  1. [youtube:173n4sns]Qr5djzzeA3M[/youtube:173n4sns] Oh hell, and one more for good measure. I don't think I ever heard this version ... but it's David Ruffin so how bad could it be. [youtube:173n4sns]EZTbJSmOWWc&feature=fvwrel[/youtube:173n4sns]
  2. And the pre-game 'wild and free' look.
  3. Forget about throw-back uniform night, we got us some retro hair going on as Coco Crisp rocks the afro. He's been keeping it in braids so long that I don't think anyone realized it had gotten ... well, so long.

Edgy DC wrote: You know, it's hateful and selfish and shameful of me for this to have crossed my mind, but this injury may allow Pedro to maintain his Mets-and-only-Mets stateside resume, despite having now been property of five different organizations. Except that he inked a two-year deal w/the Yanx. Not that that means he'll ever pitch for them next year ... only that they have to pay him for it.
  5. Yeah I don't get #4 either. You want to swap Evans for Hairston? OK, fine, probably a wash, maybe a slight improvement. But, assuming he doesn't contract the mumps in the next two weeks and be out for another 1/4 season, Bay is going to be an everyday player and so is Pagan and (mostly) Beltran. Why bring up Fernando (who is ONCE AGAIN on the shelf - at least temporarily anyway) so he can sit on the bench and PH instead of whoever remains from the Hairston/Harris duo plus spot start once/twice a week?
  6. Centerfield wrote: metirish wrote: On the problems scale regarding this team K-Rod is way down there for me . Fucking dismal. Really? It's at the top of mine. As of now, they suck in 2011. K-Rod can go a long way to making them suck in 2012. The option may be an abomination but KRod IS well down the list of the reasons why the team is sucking right now.
  7. Or, as Lupica points out today: ... did Cashman tackle Scott Proctor in the old days when Joe Torre was running him out there every day? Cashman said today that he tried to get Torre to stop and actually talked to Proctor about it. The guy has totally lost his filter in public. I forget if Cashman's deal is up at the end of this year or not. If it is these unfiltered moments (Soriano wasn't MY idea) may be signs of him either plotting his exit or getting ready to hand the Steinbrenner boys the 'full autonomy' speech if they want him to stay.
  8. The beginning of the season in miniature, hopefully not as a cast-in-stone trend. -Tulowitski HR Hey, why not, we gave up a homer to him every other game and usually hits in between those round-trippers. At least there was no one on this time. - Wiggy flies out - Bloop hit in front of Hairston. Should it have been caught? ... Probably not. Could it have been caught? ... Possibly. Was it caught ... not even close. - Bloop hit in front of Beltran. Should it have been caught ... Probably. Could it have been caught? ... most definitely. Was it caught ... again, not even close. Which leads us to the question as to how many fly balls have fallen in our OF so far ... Answer: ALL OF THEM! - Walk to the #8 hitter which loads the bases Gee, what a fuckin' shock! ... but at least the pitcher is coming up, right? - Pitcher hits a perfect GiDP ball ... but the DP isn't turned. No error on the play of course, but once again there's a play that could have been made but wasn't and the inning should be over. I think three potential GiDPs today weren't turned. - Sharp single to LF. The only hard-hit ball since the lead-off HR drives in the 2nd and 3rd runs of the inning and blows another lead, this one by a guy who never should have come to the plate. ** Pitching Change ** - Passed ball. Not a huge deal but how many of those have we had so far? Even factoring in the Dickey factor there seem to have been a ton. - 3R HR by a slap-hitting scrub. Bad relieving AND inherited runners scoring. What more can one ask for? - Ground out Way to shut that barn door after the horse is about half way across the country. The only thing that made this inning unusual is that the Mets hadn't just scored in the previous half so these weren't give-back runs - not directly anyway.

