  1. Abreu making bait outta Cumpton.

I would think that the blocking/non-blocking thing would be a judgement call not subject to review, but I don't know that.

  4. Keith & Gary are missing the point here, IMO, Lagares plain got his hand under Martin's shin prior to the tag. I'm not sure that the new rules had anything to do with this.
  5. Day game tomorrow. The players should just sleep in the clubhouse at this point.
  6. Well, if swinging away isn't working may be we do have to start bunting more often.
  7. Juan Lagares / in sunshine or in shadow
  8. Hey I got a good idea, let's self-erase a few more base runners from the paths. This time, with a hope-he-runs-into-one as basically the only hope with Cy Oung at the plate, Recker decides to try and pre-steal 2nd.
  9. Matsuzaka's RBI was all set up by the failure of Flores to hit into a DP. He hit it much too slowly.
  10. Ezekial Stephen Spruill Conventional wisdom says that, as a pitcher the Braves drafted then gave up on, he can't be any good. 2nd round pick of the Braves from ... wait for it ... Marietta, Georgia.
  11. So did we hear anything about EYJ? (I didn't listen to any of the between-games stuff). He can't possibly be available and sitting both games plus all those Game 1 switcheroos
  12. You know what's still possible here, right? ... runners on, only one out.
  13. Just inventing ways to lose!
  14. Heading for the 1/3 mark that division is almost upside down from what many would have expected. Division as a whole is slightly under .500 but mostly they're just beating up on each other and treading water otherwise. Going into tomorrow: Toronto - Yanx - Balt - Rays - Sox Other things few would have predicted at this point of the season: At or above .500: Minnesota, Seattle, ChiSox, Miami, Rox, Brewers Under .500: Texas, BoSox, Pirates, Nationals, Rays
  15. And the Rays win on a single followed by two straight misplays by the Sox. 9th straight loss for Boston, now 8 games below .500 and in last place on the season.
  16. BoSox scored 5 in the top of the 1st in Tampa off of David Price, but managed to give back the lead by the 5th inning. They're still tied at 5-5 as the Rays bat in the bottom of the 15th having not scored in 10 innings, the Sox have been shut-out on 2 hits over the last 14 frames.
  17. That's now a 6-15 month of May w/7 of those losses via one-run It's like it's not as bad as it looks, but yet it is.
  18. Multiple innings with multiple chances = a whole lotta oh-fers
  19. Wheeler not missing enough bats here.
  20. "I assume, then, that a walkoff grand slam with the game tied 6-6 was ruled a 7-6 win instead of a 10-6 win." -- Yup. Game was considered over as soon as that first run crossed the plate. "I kind of think those homers should be retroactively restored." -- Well, that was one argument but ultimately not the winning one. The rule was, I believe, changed around 1920 just as the dead-ball era was ending so there wouldn't have been all that many HRs affected.
  21. I know Aaron lost a HR when he was called for stepping out of the batter's box while hitting one out of the park. I guess that's technically not 'losing' one because it was never counted in the first place but he always maintained his total was shortchanged. Maybe there's a rain-out story somewhere as well. The other thing I remember from the Aaron-Ruth chase was that Ruth lost one by hitting a "walk-off" HR with runners on base but the rules at the time only gave the batter credit for the hit required to score the winning run. So hitting one over the fence with a runner on 3rd in a tie game only netted you a single, if on 2nd only a double, etc. It wasn't until records began to be computerized in the late-60s that this was discovered and it set off quite a debate as to whether Babe should retroactively be upped to 715 HRs especially since both Mays & Aaron were then closing in. But ultimately it was decided that the rules at the time they were recorded should stand (the rule was changed to the current one early in Ruth's career so there was only that one negated HR).
  22. Edgy MD wrote: I had understood that statistics from postponed games stood, even though the game was to be restarted. Is this no longer so? Ashie's got it right. Stats used to count for suspended games --it was one way players could get credit for more than 162 (or 154) games played in a single season-- but not for unofficial rainouts. What they did update a few years back was the rule that suspended games would now be picked up from the point of suspension rather than re-played from the beginning. SF & Colorado had one suspended while tied up in the 6th just two days ago which will be picked up at some future date. But, as far as stats go for Firday's game at CF, Aaron Hill's HR never happened and Colon's ERA is exactly where it was at this time yesterday (when he was young - Bartolo turns 41 today!).
  23. Hitting nearly .500 for the week lands Dilson on BA's 'Hot Prospect' list 4. Dilson Herrera, 2b/ss, Mets Team: high Class A St. Lucie (Florida State) Age: 20 Why He’s Here: .484/.500/.839 (15-for-31), 7 R, 5 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 1 BB, 0 SO, 3-for-4 SB The Scoop: Herrera, obtained from the Pirates last year in the Marlon Byrd deal, just keeps hitting. He leads the minors with 67 hits, ranks second in the FSL in total bases and has posted double-digit totals in doubles and steals with 11 each. He’s a contact fiend who can spray the ball around and has enough sock to rack up plenty of doubles. He’s so much of a contact fiend, in fact, that he had just one non-contact plate appearance (a walk) this week, while recording seven extra-base hits.
  24. Throw Colorado's Nolan Arenado onto the pile of guys breaking fingers via head-first slides. At least this one wasn't 1st base.
  25. I like these two consecutive posts from different messages: Oh, well, at least I have gin. ** followed by ** Still pouring...
