  1. And I wouldn't want all of you forget what this IL weekend is really about: why it's the Yanx vs Torre of course!! First time since he left them (or they left him, or whatever) and I almost wonder if the Yanx requested (and by 'requested' I mean 'demanded') that this series be played in LA where MFY mgmt wouldn't have to hear ol' Joe getting cheered on the hallowed grounds. Michael Kay has gone out of his way recently to talk about how he and Joe aren't about to have any pow-wows. Was never real clear on what caused the split between them - maybe Kay thought Joe was stealing his credit of all those WS championships. I did hear him the other day talking about how he can't wait to get to LA so he could see and talk to his old friend -- [pause for effect] -- Don Mattingly. I guess we can add MK to the list of talking heads who wear as a badge of honor how disliked they are by some of the guys they cover(ed) or even even don't cover on a regular basis. M&MD were frequently big on that; "oh _____ wants no part of this show" - at least to the guys they weren't sucking up to. Benigno gets that way too on occasions; "I'm so tough on the Jets that their whole front office hates me" Save your ego trips guys. Report the stories, don't become part of them.
  2. I remember when he was in Miami all the FAN-iacs telling us that he'd never pitch well against the Mets on account of that NY-phobia thing he had. Then when he did the story changed to where he wouldn't pitch well against the Mets IN NYC ... and that quickly fell to pieces too. I suppose the story eventually wound up where he couldn't pitch against the Mets, at Shea, late in the season or something nit-picking like that, but after about 7 straight saves most of them had shut up.
  3. It means that Toronto - already the ML leader in HRs - will get to tee off in CBP
  4. Dessens - 1.0 Parnell - 0.4 Igarashi - 0.4 JFeliciano - 1.2 Wright - 1.0 Reyes - 1.0 Bay - 0.5 Tejada - 0.5 Carter - 0.5
  5. The one positive I take out of this is that I expected them to come back tonight and am disappointed that they didn't. Very different attitude vs last year.
  6. That friggin 2-0 pitch was the killer. After Coke missed with the first 2 pitches, Wright should have been zoning for an inside pitch he could drive and left anything else alone. If he lays off that pitch it's 3-0 and Coke's in a world of hurt.
  7. Seeing how the Marlins & Bobby aren't scheduled to speak until tomorrow that sounds a bit premature
  8. 3 Ks in the inning for Bobby P - two with FBs in the 95 range and the last w/a slider
  9. Galarraga - already not perfect (leadoff walk to Reyes)
  10. I think that sounds like a fair deal - as in fair for both sides - keeping in mind that there's nothing in that article suggesting it's anything other than names being thrown against the wall. But, yeah, it would be a tough one to make with Beltran being as uncertain as he is - and the dilemma is that the longer you wait to make it the fewer starts you'd get out of Lee. Right now you're probably looking at about 17 or 18 and will lose one for every five days that a deal isn't made, starts that you'll never get back on the other end.
  11. Prado = K Heyward = 6-3 Chipper = 5-3 2-0 White Sox is your final
  12. 2-out, 2R, 8th-inning HR by Paul Konerko in New Comiskey (or whatever it's called) breaks up a scoreless tie vs Braves Gavin Floyd had been pitching a 1-hitter - guess big Bobby Jenks will be on to try and close it. 1st place before the night is out looking possible!
  13. 1985 was Tom Paciorek - or Larry Bowa if you prefer. oe: oops I see Bowa has already been guessed
  14. But neither of those guys were late-season acquisitions IIRC.
  15. Looks like Jerry has gone from '2B must hit 2nd' to 'CF must hit 2nd'

The team is good through the end of next year so it's not like they're under any immediate gun, while the player/agent probably want to put as big a gap between the injury/lost time/slow start period and the negotiation process as possible lest the team get the idea that objects in their rear-view mirror are closer than they appear.
  17. Chad Ochoseis wrote: The Mets, no strangers to players accused of sleazy sexcapades OK, beats me. I can think of Ambiorix Burgos (which was sleazy, but not a "sexcapade") and, if you want to stretch to recent scandals involving Mets of yesteryear, Art Shamsky's divorce looniness. Anything else this decade? She's probably harking back to the Port St Lucie sleaziness of the early '90s
  18. It's the MLBN game tonight for you non-NYers
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Deserves ASG consideration. Considering that the hype started today for Strasburg to the ASG, Dickey would be a better story - particularly since even those promoting the Strasburg angle pretty much admit that it's mostly for pr reasons.