  11. Guilty on the one count, hung jury on the other three. I have no idea where the gummint goes from here.
  12. And how many ballplayers had a whole opera written about them?
  13. Jose has also had more than his share of infield hits so far; some were intentional (bunts) but others more "lucky" in nature. Not necessarily a problem, but at the same time not always sustainable. The two triples he hit the other day were the best sign IMO; smacked 'em both and either were HRs in most other stadiums (and would count for two HRs each if hit in YSIII).
  14. Yeah, there are probably pain killers that couldn't/shouldn't be used when dealing with a drug addict. My reading of this is that Bobby also is referencing the idleness of down-time due to the injury being a potentially bad situation for Hamilton. It was this exact kind of exile from day to day playing that first led him down that road.
  15. The thing about Campbell is that he was actually a talented guy. Good singer, real good guitar player, and a knack - at least early in his career when he hooked up with Jimmy Webb - for picking good songs. I think his biggest problem is that he came along at the exact wrong time; clean-cut country boys were definitely on the outs in the late '60s leaving him without a market and marginalized by the 'hip-ness' police (even Webb was somewhat cast aside at this point also as I guess abstract lyrical metaphors were only OK if written while on wild drug trips). So getting into acting probably seemed like a good fit for him (like it did for John Denver later on) and probably looked like a good idea to the movie studio too -- 'Hey, we need to cast a decent-looking southern boy who isn't so big that he'll be a threat to the aging Duke for a movie which takes place in the Arkansas/Texas/Oklahoma area (Campbell is from Arkansas) ... how 'bout that singer with that cute smile I've seen on TV variety specials?!' Later on, caught between not really being an actor and still having little market for his core music he tried to capitalize (and again foreshadowing Denver) on that 'golly gee-whiz' image and started making some really bad choices of songs -- see: Cowboy, Rhinestone
  16. "They have to do a better job at developing players" ... which is why I'm advocating that Harvey jump from A-ball to the majors in one year.

Vic Sage wrote: metirish wrote: Not being a prick here but I heard Bridges say on the radio yesterday that they made a movie from the book and didn't remake Wayne's movie, apparently that was a big distinction for Bridges and the Coen's. yes, i remember hearing them say that, too. but the book is utterly unknown to me (and, i think, is relatively obscure to most) and the film is quite familiar to me. If there was a radical difference in the narrative or characters, i would've necessarily have called it a remake of the book, to point out the differences in the films. but i found the movies quite similar... in narrative, if not in tone and quality. Yeah, this. I too was led to believe that there were going to be greater differences in the story-line but, aside from chopping off the somewhat hokey intro from the old version and adding a wrap-up scene onto the end, there was virtually none at all. The update is a bit grittier, a bit less cartoonish, and I'm going to go out on a limb here and pronounce Matt Damon to be better at portraying a gun-toting Texas Ranger than Glen Campbell.
  18. If he's on the opening day roster in 2013 I'd say things are going well - so it's possible we could see him at CF in late 2012. Starting the season at high-A he could be in AA before this season is out and spend next between AA & AAA. IIRC he did NOT sign a major league deal so there's no reason to bring him up before he's really ready.
  19. Baseball America put out a list of their top-30 prospects for the Mets and where each is starting the season. Some (Hi Lucas Duda) may already be having their mail forwarded to a new location. I knew a guy who played with Helton in Asheville. The remark that stuck with me was that Helton struggled to get the ball out of the infield there. Well, yeah, but that was because they built the stadium in Asheville with 500-foot baselines. The stadium in Asheville is actually known as a real good hitters park. Checking the records -- Helton was only there for just a half-season (his first in pro ball) and indeed didn't do a lot of slugging. He had 13 of his 51 hits go for extra-bases with only 1 HR. But the org must have liked something in what they saw because within a year he had skipped over high-A ball (Asheville is low-A) and advanced through AA into AAA. By the end of the season after that he was in Denver.
  23. Apparently the BoSox can only beat the Yanquis. Prior to last night the Rays had scored: 1, 1, 1, 3, 1, 1, 9, 2, and 1 runs in their games (talk about your Noffense) ... but rack 'em up against Dice-K and they went for 16 Other assorted stuff from last night: - Your first-place ALC [u:1qlujck6]Cleveland Indians[/u:1qlujck6] won their 8th straight. That's one against the ChiSox, three straight v Boston, three more in Seattle, and then a shut-out last night in Anaheim. Maybe they can keep this roll going long enough to get back home and start drawing some crowds over 10,000 - And speaking of streaks, Seattle had lost 7 straight and were down 7-0 in the 7th at home last night v the Blue Jays ... they won 8-7 as Toronto pulled their starter after 5 innings then burned through six relievers trying to cap the game. A two-out, two-run single by the immortal Luis Rodriguez won the game. - Cards beat the D'Backs but Prince Albert goes 1-5 with a GiDP and is now 6-40 on the season (.150) with just one XBH - The Rangers started something named Alexi Ogando up against Justin Verlander and the Tiggers came out with a 2-0 win, their 9th in 10 games. - Dodgers won in San Fran amid stepped-up security. As far as I know there were no near-fatal beatings.
  24. I always found: Melanie Griffith = Actress to be a big enough stretch.
  25. If NYM relievers could: a) throw their pitches over the plate and throw fielded balls TO the plate we'd have won this game. Parnell's error attempting to throw home and Iggy botching the DP with a wide throw home were killers.
