You figure that'll catch up to them eventually but I kept thinking that last year too but it never did [their 85-77 record "should have been" 79-83 on account of a -21 RS/RA]
  2. Niese - 4.4 Farnsworth - 1.0 Murphy - 1.2 Granderson - 1.6 Wright - 1.0 Abreu - 0.3
  3. Tough to decide which team had the worse bullpen night. Probably the Mets because they blew a lead, plus the Yanx had the decency to do so at 1AM EDT so there were fewer NY eyeballs watching. But that doesn't mean theirs was easy to swallow for a fan. Tied at one in the 8th in Anaheim last night, Yanx set-up man Shawn Kelly walks Collin Cowgill to start the inning, but then does the heavy lifting by retiring Aybar & Trout So with Cowgill on 2nd and 2 outs they IBB Pujols - a logical enough move. Problem was that Kelly followed that up with a walk to Ibanez loading the bases, then a walk to Kendrick (Howie not Anna) forcing in a run. Out goes Kelly (literally, he got tossed for arguing) and in comes LOOGY Matt Thorton - who quickly walked the light-hitting John McDonald (PH-ing) to force in another run Out goes Thorton and in comes Preston Clairborn (no really, that's his name ... and he's a baseball player not a hairdresser) who promptly walks Chris Ianetta and it's 3 runs for the Angels without a hit Final score: Angels 4 (on just 4 hits) - Yanx 1
  4. Obviously the pen in general and DiceK in particular take the biggest lumps for this one, but once again we do the score early then try to sit on the lead thing. In this case there were two runs out of the first four batters but then just one for the rest of the game. P.S. Don't forget Farnsworth when it comes to beer distribution.
  5. ... and now there's even less.
  6. There's not a lot a reason to suspect that this game is going to end well, is there?
  7. If nothing else this game is sailing right along (he says tempting fate)
  8. Who says EYj can't field? (that might have been a tad overacting by Young) It's not that EYJ can't field (or even that he over does it) it's just that he often plays so deep that he needs his speed to make up for it and makes catches like that more necessary than maybe they ought to be.
  9. Would have liked to see more than one run out of four hard-hit balls there in the top of the 4th butwhatcanyado?
  10. Day 1, 05/01/2014. Starting outfield: Granderson, Lagares, Chris Young. Sitting: Eric Young (1). Day 2, 05/02/2014. Starting outfield: Granderson, Lagares, Chris Young. Sitting: Eric Young (2) Day 3, 05/03/2014. Starting outfield: Granderson, Lagares, Chris Young. Sitting: Eric Young (3) [crossout:qq7ychpg]Day 4, 05/04/2014. Sitting: Eric Young (4) Day 5, 05/05/2014. Starting outfield: Eric Young, Granderson, Abreu. Sitting: Lagares (1)
  11. Terry must have reason to think that Eovoldi is more vulnerable against LHBs as Wright & d'Arnaud are the only RHBs in the lineup. But, yeah, that's a big outfield down there for the likes of Abreu and not your best CF
  12. Since last May 30 29 starts 196 IP 174 Hits 136/44 K/BB 2.66 ERA 1.11 WHiP
  13. Hey it (MG) may even be a good movie, I don't know. Never saw it and suspect I never will (like I said, was pretty much past the target demo before it ever hit). It's just kind of weird to suddenly be swamped with articles telling me that something I was only passingly familiar with was a major cultural event worthy of numerous retrospectives and 'where are they now?' updates. That's something I expect maybe from the likes of VH-1 and those 'List' shows they used to do where the culture geeks there would declare every passing fad of their childhood to be a universal touchstone. But these 'Mean Girls' hosannas, in addition to coming out of the usual pop culture suspects, are also being done by the likes of the NY Times and Washington Post.
  14. Should be fun times in the NL East this week with all teams within 1.5 games from top to bottom. Anyone can go from 1st to last or vice versa inside of two days. So as we're battling it out in south Florida, Atlanta host the (currently .500) Cardinals, Philly welcomes the Jays, Nationals get the Dodgers in DC
  15. We did just play them although we have to do so this time in Miami where oddly they become an entirely different offensive team despite what seems to be a pitcher-firendly park. Record: H = 14-5 R = 2-10 Hitting: H = .307/.370/.495 R = .215/.287/.333 RS/G: H = 6.16 R = 2.67 XBH: H = 3.79/G R = 1.92/G I know it's a small sample but those gaps are ridiculous. It's like they're the Bizarro-Mets. Hell, they even somehow manage to strike out 35% less often: 7.21/G vs 11.17/G They also pitch better at home [2.86 ERA vs 4.66] although that could at least partially explained by Jose Fernandez making 5 of his 7 starts at home so far (I wonder how many adjustments that team will make to skew things so that he gets the majority of his starts at home considering the effect it has on their attendance?).
  16. I didn't know until the rash of TENTH ANNIVERSARY articles and retrospectives (at least a dozen in the last week or so) that the movie MEAN GIRLS was a major cultural touchstone in this country. I mean, look, I realize that I was way out of the target demographic for this flick and all, but I don't think I even heard about it until years after it was out and even then it was only because Lohan was becoming such a mess by that point that that movie was brought up to show that there was actually a time before she was a human train wreck. But apparently MEAN GIRLS was THE culturally shared experience for the first decade of the 21st century with more quotable lines known to all than anything since maybe CASABLANCA, or at least since ANIMAL HOUSE.
  17. Some may have a bad impression of Matsuzaka on account of his first three games for the Mets - although in fairness they threw him right into the fire having not pitched in the majors in nearly a full year and only 80-some ML innings for all of 2011-13. But after those rocky first three starts he's given the Mets 36.2 innings of 1.47 ERA, 1 HR, and less than a baserunner/inning (0.87 WHiP) over 4 starts + 7 relief outings. Argue whether you prefer him starting over Mejia or not, but let's not pretend he's the one weighing us down here. As Captain Renault (kind of) once said: You shouldn't throw away pitchers like that my dear Ricky, some day they may be scarce
  18. Bad News -- Lost three of four Good News -- Could be in (well, tied for) 1st place by the end of tomorrow (1 game out of 1st, 1/2 game out of 2nd at the moment)
  19. Just a guess here, but I don't think Ruben turns that DP. To me he often seems content to take the easy out, possibly out of fear of messing up by trying the harder play.
  20. Is it just me or have the between-inning gaps been particularly long today? It seems like they come back from their two-minutes commercials and then everyone is standing around for another minute or two. You wanna know why most games go over three hours today Bud? ... there's one reason right there.
  21. Vida Blue There was a time when the answer to all weird baseball questions was Vida Blue
  22. I'll say this for Abreu, I don't think he's had a bad AB yet.
  23. EXTRA: DUDA SWINGS Moves bat through air; makes effective contact with ball And with it he gets the kind of hit that Ike simply wasn't getting since about his 1st season. btw, it just occurred to me that last night's meltdown wrecked the Recker win streak
  24. I didn't see the 1st inning. What was the story on the fly-ball/DP that ended it? Was Muffy being dopey/frisky again?
