  1. If I'm Posada those buxx would have to be crazy-stupid for me to only accept a one-year deal. I'd want at least 2 + an option and I bet he can get it. Both he and Rivera are in the position to hold up the Yanx for piles of cash or threaten to leave them with huge tough-to-replace holes in their rosters.
  2. Beltran - 3.0 Schoeneweis - 0.5 Reyes - 1.0 Wright - 1.0 Anderson - 0.5 Conine - 0.5
  3. I'd be surprised if Posada winds up anywhere but the Bronx next year, but the negotiations for him are going to be interesting this winter. He's going to be a FA for essentially the first time, he still consistantly catches between 135-145 games/year (3rd most catcher ABs this year), and is coming off what is probably the best season of his career. On the other hand he turned 36 last week meaning that a deal of even 3 years would be difficult for a team to commit to for a backstop who'll turn 37, 38 & 39 during the contract -- although he can DH or play some 1B on occasion.
  4. BoSox get 9 hits (6 1Bs & 3 2Bs) plus 6 BBs and a HBP ... and lose 2-1 Man you almost have to try to not score with that many baserunners and they didn't even hit into any DPs. They did have one runner thrown out on the basepaths so there were 14 LOBs. 3rd time this year the DevilDogs beat Matsuzaka - though this one hardly his fault
  5. I like the part where the Texas 8 & 9 hitters combined for 8 hits and [u:3f8ad4bc49]14 RBIs[/u:3f8ad4bc49] - yet #3 hitter Michael Young had [u:3f8ad4bc49]none[/u:3f8ad4bc49] Or that Baltimore actually led 3-0 Or that the score was "only" 14-3 after 7 Baltimore pitcher Brian Burres gets charged with 8 ER in 2/3 of an inning. THAT can't be good for the ol' ERA Time of Game = 3:21 I think there have been 3-2 NYY games that have taken longer than that
  6. Atlanta SS Edgar Renteria came off the DL today ... and then was pulled in the 1st inning of tonight's game after injuring his ankle.
  7. At least not for a couple of weeks. Phils placed star LHP Cole Hamels on the DL today with elbow problems, knocking him out of next week's Mets/Phils series for sure and maybe longer. Braves also got bit ('tho less hard) by putting LHP Chuck James on the DL. Replacement Jo-Jo Reyes pitched in his place last night and was greeted by a run barrage in Cincy.
  8. And sending Anderson down (even assuming it could be done without losing him) WOULD affect his availability for post-season and I can't imagine they want to cross him out of the picture at this point. Either wait to activate Endy or lose Sele to make room for him. You figure that you can go with one fewer hurler in October anyway and he looks to be the odd man out. Would suck for him getting dropped at this point but he really doesn't have much of a role here and would be much more easily replaceable once Sept 1 rolls around. Ahhh, it's too early to be talking about October rosters anyway.
  9. Game on ESPN2 for youse outta towners B Giles - RF Blum - 3B Bradley - LF Gonzalez - 1B Cameron - CF Greene - SS Kouzmanoff - 3B Bard - C Peavy - P Reyes - SS Castillo - 2B Wright - 3B Beltran - CF Delgado - 1B Alou - LF Milledge - RF DiFelice - C Lawrence - P We beat Peavy back on July 17th for our only win of that series out in Sandy Eggo. El Ducky tossed a 7-inning 2-hitter and we got to Peavy for 3 runs over 6 then smacked the pen around for 4 mainly against the since departed Royce Ring
  10. Yeah, Cashman was on the radio the other day taking great pains to NOT spell out exactly what the specific rules are, just to say that the org did lay them out and that they're to be strictly adhered to. But I heard the same details as Dickshot's post above so there is at least a public perception of what they are. (the preceding message was brought to you by the; 'Yeah, I end sentences with a prepositions ... ya got a problem with that?' society)
  11. The 'Joba Rules' are also partially a Cashman-inserted set of rules to protect himself. The guy had some injury problems his final year in college and didn't really pitch again until the Hawaiin Winter League. Since then he's gone from A-ball to the majors in 4 months and, while they certainly want to win this season, they also are depending on this guy as part of their rotation for next year. It'll be interesting to see when/if they deviate from their self-imposed standards. During the two remaining Yanx/Sawx series? In September?? What I'm getting a kick out of in this whole affair is Yanqui fans who are ready to annoint him the savior even to the point of throwing Mariano overboard. Torre is actually getting criticism for bringing Rivera into save situations if Chamberlain is available. All that said, it would be remiss of us not to mention how nice it's been to wake up the last two mornings and see the late results from the west coast. An extra-inning loss on Mon-night/Tues-morn followed by a Garret Anderson-led (TEN RBIs !!) drubbing on this morning's highlights. * I'm King Knog !!
