  2. NL game is back on anyway ... after like a four hour delay 3-1 Cards in the 8th

  4. When I first heard of coach and later Milwaukee/now Kansas City manager [u:13e4ntz7]Ned[/u:13e4ntz7] Yost I was sure that the name similarity and one generation age difference (28 yrs) was too much of a coincidence for them NOT to be related and almost certainly father/son. But as time went on and nothing was ever mentioned (particularly from Gary or Howie) it became apparent that there was no connection. But get this, their full names are: Edward Frederick 'Eddie' Yost [u:13e4ntz7]Edgar[/u:13e4ntz7] Frederick 'Ned' Yost ... again, a heckuva coincidence. But then Ned turns out to be Edgar Frederick Yost [u:13e4ntz7]III[/u:13e4ntz7], a name he passed on to his son 'Ned' IV who played briefly in the minors and now is a coach in the Milwaukee system again implying no relation as to be Jr/II or 'The Third'/III generally involves having the exact name as your father or relative, not merely a similar one. And then the obits mention none either so I guess that issue is pretty settled.
  5. Cashman is apparently denying that there have been trade talks between them and Miami and specifically dismissed the Olberman story. But just the fact that this is all 'out there' while ARod sits during the most important week of the season makes it too delicious to ignore.
  6. Well, the union bosses were the villains in OtW, the union rank & file not so much. Norma Rae is one of those I've never gotten around to.
  7. [u:1phqkalo]Game 4[/u:1phqkalo] Sabathia vs Scherzer Scherzer [16-7; 3.74; 1.27] was, along with CF Austin Jackson and Phil 'Two Saves' Coke, was among the haul that Detroit got for trading Curtis Granderson. And that would be the Curtis Granderson who isn't starting tonight. He's sitting in favor of Brett Gardner and, once again, Eric Chavez is in for ARod.
  8. And so, in typical StL post-season fortune, Beltran's replacement (the hitting Carpenter on their team) goes deep in his first AB with a man on and it's 2-1 Cards.
  9. [u:1r8b8l91]Game 3[/u:1r8b8l91] Lohse vs Cain and they say it might rain. And that's not just there for the rhyme, it's actually supposed to at some point and could interrupt the game, although they're OK so far. Giants score one in top 3 Beltran took one AB, hit into a DP, and left the game with apparent knee problems. He's had a great year but we always knew there was a downside to his signing too.
  10. btw, I meant to mention this the other night so I better do so now as it's looking increasingly like the next meaningful baseball game to be played in the Bronx is going to be next April: - How great was it that Smoltz must have referred to the little league dimensions of YSIII about 46 times during the course of those first two games?
  11. Long-shot trade rumors aside, good on Olberman for: - referring to Trump as a "TV game show host" - noting that he was sitting in a box provided for free by the team - saying how the team has normally been ""aggressively retaliatory" towards those spreading bad pub from insiders or those getting free seats That what Trump said is both stupid and mostly inaccurate goes without saying, but many will simply spread his words for the fun of it while pretending to be reporting news without noting the contradictions and personal bias behind them.
  12. Trump also was on Michael Kay dishing on ARod yesterday. I only heard about it second-hand but apparently he was saying how he never liked ARod all along implying that he did bad stuff while living in one of Trump's places (didn't specify) that pissed Trump and the staff off. As I said in another thread yesterday when this and the Jeter injury story first came up: Yeah Donald, this is all about you. Now we just have to solve the mystery as to why Kay put him on the air in the first place.
  13. Apparently he got a Masters in Phys Ed there. It came during his playing career not before seeing as how he went straight into the major leagues at age 17 and then into the service and then back to the majors where he was basically a full-timer by age 20. Had a better than I realized career -- check out those OBAs! -- especially considering how much old Griffiths Park in Washington cut down on HRs. I read earlier what his H/R splits were for HRs during those years and it was ridiculously lopsided.
  14. A long career as a player was followed by one coaching where he, of course, was prowling the 3rd base side for the 1969 NYM Dubbed 'The Walking Man' for leading the league in walks six different times and finishing his career with a BA/OBA gap of 140 points - about double the usual norm. He played for Washington, Detroit, and the LA Angels from 1944 thru 1962 Did you know that: - he was born in Brooklyn? - attended HS in Queens? - went to NYU? Still the best fielding 3rd base coach I've ever seen. Eddie could pick 'em bare-handed better than some infielders with gloves.

But of course, if they manage to not continue a downward spiral to three decades of mediocrity, they'll be the first to praise the process. Yeah, I think we're going to hear a lot of talk along these lines in the near future even if for no other reason than to say that you were the first to say so if/when it does happen. But between the age of the roster, the injuries (not unrelated to the age thing), the questionable sign/don't sign choices (Swisher, Granderson, Cano), the lack of ready talent on the farm (last year's hot pitchers all went backwards and/or got injured), the one title in a now 12 year span (barring the unthinkable), a possible sweep (the first during this era I believe), and maybe even just a plain running out of luck and good fortune, it is a logical view to take even if a bit dangerous for a team that's better able than any other to restock and reload at the drop of a hat - a hat containing a few hundred million dollars that is. When they missed the playoffs in '08 their response was to drop a half-billion $$ or so on FAs.
  16. The opponents have been 'Goose-egged' in 28 of the 30 innings played so far. And, even though it's so obvious it hardly needs to be said, all their runs have come via HRs
  17. That inning was [bigpurple:3atfa1u4]HUGE[/bigpurple:3atfa1u4] The difference between being up 3-0 and just 2-1 with Sabathia on the mound can't be over-stated.

  19. I'd like him to teach the Yanx to suck in perfect harmony
  20. Let's hope that Coke is the real thing.
  21. It's such an advantage to the Yanx to have an iconic SS on their side to make run-saving plays in the field and then hit HRs in the 9th inning ... Oh wait.
  22. Verlander after ~110 pitches > Papa Fatty at 0 pitches
  23. As long as he wants.
  24. This game seems like the score should be greater than 2-0 I hate games when I get that feeling because the game is really still on the edge even though I'm ready to prematurely put it in the Win column.
  25. Cabrera's hits seem to employ some kind of booster rocket in mid-flight. Shit he's scary!
