He's already said he'd be interested if they came calling and it's not like he's been overwhelmed with offers since his stint w/the ChiSox. It would depend on a number of factors, of course, but I don't think he turns it down just so he can remain bench coach for a half-season.
  2. With a decent chance that the ChiSox job will be open at the end of this year (Girardi is from Chicago) plus maybe the Yanqui job (if he can fight off Mattingly as designated Prince) and who knows what else ... I can't say as how I blame him either.
  3. O no! -- Girardi turns 'em down.
  4. ]Schmidt had surgery to repair an inflamed bursa, a torn labrum and a frayed biceps tendon Oh gee is THAT all? I didn't like that signing from the beginning due to his age and recent less serious injuries, but that's a real kick in the pants to LA. In other less drastic news: - Boston puts Curt Schilling on the 15-Day although no structural damage was supposedly found on his aching shoulder. I heard Peter Gammons on the radio yesterday saying that Schilling was so involved in off-field stuff over the winter that he came to camp somewhat out of shape and not having thrown and this all may be a result of that. Tough to just pick it up again like that when you're over 40.
  5. Beltran - 1.6 Wright - 1.0 Valentin - 0.5 Mota - 0.3 Feliciano - 0.3 Wagner - 0.3
  6. ="SteveJRogers"]I'm deadly serious, if anything is going to give this team a serious kick in the ass, which they so richly deserve, maybe that will do it, fall out of first place for the first time since the second day of the 2006 season. Yes, because the reason they're playing poorly is that they don't realize it yet and only through a drop in the standings will it occur to them. ]Boy, this team historically doesn't do well in these "down to the wire" years do they? And we know what kind of effect that'll have on this team.

  10. Cleveland, who have been desperately trying to re-build a bullpen, have released Hernandez after a not very good stint: 26 IPs, 49 baserunners; 6.23 ERA Don't think he's a very good candidate for a 3rd straight year at Shea
  11. Reports have it that the Os & Girardi have an agreement - although there are still details to be worked out before it's all official. Coupla sidenotes: 1) Leo Mazzone left Atlanta for Baltimore almost entirely to work with his friend Perlozzo (also for a shitload more money than Atlanta was paying). He'll be an interesting coaching FA at the end of the year. 2) Andy McPhail - the guy brought in from the Cubs to be team Prez - has long been the leading candidate to replace Selig. Bud keeps claiming that he's getting out soon but this might extend his final exit until who knows when.
  12. The original schedule had the Yanx in Sandy Eggo this week, but the Rox begged for a NYY visit and it was granted. They're getting a huge bump in attendance out of it all, although not all the fans appear to be theirs. It would actually serve them right if they got steamrolled in this series and wound up missing the playoffs by just a game or two ... but I don't think I'm going to root for that. It also suxx that MLB allows the schedule to be manipulated based on who does the better begging. I wonder if a request for a different inter-league opponent because you thought a team to be an easier mark and it increased your odds of making the playoffs would be granted?
  13. Brad Lidge to the DL. Strained oblique, maybe a month or more.
  14. New York used to consider itself above that kind of petty homerism.
  15. Mota - 1.5 Smith - 0.8 Schoeneweis - 0.7
  16. Who was the ex-player/announcer for Pittsburgh (was it Jim Rooker?) who said, during a game where the Pirates had a huge lead in Philly, that if they were to blow this game he'd walk back to Pittsburgh. Well, they did. And, while he didn't walk back that night, he did later organize a walk-a-thon connected to a charity and eventually made the cross-Pennsylvania trek on foot.
  17. If you're going to pitch like shit and field like shit at least it's good to do it on a night when Santana's pitching and you're going to hit like shit too.
  18. My screen is going to be showing 'House' reruns in a few minutes.
  19. I think the implication is, maybe HE is missing something.
  20. Thing is, if you're Girardi and know you can pretty much have at least a shot at whatever other managerial jobs that open between now and next April, would you go to work for a meddler like Angelos and butt heads (and payrolls) with the Yanx & Sawx every year? He's already agreed to talk with them but I wouldn't be surprised if he takes a pass on this one. * Hey, I'm Joel Youngblood!
  21. Maine - 3.9 Delgado - 1.4 Ledee - 1.4 LoDuca - 1.1 Reyes - 0.5 Green - 0.5 Wright - 0.7 Heilman - 0.3 Feliciano - 0.2
  22. Some amusing stuff about Cox's ejection history Also, considering the differences in their reputations, Torre's managerial ejection rate is surpringly close to that of Piniella.
  23. "I will be out-of-town with limited internet access so wanted to post this now" After further review, no penalty will be called for premature illumination. * Not only is Kendall's OBP at a pathetic level, so is his slugging. He recently hit his first HR in about 1,000 ABs which rocketed his IsoP number to a whopping .044. Only Minnesota's Luis Castillo is lower. * Even if Piazza were to start his rehab on time there was little point in rushing him back for this series. He can't DH obviously and wasn't even working out as a catcher in Spring Training. He may not have touched the gear since last fall at this point. * Glavine, Hernandez & Maine are the probables Looks like we might miss Haren as he's on tap for Wednesday. DiNardo (former Met farmhand), Kennedy & Blanton look to be in line.
  24. "Actually, an injured Lastings Milledge has very little trade value right now" I don't believe that. I mean he'll have to over his current injury and get back to playing, but just because Met fans were disappointed that he didn't set the world on fire immediately upon his call-up last year doesn't mean that his star plummeted in the minds of those who scout talent. He's still a promising player who's younger than most first-time callups.
  25. The thing is that by starting the voting as early as they do they leave those voters almost no choice but to cast votes for the old-time favorites and "name" players. The votes for whoever's actually having the better year start to come in later on but they don't always have enough time to make up the difference.