  12. Lawrence - 1.0 Reyes - 1.5 Beltran - 3.0 Castillo - 1.0 Wright - 0.5
  13. Green is barely a better bet than DiFelice to get a hit these days. The bunt strategy works best here because it was DiFelice due up, AND you could get through his AB while staying out of the GiDP to get the runner into scoring position, AND setting it up for the best off-the-bench guy who happens to have good numbers against Hoffman. I like that better than depending on several PHers to come through before you get to the top of the order.
  14. When I need one run, against Hoffman, and would have to PH two straight hitters while removing my best defensive catcher in a tight game ... yes.
  15. I thought about Colbert as he was a devastating hitter for a time, but would have discarded him as having too short a Padre career. Turns out he beats Winfield's total by 11 HRs. The cool trivia question I remember about Colbert was that he held (and probably still does) the record for having the highest pct of his team's RBIs in a season. -- In 1972 he had 111 for a team that [u:de8e4a2635]only totaled 452[/u:de8e4a2635]. No other Padre had as many as 50 that season.

So do I - as I've mentioned a few (thousand) times on these same airwaves - but ... - in the 9th inning - needing one run to tie the game - with a light-hitting 3rd-string catcher due up - facing an all-time closer that's tough to score on in any situation the sac bunt was absolutely the right move in that situation. (IMHO of course).
  17. Beltran - 4.6 Milledge - 0.9 Anderson - 1.1 Castillo - 1.1 Reyes - 0.9 Maine - 1.4
  18. Murray Chass in Sunday's NYTimes reveals that Rizzuto had been lying about his age all along and had actually been born in 1916, not 1917 as was the "public" date, and was therefore just shy of his 91st birthday when he died. Nice job by Phil for getting away with it all that time and good on Chass for sitting on the story (after promising Rizzuto) for 30-some years.
  19. OHernandez - 4.2 Beltran - 2.2 Anderson - 1.6 Green - 1.0 Wright - 0.5 Sosa - 0.25 Feliciano - 0.25
  20. Inspired by the game Arizona pitcher Micah Owings had the other day and watching Rick Ankiel on TV: some fun facts courtesy of Baseball-Reference's 'Stat of the Day' As mentioned in another thread, Owings not only hit 2 HRs, but also had a total of 4 hits, 4 runs scored & 6 RBIs - a combination of Hits, RS & RBIs that no PLAYER had done since ARod some time in 2005. - His 11 total bases (2 HRs, 1 2B, 1 1B) is the most for a pitcher since Jim Tobin (the only pitcher to hit 3 HRs in one game) had 12 in 1942. In the "Retrosheet Era" (since 1957) 9 or more total bases by a pitcher had been done just 10 times; included in that were TWO seperate 9 TB games by Lew Burdette 7 years apart, and two from Braves pitcher Tony Cloniger which occured just 3 weeks apart! in 1966. The most recent was Dontrelle Willis at Shea last September (2 HRs + a single). Don Cardwell also had 9 TBs in a game but not as a Met. - 2 HRs in a game by a pitcher has been done 10 times (now 11) since 1976 including the one by NYM Walt Terrell at Wrigley in 1983. 3 of the other 9 came against the Mets: Willis, Derek Lilliquist (1990), and Larry Christensen (1976). - 4 times since '57 a pitcher had as many as 6 RBIs, most notably the 9 when Tony Cloniger hit Grand Slams in consecutive ABs. - Only 10 pitchers have had 4 hits in a game since 1970 including Steve Avery at Shea in 1990. To find a pitcher with 5 hits in a game you have to go back to Mel Stottlemyre in 1964. - And only Cincy hurler Danny Jackson scored 4 runs in a game during this era. The kicker to the whole thing is that Owings' game put him on ALL of those lists at the same time - all while pitching a 7 IP, 0 BB, 3-hitter. He did, however, serve up more HRs than he hit as all 3 hits he allowed in the game were solo HRs.

  22. Castillo certainly seems like an excitable boy (they all said)
  23. I'm surprised no LHP to face Green
  24. THAT is why Wily Mo Pena is so intriguing to teams.
  25. ]2) somebody else with his name. First and last names.
