zambrano joke here]
  11. "Vargas is locked up for next year?" Not "locked up" as far as having an existing multi-year contract, but I think the standard here is that - as an under-6yr player - will still be under team control
  12. I don't go in for many conspiracy theories either, but I do think an attitude can creep in where stadium brass starts to cut corners on things like cleaning and other types of preventative maintenance figuring that making the place shine as much as possible is, in a way, counter-productive to their long term aims.
  13. "I'm having trouble buying that "shea is a dump" being PR ploy. Sometime in the early 90's, when the team sucked, I became aware of sneakers sticking to bathroom floor and vomit in the stands from the night before not being re-moved ..." Which, one could surmise, was a semi-deliberate attempt to plant the idea in patrons' heads that the place is a dump.
  14. The New York Mets today signed catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. He is expected to join the team and be in uniform on Tuesday. Alomar, 40, appeared in 27 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006 before being traded to the Chicago White Sox on July 23rd. With the two teams, Sandy hit a combined .278 (30-108) with eight doubles, one home run and 30 RBI in 46 games. This will complete the Alomar family if he gets into a ML game. Innuresting move. Guess it gives us (potentially) better offense if/when Casto goes down again.
  15. "Not a pillar or post obstructs the spectator's view from any seat in the stadium" Only overhangs
  16. The whole 'it's a dump because it sits on a dump' theory is more after the fact rationale than it was a reason for the conclusion in the first place.
  17. Ken Griffey admits the real reason behind his broken left hand: says "... he was wrestling with his daughter and two younger sons on his yacht in the Bahamas this past December when the oldest jumped in and knocked him off balance. He landed awkwardly on his left hand."

  19. Nb The name niobium was adopted officially by IUPAC in 1950, but a few commercial producers still like to refer to it as columbium. Niobium is a shiny, white, soft, and ductile metal, and takes on a bluish tinge when exposed to air at room temperatures for a long time. The metal starts to oxidize in air at high temperatures, and when handled hot must be done so under a protective atmosphere so as to minimize oxide production.
  20. Well, that's because he's right-handed.
  21. Wilpon confirmed to reporters yesterday that the Mets have applied to the league for the right to host the 2011 All-Star game
  22. The few pieces of "classic" games I've seen have used the original announcers; McCarver & Keith Jackson, for instance, on the '86 NLCS games. As far as the "guaranteed audience" for those college hoop games, the type of games I'm talking about that these sports channels pick up as time-fillers essentially draw test-pattern ratings. But they're probably close to free for the station (oft times these things are a barter arrangement concerning ad time) so it can't hurt to put them on. It's similar to the way Imus talks about the late-night and overnight shows on FAN when he says that they're only on because it's cheaper than shutting down the transmitter only to have to fire it up again the next morning.
  23. ]it's mid-February, give us some freakin' old games I've come to the conclusion that - aside from the handful of big conf/big team games that get onto the networks and then the tourney stuff - college basketball has become the sports channel equivelent of infomercials; they're cheap as hell to buy and so the stations can just run 'em out there as time fillers. SNY actually has an old game on now. I think part of the problem is that they don't own these old game films except for the few they're buying up one or two at a time which is why they seem to just recycle the same half-dozen games when they do show them. It's just like when someone pointed out that only SNY-property games were being used for the end-of-year high-light shows; this is still a budget-conscious start-up operation.
  24. Supposedly Mussina & Pavano kissed an made up, even to the point of Mussina admitting that if he was going to say what he said he should have done it directly to Pavano instead of going through the media. But in the mentality of the locker room - where a player's IQ is often equated with his BA or ERA - Pavano does have a lot to prove to his teammates and that there's a sense that he wasn't working all that hard to overcome his injuries. It's become almost fashionable for callers to sports-talk radio to describe themselves as 'long-suffering' when talking about their chosen team. I've yet to hear a Yanqui fan use that term but I sense that it's coming.
  25. All they're really doing here is adding those tie games stopped by rain (probably less than 1-2 per/yr in all MLB) to the list of what qualifies as a "suspended game". Rain games had previously been treated differently than those stopped for different reasons: curfews, blackouts, etc. Every few years they threaten to up the enforcement of those time rules on pitchers and batters. I'll believe it when I see it.
