  1. 'Teardrop' was one hard-ass mutha-fucka ... but at the same time I don't know that his future is going to be all that long.
  2. I was just starting to write that Flood's case, coming as it did during the nascent days of the union, probably preceded at least some if not most of the arbitration features built into the basic agreement as a remedy to disputes. His was also a case where his argument was that baseball's basic set-up (players as property of a single club for life or until the club decided otherwise) was contrary to the laws of the U.S. as a whole. KRod - assuming this all happens and he goes on to lose in arbitration - would have a much tougher time convincing a court that a collectively bargained arbitration procedure somehow denied him due process. He, unlike Flood, would neither be denied a right to make a living nor be told there was only one place where he had to do so.
  3. Madden's not a reporter being paid to cover the Mets. He's a columnist paid to give out snarky nicknames and make pre-made connections based on ridiculously small sample sizes.
  4. Errors by Evans (throw) and Hu lead to 2 of the 3 runs given up being unearned. Scoreless & hitless & walkless innings from Carrasco (2), Acosta (1) & Alvarez (1). Only Misch got smacked around: 2 IP; 2 R (1 UE); 5 hits 11 NYM hits led by 2 each from Evans, Duda & Hairston
  5. Yeah, I remember Simmons as one of the earlier public figures to make public her mixed race background. When TV news first started to get away from being all white Ken & Barbie clones one of the first and favorite hiring targets was white-looking black chicks. As for her looking ever more whiter these days I suppose that's either the lighting of that particular photo or the result of getting too many chemical skin peel procedures to go along with the facelifts.

  7. At that rate he should go all nine
  8. Edgy DC wrote: Jonathan Weissman had a failed interview with him and hated the guy. Something else that speaks well of Jay.

  10. 15 Points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists per game.
  11. I would have bet that Angel was a hair faster than Reyes. Turns out to be wrong (at least today) but close.
  12. The NFL - without the blanket anti-trust exemption that MLB enjoys - has routinely lent money to team owners even to the point of keeping ones afloat run by borderline criminals, gamblers & drunks. I've said this before in other topics, but even though I agree that the anti-trust exemption is bad law, it's one that has been severely whittled down over the years and I think is too often used as a red herring to explain just about any perceived problem with the sport.
  13. I manage to conflate 'Singles' with 'Reality Bites' even having never seen either one of them.
  14. A good read
  15. Ceetar wrote: congrats on your clean sweep, but that night was hardly "perfect". It was just about the worst Oscar show ever. Seemed fine to me. But I dunno how to judge these things. Maybe I just don't expect much. This is pretty much where I'm at too. I only occasionally watch these things so when I do it's not like I'm expecting some boffo life-affirming show. And, let's face it, on the awards you actually (might) care about you generally know in advance who's winning at least 3/4 of them. In a bad year I guess 6 of the big 8 correctly and that's usually without seeing any of the movies. So I half pay attention while doing the crossword puzzle and if there's the occasional laugh, meaningful speech, or stunning cleavage it's OK with me. As for last night: Hathaway was fine. Franco looked/sounded detached. If they want to go back to a more 'big name' veteran hosts I'm fine with that but I'm not going to man any protest lines over it. Melissa Leo pretending she had nothing prepared (after winning every award for the last few months) then 'accidentally' dropping the F-Bomb was neither real nor funny. And Kirk can stay on stage as long as he wants for all I care.
  16. Not great news as, for the second year in a row, the top of the list* is populated by NL East-ers other than those destined for Queens, NY Last season's list was dominated by the likes of Jason Heyward, Mike Stanton, and Steven Strasberg while this year sees three NL-East-ers populate the top five. - #2 Bryce Harper is certainly no immediate threat. -The Phils' RF job, open on account of the Jayson Werth defection down I-95, should be Domonic Brown's job to lose. - Julio Teheran will likely make the Braves rotation either from opening day or soon thereafter - and Freddie Freeman played 1B in Atlanta late last season and would have to have a bomb of a spring to play his way out of the starting lineup Also, check out THREE Royals in the Top-10 and FIVE in the top 25! 1 - Mike Trout - OF, Angels 2 - Bryce Harper - OF, Nationals 3 - Domonic Brown - OF, Phillies 4 - Jesus Montero - C, Yankees 5 - Julio Teheran - RHP, Braves 6 - Jeremy Hellickson - RHP, Rays 7 - Eric Hosmer - 1B, Royals 8 - Aroldis Chapman - RHP, Reds 9 - Mike Moustakas - 3B, Royals 10 - Wil Myers - OF, Royals 11 - Dustin Ackley - 2B/OF, Mariners 12 - Shelby Miller - RHP, Cardinals 13 - Jameson Taillon - RHP, Pirates 14 - Matt Moore - LHP, Rays 15 - Kyle Drabek - RHP, Blue Jays 16 - Desmond Jennings - OF, Rays 17 - Michael Pineda - RHP, Mariners 18 - Zach Britton - LHP, Orioles 19 - Manny Machado - SS, Orioles 20 - Jacob Turner - RHP, Tigers 21 - Mike Montgomery - LHP, Royals 22 - Brandon Belt - 1B, Giants 23 - Freddie Freeman - 1B, Braves 24 - Martin Perez - LHP, Rangers 25 - John Lamb - LHP, Royals ... 53 - Jennry Mejia - RHP, Mets ... 69 - Wilmer Flores - SS, Mets * List calculated by combining 'Top-50' lists from Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, ESPN (Keith Law), and MLB.com (Jonathan Mayo)
  17. Talk about your hands-on ownership!!
  18. With all the 2Bmen and potential 2Bmen in front of him, I don't think we'll be seeing someone who has barely played above A+ ball in a ML uni this year.

  20. His list of screen credits include: 'Get Shorty', 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil', 'Royal Tannenbaums', 'Waterworld', 'Wyatt Earp', 'Mr. Baseball' and 'Unforgiven' Also, as a member of the one and only Seattle Pilots team, earned a handful of mentions in 'Ball Four'
  21. Actually 84 years old, not yet 85.
  22. Jaws as compared to JP = Worse fake critter but much better humans
  23. Somebody on the radio this morning pointed out that the Mets are holding Latin Appreciation/Jose Reyes Poster Night on August 6th ... one week After the trading deadline. That could get awkward.
  24. metirish wrote: Are people voting now looking back or voting what they felt at the time? I didn't like it much at the time and have probably seen only snippets of it since. I also never saw any of the sequels (for the most part I HATE sequels) so it's not like those are having any after-the-fact negative effect on my vote
  25. My vote = ** ... but only because I was feeling generous. Good special effects surrounded by cartoon characters.
