  1. The thing about going on contact there is that there's very little downside. By staying it's 2nd & 3rd -- but by going, even if you're thrown out, it's still 1st & 3rd with the same # of outs. What often happens there is that the runner is free to go unless it's a come-backer or hard-hit to a corner infielder and I suspect what happened is that Gotay froze waiting to see if it would get by Howard and then figured it was too late to re-start again. We all know that Newhan wasn't waiting around so I don't think that the 'wait til it gets through' order was on.

]Valentin can play the OF in a pinch: He played CF in the World Baseball Classic Or at least he could when he had two good legs. There's also the deal where we'll need to use a DH is 6 of the next 10 games. Exactly the kind of situation where you could use guys like Green or Alou so long as you've got a guy like Endy to cover for them. It's not the time to be shy on outfielders right now.
  3. Gets underway at 2PM EDT. - 5 minutes are being allowed for each of the 1st round picks, something that'll be a change for teams used to doing this thing in an almost rapid-fire fashion. Since there are no back-room deals to be made teams almost certainly won't need 5 minutes per pick although it wouldn't surprise me if there's some sort of unofficial minimum in order to give the BB2N crowd - who'll be manning the desks as ESPN2 televises this one - a chance to dazzle you with their knowledge of the player just selected (IOW: read what Baseball America has to say about him). And WOW, it's being held at a Disney facility too ... What a coincidence! After Round 1 things should go pretty quickly. No first round pick for us (#29 overall was given up for Moises) so, again, our picks are 42, 47, 77, 93 & 99 as we picked up a few for losing Robo Hernandez & Bradford. Then, it's #123 and every 30 picks after that: 153, 183, 213, ...

The logical immediate move is to DL Endy and activate Valentin who was going to be activated today anyway. That leaves you an outfielder short until Green (as early as Sunday) and/or Alou (who knows?) gets back but hopefully Easley can take up the slack. What sucks about this all is that Milledge would have had himself 100+ ABs by this point with more to come.

  15. ]but part of the reason people hate Arod to begin with is because of his audacity (the slap, the contract the glibness) and that, in the end, few players are big enough assholes to try it. Plus his 'hands in the air / what did I do?' look following the plays.
  16. Centerfield wrote: Isn't it funny how Jeter's two errors (without which the Sox would not have taken the lead) gets buried in the accounts of the game? AS were his two GiDPs in that game. BTW, guess who made the last out as the tying run in tonight's MFY game after they had scored three times in the 9th? Just for you CF
  17. NL teams have now all reached the 1/3 mark of the season (54 games). This is the first spot where I like to look at full-season projections - both good and bad - so I pick one for each team to have some fun with. 18. I heard Willie talking about his tourney over the weekend but I figured it wound up getting monsooned out. Work out whatever you have to do with your dad, but don't NOT do it because you're afraid of looking silly. If that winds up being the reason you skip it you'll regret it. Dust off your mitt and go throw a ball against a brick wall for 20 minutes in case you haven't thrown for a while.
  19. My first thought to the 'One Game Only' question was Gary Mathews Jr. ... except that he played in 2 despite only getting 1 AB: He pinch-hit once, but also pinch-ran in the next game (and was then traded).
  20. I've biked past Shea although not on a game day (and also past Keyspan & Yanqui Stadium on the same day). If it were up to me they'd have bike parking areas for the new place. There are some bike-friendly paths leading to that area from the south-east.
  21. Edgy DC wrote: You should alert the Mets media department. It should be noted on air. Seriously, you should. Facts like that one - or the one about the list of '1-game only' Mets - would be stuff that Gary Cohen (or Howie Rose, or say Adam Rubin) would eat up IMHO. I've fed columnists little tid-bits before and they've been happy to use them and even credit you.
  22. This game may end sometime tonight ... but I wouldn't count on it.
  23. The Giant pen can't win the award since neither HR actually consituted, by strict definition, a blown save, but the reaction of catcher Molina a split second after Ryan Howard made contact with the pitch which eventually wound up around the CF batter's eye was worth the price of admission all by itself.
  24. Oriole's closer Chris Ray is Sunday's winner. The assist, however, should go to skipper Sam Perlozzo since it was he who fell to the knee-jerk closer situation reaction and got burned by it. O's up 3-2 after 8-1/2 in Anaheim and starter Jeremy Guthrie is cruising on just 3 hits, no walks, and only 88 pitches. But it's the 9th inning so he brings in the closer and 7 pitches later the Angels are doing the jump-dance at home plate. - Figgins single - Vlad walk-off HR
  25. Well, they've already found Waldo so they're moving on to other targets.
