  2. None. Talk to me in another decade about #5 And, while we're at it, put the unofficially retired 8 & 24 back into circulation.

Only those enshrined in Cooperstown as a Met get their number retired. And even then, for me, honorees need to have spent the majority of their careers as a Met (and preferably a large majority) - so no Carter, no Mays, no Keith (he falls short on both standards) and it would be fine with me if they put #31 back in circulation as well.
  4. Wheeler - 4.2 Edgin - 0.2 Buck - 1.7 Byrd - 1.7 Murphy - 1.2 Young - 0.5 Davis - 0.5
  5. More like impending FA status and afraid of what he would cost.
  6. Now that this has devolved from a HoF/team discussion into a uni number thing, just let me state for the record (once again) that I'm against retiring just about everyone's number. Seaver's was a no-brainer and I'm fine with Hodges. After that, get back to me in 2021 when Wright retires. Every other number gets put back into circulation.

  8. Cee - how the Mets wind up eventually honoring Beltran (or not) is a call they'll have to make at some point. If it turns out that they base that decision on what his plaque at Cooperstown looks like then shame on them and direct the anger that way, not to the plaque. CF - I share your Carlos attitude, as well as bafflement at both the contemporaneous and continued negativity, but I don't see how this is affected by the plaque (if indeed that's what you're saying by "it matters", I can't tell).
  9. BA puts Flores on their prospects to watch in the 2nd half list: -- A participant in tonights Triple-A all-star game, Flores has cracked 16 extra-base hits (five HR, 10 2B, one 3B) in the past 26 games for Las Vegas. With an uncharacteristic 22-4 K-BB ratio in that time, he appears to be making a concerted effort to hit for power, and so far its been working. Only Albuquerque outfielder Nick Buss has more extra-base hits (17) in this sample. The 21-year-old Flores has played four of his past eight games at first base, suggesting he may be auditioning for a look at that position in New York this summer.

In the whole 'what sports arguments mean in the grand scheme of life on this planet' point of view? -- Sure. But, even considering that as a starting point, I've always thought this topic to be particularly inane. Too many seem to take this whole 'what you go in as' discussion way too seriously and this is all assuming for the moment that we know Beltran is even going to get there (hardly a slam-dunk). A player gets elected for the totality of his career and not just a specific portion of it. If the hat on the plaque (and really that's all this is about) shows a KC logo as opposed to a NYM one it doesn't mean he was any less a Met or that he'd be any more of one if we reverse the case. ALL the teams he played with are still going to be listed either way and Met fans (the ones who don't already hate him anyway) will still be able to claim that another player from their team is going into the HoF. For the record, he spent more time as a NYM than as a Royal and, even with all that DL time thrown in, still had slightly more games played and ABs as well. I'm sure with the time spent being so close the poobahs at Cooperstown will allow him leeway in how he wants it displayed but I, for one, won't be fretting the decision or opt to think of him any differently based on his choice.
  11. An interesting breakdown of the ASG participants from John Sickels: Of the 77 players/alternates named this year, 59 came through the draft (US, PR, Canada); and while you often hear about what a 'crap-shoot' the draft is and how examples are always thrown out of great players coming from the back of the draft, the odds still greatly favor those picks towards the top. Of those 59 drafted players on last night rosters: - 27 were drafted in the 1st round or 1st round supplemental - 15 more were 2nd round picks - 11 came out of rounds 3 thru 9 - just 6 came from the 10th round or later 1st round/Supp = 46% 2nd round or higher = 71%

  13. A bit surprising that they're holding Lee back like that as he threw all of one inning/19 pitches last night and it'll wind up being eleven days between starts for him. Of course the Mets are doing the same with Harvey but you wouldn't figure Lee to get the same kid-gloves treatment.
  14. Since my IGTs are on a one-game winning streak (bringing my total wins for the year up to one) it can't be too early to keep the karma going by looking past these next two looooooongest days on the sports calendar. Jeremy Hefner who, in the span of a few short months, has gone from the man most likely to lose his slot in the rotation to being the guy who starts twice in a four game span, gets the nod. I suspect his opponent will be Cliff Lee. He's been their best pitcher this season and it's his turn anyway. Although seeing as how it's getting towards the trading deadline and it just wouldn't be a trading deadline season without speculation about Lee being dealt elsewhere, you never know where Cliff could be having his mail forwarded come Friday. I suspect the Phils will follow up Lee with Hamels so, with a pair of LHPs right off the bat to start the 2nd half, it'll be interesting to see if our 1st base situation is all Satin-y smooth or if it remains more Ikey spikey. CF Ben Revere is one Philly who will NOT be in the lineup for this game, not to mention for at least the next six weeks, as he'll be the guy with the busted foot.
  15. Byrd - 2.5 Recker - 1.5 Quintanilla - 1.5 Wright - 1.0 Brown - 1.0 Young - 1.0 Rice - 0.5 Torres - 0.5 Gee - 0.5

Turns out that I was more correct than I thought seeing as how any vote that awards the MVP for pitching a scoreless 8th inning in a three run game is essentially a pre-arranged deal.
  17. NL better score quick or else Harvey's going to have to start game one of the WS on the road.
  18. Edgy MD wrote: Yeah, they're really gonna get a six-out appearance by Rivera. Good luck with that notion. No, with just a 2-run (now 3) lead, Leyland was afraid of losing the lead in the 7th or 8th and risking not even having a bottom 9th for him to pitch. With a bigger lead he would have held him back but, without one, was committed to using him in the 8th.
  19. Edgy MD wrote: I seem to remember Prince was mostly decent on defense. His hands are decent and he's not as immobile as his bulk suggests, but I don't predict too many gold gloves in his future.
  20. Would have been fine with me if Cliff Lee and Dom Brown saved some of their suck for later this week.
  21. I only just saw this Salvador Perez guy for the first time recently. He's listed at "only" 6' 3"/245 but he looks even bigger than that (maybe because KC has a couple of pretty short relievers). Whatever he actually is, you certainly didn't see a lot of catchers that size back in the day.

  23. Wahlberg & Denzel in an inter-racial, mis-matched law enforcement buddy movie ... haven't seen one of those before.
  24. Tulowitski so admires Jeter that he wears number 2 in his honor ... and has apparently cut down on his lateral range in his honor also.
  25. Tom looking a bit thinner these days.
