  1. Yeah, that's a more modest point but why bother to get Byrdak up if you're just going to let Boyer pitch to two LHBs? Plus it's not like BB was mowing them down without a hitch.
  2. Cashman: "In the first inning, the scoreboard was reading 912 miles an hour. Normally that stuff's out there. ... I think everyone realizes there's no advantages here. But there's a bulletin that says you're not supposed to do it. I think it's really silly personally." And, fortunately for us, when the scoreboard reading all haywire we just happened to have a guy pre-stationed in the exact right spot in the stands with his own gun plus a headset.
  3. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: This thread is a blur of mid-eighties cinema, innit? Had the game on mute late: does anyone have any clue why the right fielder-- Cousins?-- let the potential Wright foul out drop in the tenth? (The potential tag-up of Reyes/Pagan? If that's it... that kid deserves some Landshark, or Sol, or whatever.) If he catches that then Reyes takes 3rd easily with one out (and maybe Pagan takes 2nd and kills the potential GiDP). I've seen that before with a runner on 3rd that could win/tie the game but I don't think I've seen it only 1st & 2nd. If I'm on 'D' there I want the out - particularly with the other team's best hitter up there. But at least that one is a split decision call by a player. But how about Collins bunting Pagan to get Reyes over?!?!? Really Terry? And he kept in on after 2-0 count and still on 2-1. That it worked thanks to a wide throw doesn't make it a good play IMO. That Reyes can get there on his own and base stealers were 10-fer-10 against that pitcher last season makes it even worse. Really Terry?!?!?
  4. Although, the Mets did offer him arbitration. Sure, but that's a safer route (only one year) and was mainly designed so as to eek a draft pick out of what was likely to be a declined offer. Once he got on the open market there was little interest. What this rant is about is the usual: "we're the Yanquis and we don't make mistakes" bullshit - and so if signings go bad it must be someone else's fault. - Kei Igawa "wasn't the same pitcher we saw in Japan" - Carl Pavano was a good pitcher but we couldn't know in advance that he couldn't handle NYC - we were shocked, SHOCKED that [insert Cuban player here] was older than we thought (so was El Duque but that worked out well so it was a brilliant signing)
  5. When asked at various times this past winter whether it was hard to take a pass on re-signing Pedro Feliciano, Sandy Alderson always gave a quick and direct "not at all".

GM Brian Cashman explains he was relaying pitch speeds only, as scoreboard "gun" was out. ----------------------------- Sure. That's why Keith said he saw the guy there last year. It's a shame that a big fancy new place as new MFYS has such an unreliable scoreboard. Remember Brian, it's not so much the crime as it is the cover-up. Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel had better explanations for his fuck-ups than this one.
  7. I had no idea this was illegal as at least one version of this story have been openly written about prior to this. Specifically one where none other than De-rek Jeet-ah has his own radar guy in the stands because Captain Clutch apparently needs to know the speed of the pitcher's fastball before heading to the plate without having to rely on the unpredictability of stadium guns. Gun man (maybe he's the second shooter) checks his readings during warmups (since DJ often led off) and openly used finger signals to relay the speed. Thumbs up followed by a 5, for instance, meant 95 mph; thumbs down coupled with a 2 indicates 88. I can't remember now where I read the story but I'm sure it was one of the major local dailies and was written without any cloak and dagger sense about it. Gun man was certainly named and the whole thing was portrayed merely as another in the lengthy list of 'look how far this guy will go to excel' articles.
  8. metirish wrote: From a tweet last night .....the Mets have allowed 17 grand slams since they last hit one on 08/01/09 , Pagan hit it. That was the answer I was after as I knew it had to be at least 14. Probably only Elias can find the answer to what the ML "record" actually is for this rather arcane pice of trivia - but at this point we might as well go for 20.
  9. 2011 season to date: 1 game; 1 GS situation; 1 GS served up so far Add that to the full dozen the staff served up last season while the bats were remarkably contributing none. Then go back to the final GS of the 2009 season which also went to the opposition as Justin Maxwell hit a walk-off GS off Frankie Rod in the final road game of the year. So that's a streak of [u:15yi3mxu]at least[/u:15yi3mxu] 14 straight slams that have gone against the Mets. They did manage to hit 4 in 2009 (against 5 served up) so it's probably not much longer than that but I didn't have an easy way of digging up when the last NYM GS was.
  10. * I was against PH-ing for Thole (and said so at the time) mainly because I was hoping Terry wasn't going to go pure L/R and put up Nickeas (now THAT would have been a Jerry move). At least by going with Hairston it became a better move than the one I feared although I still wouldn't have done it. Dunn, the reliever the Marlins brought in, is NOT their LOOGY specialist (Randy Choate is) and it's not like Thole is incompetent vs LHPs anyway. What he was opting for was the shot at getting all three runs at once but I liked the chances with the bat-on-the-ball guy and go for another run there and keep things moving. Hairston could have then hit for the pitcher either if/when Thole go on or leading off the next inning. * Yeah, Duda was misplaced where he was used. * I had no problem with either of Harris's dashes. The one going to second you HAVE to make but he did so easily and the one to 3rd (particularly w/just one out) was a no-brainer. And, yes, Coughlin is known to have a lousy arm and is still learning CF. * No problem with Beato for a 2nd inning. Relievers are going to break is asked to get more than 3 outs. Also didn't realize how big he is ... 6' 6" or so.
  11. One more hit and we've got ourselves a ballgame here. Gotta leave Thole in even though I'm sure they're bringing in a LHP Might as well pinch-run Hu for Emaus because you'll probably want to bring him in anyway for 'D' - or maybe you PH him for the pitcher's slot and then change 'em up.
  12. Just keep the conga line moving. The seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" put up 10 this afternoon after falling behind a mere 14-0. Of course they lost anyway but we're not down by 14.
  13. Whew!! I was about to change my first hit of the season vote to Reese Havens if this went on any longer.
  14. 899 - Pedro Beato
  15. 896 - Willie Harris 897 - Brad Emaus 898 - Blaine Boyer
  16. Is it too late to guess 'No one' in the first NYM hit of the year contest?
  17. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" down 11-0 in the 4th inning of their home opener. Carlos Quentin with 5 RBI already. That's gotta make Clevelanders feel just great. edit: Now 14-zip. Sox w/ 15 hits in 4 innings! ChiSox have been a sexy pick for the AL Central this year. I haven't paid enough attention yet.
  18. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Brandon Lyon: 4.05 career ERA, 1.36 career WHIP, 5.9 career K/9. But ZOMG he's got closer experience! And of course no one even warming up in the pen. The game was Lyon's to win or BLOW Didn't help the the earlier two runs (in the 7th) were helped along by a Houston passed ball. Can't be giving away runs like that, particularly when you (Houston) suck and the team you're playing doesn't.
  19. And Mayberry smacks one over the drawn-in OF and the Phillies win.
  20. Brandon Lyon gives up hits to 5 of the first 6 batters he faces. Tied up, bags loaded, 1 out, John Mayberry Jr up

  22. Matt Holliday - appendectomy, out indefinitely Well that's sure sucky timing

  24. Pujols = oh-fer-five w/3 GiDPs in a 10-inning Cardinal loss Clearly the pressure of the new contract is getting to him and stuff like this is proof he'll never be able to handle NYC so I don't even want him anymore if he becomes a FA this winter.
