  1. [u:n6iolc5r]GAME 2[/u:n6iolc5r] -- Lee gives up a lead-off triple to Furcal but then gets out of it untainted (K, Pop-out [Albert], and GO) Now, in the bottom of the 1st, Carpenter on short rest is getting his butt kicked. Three runs in and they're not finished yet.
  2. And speaking of bad (or at least quirky depending on your POV) radio announcers, huge article on John Sterling in today's NYTimes sports section.
  3. Who among us didn't have a sinking feeling when Avila slipped on that on-deck circle giving the Skanks another chance? Oh, you didn't you say? ... fucking liar!!
  4. MFS is thinking of KTE games (he did the Cincy series where we had the 4-game sweep) but the stats are counting who started which IGT
  5. 4-0 bottom 7 although the no-hitter is gone on a Cano broken bat bloop (there may be left-fielders slower than Delmon Young but you'd have to do a pretty thorough search before you found one). Perhaps the best part was - right after the usual booth talk about Jeter being clutch and all in October - he grounds out with two-on to end the inning then starts the next one with a throwing error which led to the 3rd & 4th run. Scherzer still throwing.
  6. [u:2vus2m36]GAME 2[/u:2vus2m36] -- The amazing run of bad calls from the extra line umps continues. This time it's the 2nd batter of the game and the LF ump calls a fair ball foul negating an Aaron Hill double (he later singled). It seems like virtually every one of the relatively few calls these extra umps have been called on to make over the years wind up either being corrected or need to be but aren't. Maybe it's the 'too many chefs' theory.
  7. Instead of focusing the story on just Bartman, the film linked him with not just Bucknor, but also Durham, and the Ruth sale, and black-cats, and billy-goats, and every other quasi-related topic that could possibly by construed as a "curse" on the two franchises.
  8. It varies. There was one BA race years ago (although I've forgotten the specific participants by now) where the leader sat out his game only to see the guy in 2nd get a couple of quick hits in his and take over the lead. This prompted a rushed PH appearance by the by-now former leader but an out put him even further behind and he wound up losing the title. btw, I picked up this 'TransMonk' quote from the IGT of that game: "Francesa says he's now rooting for Braun" I wonder if Francesa was rooting for Mo Vaughn back in '98 when his beloved 'Bernie Baseball' left after 2 ABs and 2 hits in the final game of his season once his (one and only) BA title was in hand. Vaughn went 2-for-4 that day but lost by 2 points.
  9. This Fister guy looked good for a while (Fister? I hardly even know her!) but as soon as Russell Martin hit the typical one-out/two-on Yanqui dribbler that's too slow & shitty to be turned into a DP (so now it's 2nd & 3rd instead of out of the inning) I got a bad feeling. Fister then had the next three hitters 0-2 but failed to get any of them out even though none hit the ball particularly well (2RBI single, single, walk). Then came the almost predictable Grand Slam. Could have been no runs that inning, instead it was six. So now not only are the Yanx up 1 game to none but they did so by winning the game which Verlander started without having to actually face Verlander.
  10. ... as opposed to Reyes, who won it by bribing the official scorer to give him fake points? Did most of his hits come 'off' the field? ha. Yes that's it. That's clearly what I meant.
  11. bmfc1 wrote: Are any of those 7 still rooting for the MFPs? http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/35666/rollins-disses-reyes Why, because Rollins is pretty much saying what half this forum said even earlier, that the better way to win a batting title is to do so on the field? Well Lohse certainly came apart in a hurry, huh? And now Rep-eyechart-sky throws a bunch of fat on the fire.
  12. GAME 1: The Cards -- 16-5 down the stretch (even including a certain four-run blown 9th inning lead) and without Carpenter for the first few games after they needed him for game #162 -- throw Kyle Lohse (14-8, 3.39) up against the tan, rested, and ready Roy Halladay.
  13. Definitely more than a few glass-bowls there, especially that one guy who came down to harass Bartman and eventually got tossed out of the stadium for his troubles. I like how he admitted to the cameras that, yeah, he had been tossed out of Wrigley "two or three times" prior to that, saying it with an attitude that implied only a small handful of stadium ejections was pretty much par for the course (and even that's assuming he wasn't under-selling it and was already into double-digits by that point).
  14. For all the talk about the Brewers' offense, that's a pretty top-heavy lineup they've got there. One thru five is a nice start with Corey Hart followed by Crazy Nyjer Morgan, then Braun, Fielder & the now healthy-ish Weeks, but that's followed by: 6th - Jr-Hairston-Jr subbing for the off-year by Casey McGehee. Decent player to have around but you don't think of him as a #6 guy on a playoff team 7th - Yunesky Betancourt and his [u:y3kvqsis].271 OBA[/u:y3kvqsis]. Bet they'd love JJ Hardy* back now that he seems to have resurrected himself in Bal'mer 8th - Jonathan LuCroy (decent stats for a catcher) and then the pitcher 9th although, in this case, Gallardo can hit a bit. In fact, in this lineup #s 8 & 9 might be better than 6 & 7 * Dealt away two years back for Carlos Gomez
  15. Congrats MGIM. You can see his real name in the credits under (I think) "Photographs and Stills." It's a good movie that would have been better if it didn't incorporate so much about Buckner and '86. Don't get me wrong: I'm always ready to see replays from '86 but I thought that the point of the movie was Bartman. The Director made it into an examination of scapegoating in baseball and related Buckner to Bartman. I think that the movie would have been better if it started after the first twenty minutes and ended ten minutes earlier. Me version DID end ten minutes early thanks to whatever running before it going overtime and therefore cutting off the end on my DVR but it doesn't sound like I missed much. The director made it clear from the beginning that he was a Red Sox fan growing up which I believe makes him genetically obligated to relate all things to the Sawx. Note also that he satisfied the contractually mandated clause that requires Denis Leary quotes to be inserted into any Sox-related film.

  18. And here come da rains.
  19. Yo Tigers, could you at least make them get the ball out of the fucking infield in order to score their runs?
  20. Gwreck wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: Is Wilson the guy who tweeted about Jose Reyes? And is he also a free agent to be? Yes and Yes. Wilson is the best available free-agent pitcher on the market this offseason. (Unless Sabathia opts out of his Yankees contract and becomes a FA). Yeah I guess he is. The list I looked at which showed him as a FA in 2012 but they meant that as free at the end of the 2011 season Meanwhile, it's 8-0 Tampa mostly on the strength of HRs by Damon (2R), Shoppach (2R), and Shoppach (3R) Wilson got tagged for all 8 runs (6 earned) over 5 innings while the rookie is tossing a 2-hit shutout.
  21. Sox now confirm that Francona is out as Boston mgr after 7 seasons. Helluva run while it lasted.
  22. Yes, I think so. No, not until after 2012 anyway.
  23. Rays make the surprising move (partly due to their desperate run at the end) to go with promising rookie Matt Moore in game 1. The 22 y/o lefty made his ML debut just two weeks ago and has appeared in 3 ML games to with 1 start and a total of 9.1 innings under his big league belt. C. J. Wilson [16-7; 2.94; 1.187 in 34 starts] goes for the Rangers The soon-to-be 31 y/o LHP is now 31-15 since being moved from the pen at the beginning of last year (a cautionary tale about pigeon-holing guys into roles too early) and started 4 games [1-2; 3.70] in last year's post-season alone. 5:07 EDT first pitch

  25. Crawford's been a GG-quality LFer who somehow managed to look like shit defensively down the stretch, costing them at least two games including that final one. Normally you don't think of defense as something that slumps in the way hitting does but it's tough to explain this year for him in any capacity.
