  5. What is Jeff Francouer doing in the stadium and who is he broadcasting for cuz he isn't listed as part of any Philly teams? I knew he was no longer a regular on Braves TV (replaced by C J Nitkowski a year or so back) but I can find no info as to what he's doing now.
  6. Even giving away an out by less than stellar base running (x2), we've still notched a run each frame and made the starter throw four innings worth of pitches and made the Phils burn two mound visits.
  7. So it's pretty much official that Diaz is the worst reliever we've got in our pen at this point, no?
  8. Edwin Diaz, 15 yards for unnecessary excitement. Prior to that, I was checking out of town scores on mlb.com and saw 5-4 Mets (while it was 5-1 on my TV set) about 5 seconds before Stott's HR Kind of took the whole mystery about where the next pitch was headed.

  10. Uncle Steve should give the ump crew a bill for the cost of all the fireworks he just wasted on their blown call. Or he could, y'know, stop with the fireworks.
  11. This walking Trea Turner thing each time isn't a high percentage strategy.
  12. Other wacky Lindor 1st inning stat: 10-for-21 plus a walk, 3 doubles, 3 HRs. Now here's the bad news ... just four 1st inning runs scored. So he's driven himself in three of the four times (the other was on an Alonso HR) despite being on 1st base 5 times and 2nd base three times, all with no outs.
  13. Four HRs for Lindor this season: - Leading off the 1st (4/8) - Leading off the 9th (4/18) - Leading off the 1st (4/20) - Leading off the 1st (4/21) All of which clearly proves one thing: he can't hit with runners on base
  14. In other Sunday news: - the Marlins scored 1 in the 7th, 3 in the 8th, and 2 in the 10th to beat the Phils in their series finale. Never hurts to have an extra game cushion (+2) when starting a series against your nearest rival. - Reds thumped the Orioles 24 - 2 Reds scored 0 - 1 - 7 - 2 - 2 - 0 - 3 - 5 - 4 on 25 hits plus 11 walks ... ouch! Charlie Morton was the starter for Baltimore
  15. Arraez, being evaluated further in Houston Methodist Hospital, is “stable, conscious, responsive, and able to move his extremities.” according to a statement released by the Padres.
  16. SD's Luiz Arraez, the second batter of tonight's SNB game, bunted and ran HARD into Houston 2Bman Mauricio Dubon covering 1st and went down in a heap. It's been at least 10 minutes now and the medics are just now loading him onto a stretcher, complete with neck and back braces, and now on a very slowly moving cart for transport off the field and eventually out of the stadium.
  17. So I looked up the 1986 game vs StL that GKR were talking about, the one that completed the last four game sweep vs the Cards, because I wanted to see how well K & R's recollections held up. And, as with many player memories, they were right on a couple of things and wrong on a few others. There was a DP involving Backman (Keith) in the final game of that four game set April and, while you can't tell just from BB-Ref whether it was a defensive gem as Keith says, it was on Tito Landrum (Ronnie) though it was a 4-6-3 where Keith implied a liner. But the biggest boo-boo was that that play ended the 8th inning, not the game, with the Mets up 5-3. The interesting part to me comes in the top of the 9th: Straw led off with a double then went to 3rd on a G Foster single. Knight grounded out (runners hold) which brought up Lenny in the 8-slot. So the Cards IW'd him which led to the Mets letting Ojeda hit for himself!!! Mind you this is w/one out, bags loaded and a 2-run lead in the top of the 9th! Bobby grounded into a force play at home then Raffy Santana fouled out to end the frame. All ended well though with the bottom of the 9th going uneventfully via fly outs from Terry Pendleton, Mike Heath, and Clint Hurdle for a CG win for Bobby O: 3 ER (2 HRs) 9 H, 0 BB, 2 K. 2:15 game time. Different times indeed. Those games v StL came on the heels of sweeps v Philly (3) and Pitt (2) and were games 6 - 9 of what would become an 11 game winning streak, their longest of the season. And while I would have assumed, if asked, that those Mets didn't have any four games losing streaks that year, but they in fact had two including losing four straight to those same Cardinals. It wasn't an entire series, though, as those games were the middle four games of a six game series (Rain-out caused, no doubt) from 8/14 to 8/17. Mets won the first game of a Thursday DH but lost Game-2. They then lost single games on Friday & Saturday (both in extras), then dropped the opening game of a Sunday DH before ending the mini-losing streak by winning the nightcap. The other Quadruple L also involved StL but only for one game. It started with getting swept in that clinch-delaying three game September sweep in Philly which in turn was followed by a 1-0/13-inning loss in StL. Mets won the next night in StL before the clincher came at home vs CHI the day after that.
  18. Not until now when Gary mentioned where the term "walk off" comes from did I really even think about it , it's not for the hitter , Denis Eckersly coined the term for the pitcher having to walk off after giving up the hit, and now it makes perfect sense It was on the occasion of the famous HR by Kirk Gibson to win G1 of the 1988 WS. Eck referred to it as a 'walk-off' during post-game comments in the clubhouse. And since that all happened in L.A. during the '80s it wouldn't surprise me if Pat Riley copyrighted the phrase before Gibby was even finished circling the bases (which, admittedly, took a while) and has been earning money from it ever since.
  19. The one piece of 'decor' I remember from Rusty's on 73rd was a framed and sequenced set of all 23 seasons of Rusty baseball cards. The one sports celeb I recall seeing there from my handful of visits, aside from the patron himself, was NYG Harry Carson. He was a tough guy to miss or mistake for someone else in those days; very distinctive looking, very large, and very dark skinned.
  20. 73rd St (IIRC) He also had a second one in midtown for a short period. Then both closed. I remember him citing rising rent costs. Went to the UES one several times and the (fancier) midtown one once.
  21. Cool! I briefly tuned into the Yanx/TBR game prior to our tilt and quickly saw the Yanx turn 3-1 lead into a 6-1 lead in the top of the 4th. No point in following that one, I thought. Turns out the Rays countered with three of their own in bottom 4 but it stayed 6-4 until the 9th when the Yanx made it 8-4 ... so even if I had been following I would have stopped again. So imagine my surprise when I just now found that the Rays tied the game with four in the bottom of the 9th and then got the 'only in the Manfred-era' two-run leadoff HR in bottom 10th for the win! Double Happiness!! Braves currently tied early in their game vs the Twins so a TH condition still possible.

  23. I wanted to make sure this exchange didn't slide by unnoticed. Vientos out of game ... I'm seeing groin discomfort online Benjamin Grimm wrote: I don't want to know what kind of websites you're visiting
  24. That might be our infield's first accurate throw home of the season. Been a bunch of 'wrong side' throws up until now. Between that and the two straight two-out RBI hits a couple innings earlier, I wasn't sure which team I was watching.
  25. I don't recall Gary missing tonight's game being discussed during lThursday's telecast. If it were a planned/Passover kind of thing you think it would have been mentioned.
