  1. ]BUBBA WHO? (5/16/00) --Bubba Carpenter, never heard from before or again, homers off Turk Wendell in the eleventh for a Rockie uprising I was at that one - cold night. It's the one where Turk not only pulled off the 'fake to 3rd-throw to 1st' pick-off but did so twice in the same inning. Unfortunately he gave up the HR first. Oh well. Bubba Carpenter actually surfaced in the Met system the next year but never made it to the big club.
  2. Martinez - 2.1 Muniz - 1.0 Heilman - 0.6 Schoeneweis - 0.6 Wagner - 0.6 Reyes - 1.5 Beltran - 0.9 Schneider - 0.9 Tatis - 0.9 Delgado - 0.9
  3. Since the pen's near-debacle in Philly during the 'They win the damn thing' game: 18-1/3 IPs, 0 R, 2 H, 4 BBs
  4. And here I was just about to chastise Endy for bunting into Schneider and the bottom of the lineup ... and it works. It's still not a good play - even though he was more bunting for the hit than a sac. Muniz being PH'd-for is winless in MLB but should be in line for this one if the lead holds.
  5. Pedro somehow indicated to FOX reporter Ken Rosenthal (sign language?, smoke signals?, semaphore?) that he has a strained groin but that he's being more precautionary than actually injured. So until further notice, that's their story and they're sticking to it.
  6. Murcer came into the big leagues in kind of a tough situation - as a switch-hitting SS-turned-CFer from Oklahoma who naturally, and unfairly, got touted as "the next Mantle". But he eventually became very popular in his own right with a real good career even though he had virtually no chance to replicate the career of the Mick.
  7. Announced by YES after today's NYY game
  8. Church was checked out at The Cleveland Clinic [insert joke here about the link between that city and headaches] and was told that his recent problems are migraine related and not the lingering effects of his concussions.
  9. Angel Pagan played in this game too.
  10. or at least rumors of one. He started in PSL last night -- gave up 2 runs on 3 hits (all singles) over 5-2/3, both runs look like they were let in by the reliever. Also walked one and struck out 5.
  11. Halliday 2-hits the Yanx - his 7th complete game of the season But Boston and TB lose also. That's 5 in a row by TB including 2 straight to Cleveland who were coming off a 12 game losing streak Atlanta shut out again. At least it was Peavy this time so that's somewhat of an excuse but they're now 13 - 32 on the road and are a season high (low) 7 games under .500
  12. The biggest obvious difference between this game and any one of a number of games earlier in this season is that this time they GOT the third out (on several occasions) instead of almost getting out of the inning as was all too common. I'd bet that our 2-out runs-allowed pct is falling back towards normal levels. When I checked a few weeks back it was by far the highest in the league.
  13. Perez - 3.6 Easley - 2.0 Reyes - 1.2 Schneider - 0.9 Heilman - 1.0 Sanchez - 0.3 Feliciano - 0.3 Wagner - 0.7
  14. Your boy gets some ink in a BA chat Q: John Raynor seems to me to be an elite prospect that doesn't get talked about a ton, could he be the CF of the future for Florida (instead of Maybin)? A: He's not an elite prospect. But you're right, he doesn't get talked about a lot. He was taken out of UNC-Wilmington as a senior in the ninth round in 2006. He's 24 years old so his "prove it" time is coming. He could play a good defensive center field because of his speed, but his arm is below-average. He's a big threat on the bases, but it will come down to whether he can hit. His Double-A numbers look pretty good so the Marlins might be willing to give him a chance sometime soon. My bet would be on a major league camp next spring
  15. I smelled this one a mile away.
  16. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: MFY announcers speculated McLouth cleverly lulled Veras into serving him a fat one by tricking him into thinking a bunt was on. Didn't a Met supposedly do that to the MFY staff too? So either the Yanx staff is particularly vunerable to this ruse or their announcers are convinced it's the only way anyone can take their guys downtown.
  17. They did try some organized "skills" type competition one year (a la the NBA or NHL) back in the mid '90s sometime - but Barry Larkin managed to injure himself during some throwing drill and that was the end of that.
  18. ="AG/DC"]I just wonder if there's something in the whole econmics of the thing that makes this happen. Does a manager last longer winnning some/losing some by the prevailing wisdom than winnning some/losing some by bucking it? I'm beginning to think it's a little like basketball where the coaches there are afraid that in high-scoring games they'll be thought of as 'roll the ball out there' do-nothings that they choke the hell out of the game instead. I honestly think most of them would rather lose 71-68 than win 112-107 just so they won't lose face with the coaching fraternity and the media. ]The funny thing is that the play Willie perhaps got the most criticism for was when he didn't bunt in the NLCS. I probably heard two complaints about Willie (and Torre, and Howe) bunting too little for every one I heard about bunting too much.
  19. Last night, Yanx-Pirates tied at 2 in the home 7th; Pitt gets the leadoff guy on and the mgr (I assume it was called from the dugout) has Nate McLouth bunting - the All-Star rep, leadoff hitter with 52 XBHs going into last night Nate McLouth! So after fouling off the first attempt they take it off ... and McLouth hammers it about 15 rows deep in the RF seats. Game ended 4-2
  20. The 1972 ASG is considered maybe the most star-studdedness one of them all: [u:1b8e87faa2]NL HoFers[/u:1b8e87faa2]: - 5 position starters: Morgan, Mays, Aaron, Stargell, Bench (in that order at the top of the lineup btw) - 3 reserves: Lou Brock, Billy Williams, Roberto Clemente - 5 pitchers: Bob Gibson (starter), Carlton, Jenkins, Seaver, Sutton [u:1b8e87faa2]AL HoFers[/u:1b8e87faa2]: - 4 position starters: Carew, Jackson, Yastrzmski, Brooks Robinson - 2 reserves: Carlton Fisk, Luis Aparicio - 4 Pitchers: Jim Palmer (starter), Catfish Hunter, Gaylord Perry, Nolan Ryan
  21. Muniz - 0.5 Schoeneweis - 0.7 Sanchez - 0.5 Wagner - 0.3 Tatis - 3.5 Wright - 1.4 AReyes - 0.5 Beltran - 1.0 Schneider - 0.5 Reyes - 0.6 Maine - 0.5

  23. http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/riverju01.shtml He came up with the Yanx before winding up in Anaheim - just turned 30 Had a couple a pretty good mostly-full seasons including a real good one in 2006 But then broke his leg (or something serious like that) and missed virtually all of '07 and has played only sparingly so far in '08 He's been mentioned as a possible Met target since before the start of the season.
  24. Nice to see that the union is on top of things with the players' health when it comes to concussions after blatantly ignoring it for so long on the subject of steroids. Overall, I believe there's something in the standard player contract where they have follow the advice of the team's physician(s) when it comes to being DL'd or whatnot, although they're always free to get a second opinion before undergoing a procedure. Now if the team doc goes and witholds info from the player - as the NYTimes piece says in the Barrett case - that's obviously a different story.
