  1. Gotta figure that original Thursday ticket-holders go to the noon game and Wednesday rain-checks get the night-cap.
  2. And Eddie admits to not having seen it either, but rather got that idea via some of those who had both seen it and liked Tony meaning that the perception of Rubin's attitude was filtered through those eyes & ears.
  3. Well nobody seems to think he'll stay a SS in the long run but, yeah, with '25' speed you wouldn't think he ever would have become one in the first place.
  4. Eddie C's speculation on what set Omar on the road to anti-Runin-ism: When the press conference got delayed (as it always seems to be) SNY had some time to kill and spent part of it with Burkhardt interviewing Rubin. This was shown on the TVs in both the offices and clubhouse and apparently some thought they heard some gloating in his answers at having "gotten" Tony. Ergo that ticks Omar off and leads to the impromptu verbal caning.
  5. ="seawolf17"]Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco to the Phils for four minor-leaguers. If you're tradin' for Ben Fran-Cisco be sure to include some prospects in your plan ... Two years in a row the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" have had the CY Winner, and two years in a row they've traded him before the following season was out.
  6. "... and hes a legit 25 runner with well below-average athleticism" I had heard his speed was below average but that's a bit disturbing. '25' is almost as slow as one can get on the 20-80 scale scouts use. It shocks me that a teenager on what's described as a 6' 3" - 175 frame could be THAT slow. I mean someone tells me '25' on the speed scale and I'm thinking that qualifies you to be named an honorary Molina. Anything below that and your moniker becomes Mo Vaughn II

  8. "How would you score that, anyway? 1B and PO? GO/9?" One would be a single and a 7-3 putout, the other a straight 7-3 putout.
  9. Surprised to see that Clement has been in AAA all year. Not that he's finished by any means but as a guy who turns 26 in a few weeks he's been disappointing for a #3 overall pick from the loaded 2005 draft (6 picks ahead of Pelfrey). Don't know anything about the other guys. Last one out of Pittsburgh turn out the lights. Nady, Bay, Wilson, Snell, McLouth, LaRoche (and probably others I'm forgetting) in approx the last 365 days.
  10. I did it once in a softball game from [u:gljle618]Left[/u:gljle618]field. And another time my throw just flat beat the guy to the bag for the force. Or maybe those were in the World Series, the details are a bit hazy.
  11. ... and the reason I rarely read them Writer John Walsh at 'Hardball Times' explains: ... there are a few good baseball-related stories in the book ['The Mick' -- pub 1985']. The best came as Mantle describes his role in the 1952 World Series victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers: MM: My personal highlights were: homering off Joe Black in the deciding game and Robinson hitting a line drive to me in right center, three skips into my glove. He rounded first base, acting like he would stop. I used to pick guys off first on the play pretty often. This time Casey had told me that Robinson would be watching for my throw. So after I caught the ball on the bounce, I faked a throw behind him. And sure enough, Robinson took off for second. I threw to Billy and we had him out by ten or fifteen feet. I'll never forget the sight: Jackie getting up, dusting himself off, and giving me a little tip of the hat, his eyes saying, "I'll get you next time." After the Series he came into our clubhouse and shook my hand. "You're a helluva ballplayer," he said. I thought, "Man, what a class guy. I never could have done that, not in a million years." I'm a really bad loser. Walsh: That is a great story. It's shows (once again) Jackie Robinson's competitive spirit as well as his graciousness. We learn something about Mantle, too, his admitted lack of sportsmanship in defeat. We get a glimpse of the baseball smarts of Casey Stengel, who instructed Mantle on how to take advantage of Robinson's aggressiveness on the base paths. I just love this anecdote. Except for one thing: It's completely false. The writer then goes on to talk about how in searching for details of the play he found ... nothing. Mantle never picked Robinson off base in that WS or any other despite the details of the supposed memory. And even as to the threat of throwing behind a runner so as to pick him off 1st which Mick claims to have done "pretty often"; SURVEY SAYS .... Not Once in his whole career did Mickey actually do that!! Fuzzy memories are one thing. Wholly invented legends are another.
  12. We suck at Schaefer-ing lately. Without the threat of a deadline hanging over out heads we've let our PotG voting go to pot over the last week or so. I've just gone back and caught up after 5 days of neglect - and there are some games from the Brave series now on page 3 with only a handful of votes on them. Yeah, voting after losses suxx but (with the usual caveat where nothing is mandatory around here) we'd hate to see this project die of neglect.

  18. I can think of several people I'd like to see wear the Milano baby-tee things (including Alyssa herself) but you, LWFS, are not among them.
  19. Buehrle falling apart (relatively) gives up 3 in bottom 7 and is pulled trailing 4-1 In other O-o-T news, Marlins' Ross Gload hits a 2R PH HR in the 9th to beat Atlanta (we were going to game on someone in this tilt and I'd prefer it be the Braves
  20. Fans can wear anything they want and it won't bother me. Of course [u:397qasdk]I'm[/u:397qasdk] not going to wear any of it, but as long as that stuff is kept off the field it's OK w/me
  21. ="Rockin' Doc":2c9ktg8a]Alexi Cassilla (.161) works a protracted walk to end the perfection.[/quote:2c9ktg8a] He was 0-2 on him too before losing him. I tell you, watching Buehrle is a pleasure. I clicked over between ABs of the Met game and he threw at least 5 pitches before the next batter walked to the plate in our game. That game's in the 7th inning and it's just 1:40 old. In his postgame interviews following his perfect game Buehrle said I don't see any need to walk around the mound between pitches. Pitching isn't that hard. You get the sign, nod your head, and throw the ball. MFS62 Jul 28 2009 09:32 PM A quick side note (maybe this belongs in the "In The Booth" thread): During the Mets post-game radio show tonight, Wayne Hagan said "Mark was relieved by ex-Houston Astro Octavio Dotel". Methinks Wayne needs to take some additional classes in his Met-ucation. Back to topic. Mark is a pitcher, in the finest sense of the word. When I saw the highlights of his perfect game, I don't recall seeing the radar gun top 87 MPH on any of his pitches. I agree with Doc, more pitchers should emulate him. 22. Not only was Castillo out but that was a bad send by Razor w/0 outs even if he was really safe.
  23. I read someplace that Rubin was actually scheduled to be off this week (or at least this series) and even came in on one of his days off specifically because they were having the press conf - so, at least for now, I wouldn't look at his absence as anything other than just coincidence. I guess that makes Adam like the guy in 'Clerks' who whines through half the movie that "I'm not even supposed to be here today" as all kinds of shit is happening to him and around him.
  24. Castillo's season OBA = .402
