  1. Yeah, I didn't mean heal completely, only that him sitting out game 1 was possibly due to the shoulder rather than a simple manager's decision. I don't think his arm ever completely recovered from that injury. In his original restaurant Rusty had a sequence of still photos from that catch against the wall. That and the 20+ consecutive baseball cards of him were the highlights of the decor.
  2. Staub was also injured during the LCS - maybe sitting out was partly an extra day to heal.
  3. I'd forgotten that Wayne Garrett was our leadoff hitter. Of course. He was the middle man in the 3 consecutive Game-3, leadoff HR streak - book-ended by Agee & Dykstra. Timo wrecked the streak in 2000
  4. Bumping this up to the top seeing as how it’s been dormant for several weeks now. Anyone who still wants to chime in with a list of their own, an update to an existing list, or just throw in some comments do so soon before we put this to bed. What we have so far is a fairly tight consensus emerging - especially as compared to last year’s where opinions were all over the place with top ten votes according to one not even making the cut for another. Here, so far anyway, the top 5 almost all got top 5 votes from everyone even if not always in the exact same order. Beyond that: - Pelfrey rates as high as 2nd place (GFaFiF) and as low as 10th (Edgy) - Reyes varies from 3rd place (Seawolf) to 10th (Vic Sage) - Niese goes from 7th (V. Sage & F. Knot) to 13th (Edgy) Biggest spreads so far are for: -Francoeur: as high as 9th place (TransMonk) and as low as 25th (VFC) - Rodriguez: 5th (Edgy) to 16th (GFaFiF) - Thole: 10th (VFC) to 21st (GFaFiF) - Dessens: 14th (F. Knot) to 27th (GFaFiF) - Tejada: 13th (GFaFiF) to 30th (VCF) - Parnell: 14th (LWFS) to 29th (Seawolf) - Acosta: 11th best (Edgy) to not mentioned (GFaFiF)

On a windy day during the WS Mays mis-judged a fly ball through the late afternoon sun and fell trying to re-adjust. That 'incident' almost immediately became a symbol for how Mays was no longer MAYS as if that hadn't occurred to everyone already and as if that moment was the reason he decided to call it quits even though his impending retirement had been announced months earlier. The bigger problem is that that one play has hung around as the icon for EVERY athlete who stayed too long to the point where it's cited by mediots who not only never saw it but never saw Mays in any form and now think he was stumbling around like a drunk on a routine basis for the entire final season.
  6. Ashie62 wrote: Jeter's request of 150 Million for 6 years is the least he is willing to take. Seeing as how no team is going to even approach that number, I somehow doubt it. Besides, the NYDN has him "lowering" his demands to 5 x $22-24 range citing sources to his agent dismissing the 6x$25 reports as "inaccurate". Joe Dimaggio didn't get a Yankee Icon deal, Reggie was let go and it looks like Jeter very well may have played his last game for the MFY's. Only if you see him taking the same or less to play elsewhere.
  7. For those thinking Boston might make a big play for Jetes: Marco Scutaro: .275/.333/.388 -- 695 PAs, 49 XBHs -- Age 34; Salary for 2011 = $5 mil, commitment for 2011 only plus 2012 club/player option for $6m/$3m w/$1.5m buyout Derek Jeter: .270/.340/.370 -- 739 PAs, 43 XBHs -- Age 36; Salary for 2011 = at least $15 mil (figuring they'd have to more than meet the NYY offer) with a commitment thru 2013 at the minimum But of course there is that jump throw thing to take into account. Jeter-ites can complain all they want about how the Yanx are being hard-asses here - although if the Yanx were REALLY interested in being hard-asses they'd tell him to go shop around the league all he wants but after one week their $15x3 offer becomes $10x2 plus a club option. And then a week after that it becomes $8x2 w/no option.
  8. My first thought on this thread was: 'Wait a minute, Cher's son in 'Mask' died before he ever had any kids so how can there be 'Son of Mask' ?!!?'
  9. Just make sure it's well stocked for the ride home. For all his faults - perceived or otherwise - let's not pretend that 27 y/o SS with speed, a glove, and at least decent power grow on trees and are so easily replaceable.
  10. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Edgy DC wrote: Garry Carter's 300th homer (drained the life out of that summer) It sure did. How long was he stuck on 299? I seem to remember it was something like five or six weeks. Looking it up ... WOW!! it was even worse than I remember. He only hit 11 that season (1988) but 7 were in April. #299 came on May 16 -- and #300 not until AUG 11 - and there doesn't appear to be a large injury gap where he wasn't playing in between. He hit #301 three days later, but then only one more after that for the rest of the season. The following season saw him get just 150 ABs and 2 HRs - his last as a Met He went on to hit 20 more across three seasons.
  11. The Lenny Harris PH record may have touched off its own record for greatest gap between over-the-top on-field celebration vs importance of the feat. I mean, I understand that Lenny was a fun-loving & popular guy with his teammates but it was hardly a reason for an empty-the-dugout, back-pounding moment. Compared to the Sheffield 500th, the Franco 400th, the Piazza catcher HR record, and the Lenny PH record, the Glavine 300th was probably more in proportion than to actual accomplishment than the Mets have 'hosted' and promoted in a long while.
  12. The whole concept of "not letting him walk" assumes a couple of things: 1 - that he's going to get a better offer elsewhere 2 - that the team won't come off their stance and top that offer 3 - and/or that Jeter will get so pissed off at his "treatment" that's he'll take a better, or even a comparable, offer and play elsewhere My take is: - #1 isn't going to happen. As already mentioned, $15mil until age 40 is already more than generous (maybe 2x more) and it's coming from the team that has both the most money and the most reasons to want him. - If #1 does happen (assuming it's not too ridiculous) the Yanx will swallow their pride and up the contract but at least for now their whole strategy is betting that, unless and until that happens, they'd merely be bidding against themselves. They're not numb to your charms Derek, they just don't see the need to pay for them if they don't have to. - and I don't think it'll come to #3 either. He has as many reasons to want the Yanx as they do to want him so, unless his Alex-hatred is so high at this point that he refuses to step on the same field knowing they're paying that bum until he's 83 years old but suddenly got fiscally smart (or at least closer to it) when his turn came around, it'll be his turn to swallow pride like it was an ice-cream soda. The media, as always, are simply rooting for the best story and the best story involves Jeter sticking around NYC.
  13. I think he's the 2nd best pitcher available after Lee

