  1. Like I said, winning teams almost always have one of those - it's part of why they become winning teams. But, yeah, that doesn't change the fact that I could go on and on (as could most of us here) about the MFYs getting out-of-nowhere contributions exactly when they needed it from guys who were never as good either before or after but I try to avoid it because it sounds too much like sour grapes even though I'm convinced they got more of it than anyone. Gooden having his only good stretch as a Yanqui match up almost perfectly with Cone's absence when he had his aneurysm surgery is just one example.
  2. Joyce has had at least five different 'Bang-Bang' calls at 1st today and the Espinosa one (which was quite close and discernible only after slo-mo replay) appears to be the only one he missed. Implying, as AP/ESPN does by first running that piece and then linking it to the Galaraga play and the blown IFR call from last week, that this is part of a larger pattern is both a cheap shot at Joyce and is pretending to see a trend where none exists.
  3. Nats keep getting chances to get back into it, but also keep leaving runners all over the place. They've had at least three different two-out/two-on ABs but are oh-fer in all of them. 5-0 Cards top of 7
  4. I mentioned in another thread that Berman & Sutcliffe (even apart) are my two least favorite announcers working today. I dread just thinking of them working together. Sutcliffe's problem is that he reminds me of a football announcer in that he thinks every single play/pitch/call/decision needs to be analyzed to within an inch of its life. Berman's problem is that he reminds me too much of Chris Berman. The Reds have named Mike Leake to start Game 4 later today (trying to steal a win maybe?) a move that's significant because Leake wasn't on the roster to start the series. They've made room for him by removing Johnny Cueto, a move that requires Cueto not only to sit out the remainder of this round but also the next one should the Reds stay alive. Cueto would be eligible again for a potential Cincy WS roster.
  5. [u:31ph9ga5]GAME 3[/u:31ph9ga5] Chris Carpenter vs Edwin Jackson Cards get 6 hits from their first spin around the line-up and lead 4-0 after 1-1/2 3R HR from Pete Kozma is the big blow. Kozma is one of those guys that seem to almost always pop up on winning teams. Hitting .214 and then .233 with no particular power during two seasons of AAA ball, he was called up on Aug 31 to replace the injured Rafael Furcal and hit .333/.383/.569 in the majors. The '93 Phils had the same thing with Kevin Stocker. He was never as good in the minors, or even for the rest of his majors career, as he was for that 2nd half of the '93 season.
  6. Each team only has a limited number of slots to send to the AFL - and even that is pumped up a bit by the 'taxi squad' rule where some players are strictly part-timers. And while this league is not designated as a specific "level", I believe there is a trend towards capping the amount of minor league experience that a player can have - so someone like Flores might already be out of the target range.
  7. [u:13h5367v]Game 2[/u:13h5367v] We actually have a game here in danger of coming in at under 3 hours. 2-0 Oakland bottom 7 Good pitching and defense all around so far. Tiger starter Anibal Sanchez just now getting yanked w/2 out in the 7th.
  8. That's 2 errors for Rolen in this series so far. Who does he think he is, Jeter?!?
  9. attgig wrote: ex met gives the giants the lead... and, no, not Angel... it's Joaqun rias Arias was part of the ARod to the Yanx trade ... only Arias turns out to be the one who doesn't strike-out with the go-ahead run in scoring position during the playoffs.
  10. If Hunter Pence is moving awkwardly from a cramp or muscle pull, how could you tell? Dude looks awkward doing everything!
  11. R. Darling after a fly ball dies at the GAB warning track: "I don't recognize this stadium in the colder weather"
  12. Yes, I believe you're correct, it's just not completely universal subject to individual negotiations. That was part of the problem in the NFL lockout. With most (if not all) of their players being on in-season only pay plans and with most of them also not exactly living, let's put it kindly here, save-it-for-rainy-day life-styles, the owners were able to (correctly) bet on the fact that the players were much more likely to cave the minute those anticipated paychecks (the first ones in six months) began to be missed or even delayed.

  15. I was half joking when I made reference during that last inning to the opponents losing and their fans blaming it all on ARod as a result being the best of all outcomes, but my brief listen to Steve Somers after the game found him doing a monolog on just that. Why is the "Lightening Rod" still hitting 3rd?, etc. Of course the Schmoozer is good at doing stuff like that in order to ensure he'll have callers lining-up to chime in as soon as he returns from the first commercial break, but I have no doubt that would have been the most popular topic anyway.
  16. That sounds like it may have been a too-late-for-this-edition problem due to the later start plus the rain delay. Because, while the Post doesn't cover the Orioles beat anymore, its not like they go out of the way to ignore them in some sort of break-up with your ex rivalry, and they generally at least run wire service reports or occasionally scoop up (hopefully after paying for it) an article from the Baltimore Sun.
  17. I know it's only game two but I like it
  18. This could be the best of all worlds: the Orioles hold on and Yanx fans all blame ARod for making the last out
  19. Johnson's pitch count is under control so far: 1-pitch, 1 out.
  20. Well, the ML saves leader is going to have a chance to close it out against the opponents. The only question is how large a lead. Of course he's the same guy that coughed up a 5-spot last night.

Looking through the pages of articles on the Nationals I could not find a single mention of the Orioles game in the entire sports section. You'd think there still be some O's fans in the Post readership, but I guess not. Between the introduction of the Nats and the cutbacks in newspaper budgets over the last decade, coverage of the Orioles by the WP got tossed out the window a few years back. Plus, since it was a Monday between the months of August and December, there's the obligatory 36 pages of Redskins coverage that tends to squeeze out other stories. Frankly I'm surprised they found room for Nats coverage.
  22. That wouldn't be an error, a bases-loaded ground-out, plus another infield play not made (which should have led to a run) all in a 4-inning span for the guy who always comes through in October now would it?
  23. Beltran, btw, becomes the first guy to hit two HRs in a post-season game for three different teams. But, y'know, never when it was needed.
  24. Jeez, it's bad enough that the O's hand the Yanx their first (and thus far only) run, but then the Yanx (Jeter specifically) try to hand one back but the O's don't take it.
  25. Ceetar wrote: themetfairy wrote: Beltran's second home run of the game gives the Cardinals an 11-4 lead in the 8th. That guy is so freaking awesome. On the plus side, Wheeler will probably be among the top 5-10 pitching prospects going into next year.
