  1. * Paul Konerko now has over 400 career HRs. I wouldn't have known that. I wouldn't have known he was still active. Umm, yeah, I'm still active bitches -- currently to the tune of 163 ABs; 65 HIts; 24 XBHs; 11 HRs; .399/.476/.681; 211 OPS+ [bold = leads majors] And this is all coming off a year where he went: .300/.388/.517 w/31 HRs Gary brought him up during yesterday's telecast, initially just to point out that David was no longer leading the majors in BA, but then went on to add that you'd probably be hard pressed to find a more under-the-radar star, especially one who has spent virtually his entire career on one team and in a major market at that. Oringinally drafted in the 1st round by the Dodgers in 1994, they dealt him away four years later after parts of two ML seasons and 166 PAs along with reliever Denys Reyes to Cincy for reliever Jeff Shaw. Cincy, in turn, was so pleased with this heist that they gave him 73 PAs before sending him to the ChiSox four months later for Mike Cameron. Now in his 14th season as a south-sider averaging over 600 PAs/yr (8K+ total with <1,000 as DH) his HR yesterday was his 407th overall and 400th for the Sox. Has been a FA twice (2005 + 2010) and re-upped with the ChiSox both times. Is signed through 2013 when he'll be 37

I went to a party today and two Nationals season ticket holders were there and one said to me "are the Mets still in the league?" Nationals fans are getting cocky very quickly. Pulling for the Braves tonight. You're obviously making this story up. The Nationals don't have two season ticket holders. He was obviously hanging with George Will & Charles Krauthammer
  5. They're not calling it a "set-back" for Ruben but apparently his progress isn't what they were hoping for and his rehab stint has been delayed.
  6. Yeah, if you're going to associate with Nats fans then that's just extra reason to pull for the Braves. I have a cousin living in Herdon, VA with a partial season plan to Natsland but I don't have to deal with him on a regular basis, plus he's not the obnoxious type anyway. Nats just tied things at 2 in the 4th.
  7. Gary & Keith were honored by their inclusion on that banner but were a shade leery of the name 'Flushmore'.
  8. In the meantime it was a good day all around: gained a game on the Phillies, gained a game on the Marlins, and will gain a game the loser of tonight's Nats/Braves tilt (while obviously staying even with the winner). Probably should be pulling for the Braves at least for this one seeing as how the Nats have won the first two in that series. Gio Gonzalez v Brandon Beachy
  9. Either of those guys would be quite a pair for the NL at the ASG You'd have one guy, Beachy, who wasn't drafted at all, and the other who, almost immediately after being picked, was essentially UN-drafted when his bonus offer was cut by 90%
  10. Gotta like those 8-pitch, no-muss/no-fuss saves.
  11. Seeing as how this game has been in my mental-win column for about an hour and a half already, I would be in a serious bad mood for the remainder of the day if they let this one get away.
  12. And make sure to give Nickeas a nip or two of suds for that throw out at 3rd. Totally dumb move by Guzman, but that doesn't change the fact that he's in there on anything other than an absolutely perfect peg.

  14. Volquez mostly getting away with things so far but has had to throw essentially five innings worth of pitches over three innings to do it. We'll get to either him or his replacement(s) before long at this rate. Big game this one. Given the weakness of our last two opponents and the relative toughness of the upcoming sked, 5-2 over these seven games will look a helluva lot better in retrospect than will 4-3
  15. Disney to the core. Didn't even win the single crown in my book.
  16. Six straight losses for the Braves (four to Cincy plus two and counting to Washington) and now Chipper's back on the DL.
  17. Yeah, the shocking 3-HR (and EIGHT RBI via HRs!!) day today knocks the possibility of this month being amongst the NYM all-time low, well, right out of the park. Short of a HR embargo through the end of the month occurring during multiple looooong extra-inning games, this year is NOT coming back to the pack. April 1980 HR/PA = 0.49% May 1980 HR/PA = 0.51% Sept 1980 HR/PA = 0.57% Sept 2003 HR/PA = 0.63% April 1964 HR/PA = 0.67% Aug 1978 HR/PA = 0.83% May 1973 HR/PA = 0.95% Sept 1966 HR/PA = 1.01% Aug 1994 HR/PA = 1.11% June 1981 HR/PA = 1.20% May 2012 HR/PA = 1.34% (12 HRs in 898 PAs) year month hrs [crossout]1964 04 3[/crossout] [crossout]1980 04 3[/crossout] [crossout]1994 08 4[/crossout] [crossout]1981 06 4[/crossout] [crossout]1980 05 5[/crossout] [crossout]2003 09 6[/crossout] [crossout]1980 09 6[/crossout] 1977 09 7 2012 05 7 1976 08 7 1975 06 7 1995 04 7 1972 07 8 1981 04 8 [crossout]1978 08 8[/crossout] 1966 04 8 1964 09 8 1967 08 8 1972 04 8 1971 04 9 1979 04 9 [crossout]1973 05 9[/crossout] 1967 04 9 1973 04 9 [crossout]1966 09 9[/crossout]
  18. Thayer is only good in save situations. Black is clearly mis-using him.
  19. A Slammer AND a 3R HR in the same game?!?!?! I wasn't sure that was even permitted with this bunch!
  20. I'd just put Ike at 1st and slide Rottino out to LF. No need to make wholesale changes for sake of your best defensive lineup - particularly because Nickeas is about to bust this thing open. And, yes, Santana pitches.
  21. There's my Davis double -- my prediction was right, only about 18 hours too early. On the other hand, Ike has swung at each of the last four pitches he's seen. Maybe that's a good thing, I dunno.
  22. Stacking the lineup with righties pays off early. Now we just need Johan to NOT give up another four run lead and we'll be OK.
  23. Knocking off one of those from the high end of the list, September 1966 featured a whooping total of NINE HRs but that's exactly what you come to expect when your line-up is packing sluggers like Al Luplow and Ken Boyer. As such this month stays clear of the low-end of our building wimpy data-base. HRPAABHR/PAHR/ABSluggers98828161.01%1.10%Jones, Kranepool; Hiller; Luplow x 3; Boyer x 2; Goossen Meanwhile back in 2012, our torrid two HRs in two days streak has upped the current HR pace to near non-putrid levels.
