  1. Never got anywhere near .500 after Silvio (mother...). I got this - even if no one else did.
  2. 'Conventional wisdom' def had the O's moving forward as the Halladay-less Jays falling back although just the opposite has happened. Much of this was based on the young players Baltimore had coming along but, like it is with a lot of prospects, the pitching (Matusz and others) hasn't come around as quickly as hoped. Also CFer Adam Jones has shown his flaws (see JCL's KTE) and catcher Matt Weiters, who was described as an unholy cross between Mauer's defense and Piazza's offense, isn't either yet.
  3. Samuel is 2-8
  4. The whole division v division thing never works well because it can't - the differing number of teams per division and in each league insures that. After hosting the Mets the Orioles jetted out to San Fran to play the Giants (with no day off even). And, yes, they lost again (18 of 21).
  5. Halladay v Sabathia tonight -- that means a Yanqui game might even get in in under 3:15
  6. And the one way to keep demands like this going up all the time is to bend over backwards and give the guy whatever he wants. At some point you just got to say no and walk away. He's got his 2nd HR and he could have had his first but the fan prefers to keep it - either because he thought he could use it to pry anything he wanted out of two orgs or because he's convinced Carter is going to hit 500 in his career and he'll put his kid through college on the profits he'll reap from hanging onto the ball. Good luck with that dude.
  7. I guess he was an Orioles fan and the Orioles didn't want to play ball? From what I read it's more like the Mets balked at the guy's increasing list of demands that had nothing to do with them (he wanted O's stuff) and told him to kiss off rather than become a middle-man in a negotiation between the fan and the O's.
  8. For some reason that link's not coming up with me so maybe this is covered in there -- but Heath was one of the two guys who clearly clashed with Peterson when he was the pitching coach ( JW Seo was the other) so even if he were pissed off at the org it's not like it serves his purpose to keep that going long after the reason for it has passed (even though he kind of has). Players, in general, rarely care who's in the front office five minutes after the ink's dry on their contract and are therefore unlikely to hold grudges or divide team into some fan-like black-hat/white-hat dichotomy that they'll cling to for life. In short: who cares what he says now or has said in the past as it's pretty much meaningless IMO.
  9. Except that the WS is such a small sample size that it's tough to point to it as meaningful of anything as far as league-v-league goes. I mean if we could wave a magic wand and put Pittsurgh in the WS against say Tampa this fall there always a chance the Pirates would win. IL play, which involves close to 250 games and matches up the good, bad, and mediocre in each league against each other, gives you a better picture of which league is stronger at that time.
  10. 42-42 to date despite the AL's edge in RS/RA (402-374) over what has been two series for most teams. The front page of BB-Ref.com shows the running total of this.
  11. Saturday at Camden looks a lot more crowded than Sunday was. Probably fewer NYers by the end of the week but also so few Orioles fans that they were still drowned out by the reduced number in blue & orange - although, to be fair, the black and orange fans were taken out of the game pretty early on Sunday courtesy of Wright & Carter (and Millwood).
  12. Pelfrey - 1.3 Igarashi - 0.15 Valdes - 0.15 Wright - 2.4 Reyes - 0.5 Bay - 2.4 Carter - 1.5 Cora - 0.8 Feliciano - 0.8
  13. John Sickels gives his evaluation
  14. A force play at home and a pop to shallow CF lets the Cubbies squeak by as ChiSoc leave em loaded.
  15. Marmol adds a walk and a balk plus one K Now an IW loads the bases for Paul Konerko.
  16. P-hitter Pierre (lefty on lefty) leads off top 9 with a clean single ... and Lou immediately pulls Lilly Marmol on to try and preserve the win.
  17. Innuresting game going on in Chicago - dual no-hitters thru 6 innings. Gavin Floyd for the ChiSox and Ted Lilly for the Cubbies Neither is perfect as there have been several walks, HBPs and an error.
  18. If this was set up so that players were only allowed to vote for one 'worst' and not list several the fact that, out of more than 60 full-time umps, three guys garnered 94% of the vote is very telling about those three. On a possibly not-related note, Selig has just put Frank Robinson in charge of the umpires (as well as several other things under whatever his new job description is) replacing Jimmy Lee Soloman who was "re-assigned" to different duties within MLB. I heard Buster Olney on the radio today talking about how things had gotten a bit lax and maybe a bit too chummy between the old boss and the umps and that there's no doubt that F-Robbie was brought in as "a leg-breaker".
  19. ESPN.com (or ESPN the magazine, or ESPN the dessert topping I can't keep track anymore) conducted a survey of 100 ML players (50 NL & 50 AL - or about 13% of the league) about umpires. The 'no surprise' part? This: Worst: CB Bucknor (37%) - Joe West (35%) - Angel Hernandez (22%) Unless you consider Angel Hernandez not being named on 107% of the ballots qualifying as a surprise. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5281467&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines
  20. Sunday: NL goes 7-6 with the Chicago-v-Chicago tilt still to come. Biggest problem is that the entire NL East won so it's status quo heading into Monday.
  21. SteveJRogers wrote: Hmmmm. Anyone remember if there was a big to do about the Orioles doing that for a guy that never played for the St Louis/Browns/Baltimore Orioles franchise? (Minor league O's do not count) the way it was, and still is in some corners, with the Robinson Rotunda here? Yeah, there was rioting in the streets, wanton destruction of public property, and threats of boycotts.
  22. The heat at Camden reminded me that, in addition to the story I told in the IGT about being in Camden Yards during Lady Di Di-ing weekend, I was also there during the great OJ chase week. I remembered cuz it was hot as hell that day too - probably hotter than today's 93 or so. As far as I know, no one of any fame either died or caused deaths today so I can stop making the connection.