Once offered it binds the player to the team for the upcoming year. Those not offered - say, Maine, for instance - will become FAs even though still short of their 6 years ML time. This was not quite right. Last night was only the deadline for offering Arb to potential FAs - something which doesn't affect Pelfrey at al. The filing period for arbitration eligible cases involving non-FAs doesn't come around until January. In between now and then, teams simply need to offer a contract to any unsigned players by December 12 in order to retain their rights.

Ashie62 wrote: Greg Doyel of CBS trashes Jeter.. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/story/14342512/yankees-just-say-no-to-bailoutseeking-jeter Which would be fine if he weren't mis-using the hell out of those 'Similarity Scores' Alomar & Trammel might have had careers up to that point which were most similar to Jeter, but both had already started fading before they ever got to his current age and so their mid-30s seasons were most definitely NOT most similar. In his age 34 thru 36 seasons (the last three) Jeter put up .301/.364/.414 stats while averaging 633 ABs/yr At the same age Alomar was down to .262/.331/.367 while getting 426 ABs/yr and while Trammel was a decent .299/.333/.349 he was playing barely half the time with 265 ABs/yr Which isn't to say that Jeter isn't more likely to fade than surge - or that his larger point that the Yanx offer isn't already more than market value isn't valid - only that Jeter, unlike the other two, is just one year removed from a real good season and that those are the wrong guys to be comparing him to at this point.
  17. Don't want to have to go through this again
  18. Just a few minutes ago [Francesa] educated the new Mets manager by telling him which players that the Mets called up last season produced. In a way that genuinely seemed to me as if Francesa was giving Collins knowledge about things that Collins didn't know and would be grateful to learn! Nothing like having a talk-show host with no knowledge of the minor leagues whatsoever tell last season's minor league coordinator what the new talent is like.
  19. Today is the last day for [u:1ut315qc]clubs to offer[/u:1ut315qc] arbitration - pre-FA or not. There'll be another deadline* for players to decide whether they want to accept. So nothing is going to be decided on Pedro (et al) tonight, only that he's theirs *IF* he opts to accept and that they'll get a draft pick if he declines and signs elsewhere. * Midnight - Nov 30
  20. And it's not so much Pelfrey's choice as it is the club's. In those pre-FA cases offering arb is simply a statement of continued team interest which has to be declared by tonight. Once offered it binds the player to the team for the upcoming year. Those not offered - say, Maine, for instance - will become FAs even though still short of their 6 years ML time.
  21. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Pelf, Green, Dickey, Maine, Pagan. Obviously yes, definitely no, Yes, doubt it, Yes -- those are my guesses anyway. And, yeah, offering Arb doesn't mean you keep Pedro, only that he can accept that process which means a new one-year salary at a to-be determined rate - or that if he does skip out we net a draft choice probably in the 35-50 range.
  22. He liked the word "execution." So will the fans if he doesn't win.
  23. Terry: "I'm not an evil devil." Shades of Christine O'Donnell? That would have been a great opening: 'I'm not an evil devil ... I'm nothing like you've heard ... I'm you'
  24. Howard was actually 3rd amongst Phillies as both Halladay & Werth finished ahead of him in total points and were named on more ballots. Werth was named by more than twice as many voters (15 to 7) but had no votes higher than 5th.
  25. The voting pattern for Howard was definitely the weirdest. Only 7 voters out of 32 listed him in their top 10 at all - but those votes were all 7th place or higher including that one 2nd place vote as well as one 3rd, one 4th, and two each for 5th, 6th, & 7th.
