  1. The book was a terrific history of that tumultuous year in NYC: riots, blackouts, mayoral races, Son of Sam, etc; with the ongoing Yanqui season weaving its way through the narrative. Baseball is cool in that way in that the everyday nature of it makes it a part of everyday life as opposed to football which becomes a once-a-week escape from it. This mini-series, being an ESPN production and all, is going to be more like the story of the '77 Yankee season with the goings on in the city as the backdrop instead of the other way around. I'll probably record the first couple and watch them when I get around to it even though my expectations aren't too high. ESPN has made movies/series out of Pete Rose, Dale Earnhardt, Bobby Knight and a few others and none were too well received.
  2. ]When Steinbrenner approached Martin in the managers office after losing the 76 WS and vowed to never again be humiliated like that because" this is my team now" is sounded so fucking childish. Hence, it's perfect.
  3. ESPN's track record of self-produced movies and mini-series isn't good, but Bronx is Burning is adapted from a real good book and the reviews have been at least decent. I probably would have given it a shot if they got around to putting it on tonight ... not that they won't rerun it.
  4. McCovey has various physical problems. Those crutches are neither a new nor a short-term thing. I haven't been watching this thing but how the hell can it be still going? Didn't it start around 8? I figured that ESPN - having run about 1,468 commercials all week for that 'Bronx is Burning' show - would have had it finish more or less on time. Berman's a crime against humanity.
  5. One thing Met fans need to keep in perspective here is that Milledge is still just 22 y/o - barely 8 months older than Gomez - and was, at the time of his callup last year, the youngest position player in all of MLB. What I'm afraid of is that too many are going to look at this trial (assuming he gets the post ASB callup) as a make-or-break deal even though he's coming off two months of inactivity and being thrown in after just a handful of minor league ABs. And, while I understand where he's not high on the likability scale of some fans, that still doesn't entirely explain the disconnect between the rep of his brief ML trial vs that of Gomez ----ABHXBHBAOBASLGWk RateIsoPMilledge1664013.241.310.380.069.139Gomez108275.250.303.333.053.083
  6. I tuned in for about 2 minutes ... just in time to see Mulvey give up a couple of rockets. It's tough to explain to those who never saw Juan Marichal pitch exactly what they missed.
  7. Lastings at Binghamton: 8 for 19 with a double, triple & HR
  8. Agreed on the colors. The greys work well and that's the best shade of orange.
  9. No interest in the HR derby. I always watch the AS Game but it's more of a casual watch, not one where I'm hanging on every pitch.
  10. Beltran - 1.8 Alomar - 0.4 Newhan - 0.5 Reyes - 0.5 Sele - 1.0 Schoeneweis - 0.8
  11. The key phrase which started this whole discussion was "came of age as a Met", meaning that it's not just limited to those who came up through the system. The ones who first broke through in the blue & orange - like Cone or Meyers - count for the same reason Maine does.
  12. Glavine - 1.6 Beltran - 2.4 Delgado - 1.5 Wright - 1.5 Gotay - 0.7 Heilman - 0.4 Smith - 0.5 Sele - 1.0 Wagner - 0.4
  13. Robin Williams is good in movies where the direction reins him in somewhat and doesn't let the movie become an RW stand-up routine with some loose plot fabricated around it. Judging just by the ads for this flick this doesn't seem like one of those times.

  15. Billy violates the 'Thou shalt not bring the tying run to the plate' rule ... but then gets out #2. * And I just became Tom - tonight's long ago starting pitcher - Glavine
  16. When this is all over I'd like to see a list of all of Garner's player and [u:918ed69f3d]position[/u:918ed69f3d] changes for the game. All the Astros are essentially out of positon to start with so it's not like he has anything to lose, but Man, he's made a ton of them tonight. Must have had at lest 3 different 1Bs and RFs alone.
  17. Actually, I just checked and he didn't play with uncle Julio. He did talk about him in the past though, maybe he was a coach in the StL system when Keith was coming up.
  18. metirish wrote: ...Keith loves Gotay. That's because he played with his uncle. In fact, he just called Julio 'Rueben'.
  19. PILE. IT. ON.
  20. It's midnight in Manhattan this is no time to get cute
  21. Hey, we got 3 days off coming up ... start using the starters!!
  22. I suspect Madonna knows full well that if she were to ever get rid of the multitude of dancers behind her, the video accompaniment, plus alkl the constant costume and "personna" changes, that people would stop listening farily quickly. It's like the old joke about what the one G. Dead fan said to the other when the dope ran out .... 'Hey man, this music SUCKS'
  23. Green seems to get the dinkiest hits and the hardest outs.
  24. Not that I'm complaining, but all these "successful" bunts haven't produced a run yet.
  25. They already hate you Carlos so you might as well knock a run in too.
