  2. First time above .500 since Aug 24 - one game after playing the Pirates last time around. Pittsburgh, it's good for what ails 'ya
  3. Man, the Pirate infielders have justmissed a ton of balls this week - and that's in addition to the ones they've just plain booted. Not surprising that you see that sort of stuff from a last place club.
  4. Reyes SS Feliciano RF Pagan CF Wright 3B Davis 1B Thole C Duda LF Tejada 2B Pelfrey RHP
  5. [amateur medical diagnosis]The rhomboid - and, yes, it's so named because of its rhombus-like shape - is one of the bigger muscles near the top of the back. The good news is that it (unlike Johan's deal) is not part of the more complicated inner workings of the shoulder and, once healed, shouldn't have any effect on his throwing ability.[/amateur medical diagnosis]
  6. Bob Melvin has been given permission by his current employer, the Mets, where he does not appear to be a leading candidate for the managerial job, for at least two managing interviews. But, but, but ... Michael Kay told us that it's already been decided and that Melvin has the job all wrapped up.
  7. I gotta say the funniest thing about this whole episode - based on a small sampling of fan/host responses - isn't that folks are stumbling upon the revelation that ballplayers will take calls they didn't earn. Everyone over the age of six knows that outfielders and wide receivers are going to hold the ball up and claim a catch even after it bounced three times on the way, or that flopping hoopsters and futballers try to draw calls from intimidated refs. No, the funniest part is from the ones who say; "but I assumed Jeter would be different" Good Lord folks, did the tooth fairy tell you that?
  8. Mejia - 1.0 Misch - 0.4 Dessens - 0.6 PFeliciano - 0.5 Takahashi - 0.4 Hessman - 1.0 Reyes - 1.3 Pagan - 1.8 Beltran - 1.5 Davis - 1.0 Wright - 0.5

  11. Yup, fun series. All three games decided by one run. Division lead changed hands three times in three days. Only real problem is that the three games put together took nearly 13 hours to play. Our game tonight finished quicker then theirs and ours featured 15 runs, one injury/pitcher change and about a dozen pitching changes in all. That one was 4-3 in 8-1/2 innings. Now the Yanx have tomorrow off, get the Orioles over the weekend, then meet the Rays for four more in da Bronx starting on Monday.
  12. I was just about to celebrate the sweep until I realized that we got these guys again tomorrow. Hooray for Pirates!!
  13. And now, leading off in the 9th when the whole world knows Jeter is most clutch, he strikes out. Payback's a bitch.
  14. Yes, but by turning the TV off you missed Tampa's Dan Johnson hitting his 2nd 2R HR of the game a half-inning later. Rays lead 4-3 in the bottom 8th proving, once again, that cheaters don't win.
  15. Which is I suppose better than an ugly strain. Anyway, that's what they're saying about Mejia: an acute strain of a muscle in the back of his shoulder. MRI to follow, yadda, yadda, yadda
  16. This is the OFer that Burkhardt and the GKR boys were talking about during tonight's game - one I confess I had never heard of prior to now. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=puello001ces At first glance: - Doesn't turn 20 until next spring but already has a full year in a full-season league under his belt plus a few short seasons. - not much in the way of power and, even with the disclaimer about that usually being the last thing to come around being thrown in, 1 HR and a .067 IsoP doesn't hint that there's a ton to come. - the OBP looks decent although a chunk of that is due to an extraordinary number of HBPs; 22 this season against 32 walks, plus 14 & 5 in partial seasons prior to this year. Maybe that's just minor league wildness but that many (41 in 700+ PAs) points to him having some kind of "skill" at it. - 45 to 10 SB/CS ratio
  17. You can see that 406 mark about halfway along the LCF fence (a white spot in the ivy). Mazeroski's famous HR went over the fence right about there. He might have been a mediocre-hitting defensive whiz but that was no cheap poke. I think legend has it that no no-hitter was ever thrown at that park.
  18. Justin Maxwell career ABs w/bases loaded = 4 Career Grand Slams = 3
  19. Not sure which was worst: - Posada's PH HR in top 10 - Longoria's almost 2R HR in the bottom that would have won it (caught at the fence in straight-away CF) - Carl Crawford ending the game by being thrown out at 3rd after tagging on a fly to short RF Yanx back up by a half-game. Hughes & Shields today.
  20. Phils win -- Braves lose Phillies now with a 2-game lead.
  21. Yanx jump out to a 6-0 lead in TB ... only to cough up a 7-spot in the 5th. Now 7-7 heading for bottom 9 with last night's star Reid Brignac to lead off. David Robertson pitching. 3 of the Yanx' 4 losses over the last four games have come via walk-offs.
  22. Most interesting thing is the Friday start to the season and a mid-week finish. They talked about changing this for a few years now in order to revamp the post-season sked with a new start date. Good news: - NOT off on any of the major holidays like it seems we've been far too often in recent years. Host Pitt on Mem Day; at LAD July 4th (probably a night game knowing those SoCal sked tendencies); at Florida (or maybe Puerto Rico?) on Labor Day Not Good News: - FOUR day break for the ASG. Hate those Thursday off days.
  23. And the rout is on!! HRs from Beltran & Evans Bases-clearing 2Bs by Beltran (2 RBIs) & Pagan (3) Two eye-popping DP turns from the duo of Tejada & Reyes Only Wright & Davis failing to join the hit parade so far.
  24. But phrases like 'head-case' or 'can't handle New York' are so much easier to make and much more fun to throw around.
  25. Dick Schofield - "Ducky" Light hitting shortstop, switch hitter. Later became a Met (or was that his son? All those Schofields looked, fielded, and batted alike). It was Dick the son who played for the Mets in 1992. The grandson of the elder Dick - a son of young Dick's sister - is Jayson Werth who kind of breaks that whole look-alike/play-alike thing.
