They do it because they're afraid of the size of their mailbag responses if they don't include the disclaimer. Probably are afraid of the responses from certain media-types who won't read the column but will hear second-hand only that some idiot up in New York is trashing Derek Jeter. Girardi, btw, is apparently playing the 'he's clutch' card as to why Mr. 487 OPS in August can't be/won't be benched and/or dropped in the lineup.
  2. Marlins announcer #1: "The Yankees are wearing patches commemorating Derek Jeter on their uniforms and hats the rest of the year. I'm sure they'll be forced to wear Derek Jeter Cologne." Marlins announcer #2: "All that stuff, I'm sure, is stuff that Derek Jeter doesn't want." Number two, you're an idiot. One of those (not sure which) is legendary Seaver-killer Tommy Hutton.
  3. 3rd start in a row with high pitch-counts early on for NYM pitchers - and this one would be a lot worse if it weren't for very timely GiDPs And the kicker here is that, even though it's expanded roster time, we actually have a LESS deep pitching staff than we had prior to Sept 1 as the two promotions, Goeddel and that LHP from A-ball essentially, merely replaced the loss of DiceK & Edgin and aren't going to be trusted as much as those two.

  5. I don't know if there's anyone currently on Houston that I've ever seen play much less seen enough to develop a dislike for. Most of their roster was in the minors leagues until sometime last month and I think some of them were still in high school. So I'll go with (currently injured) OF George Springer because he's going to make a lot of money in his career and there's very little chance of him cutting me in on the inheritance. But those Dodgers, now THEY have some hatable players in your mind I'm guessing.
  6. And they did again today, beating Pitt via a 2-out/9th inning/walk-off single that somehow scored Yadier Molina from 2nd (it usually takes a triple to score him). Pirates seem to be running into a ton of bad luck lately. Their last six losses have been via five one-run losses and one two-run defeat. Looked at another way, they're 6-6 over their last 12 games even though they're +13 in runs scored during that time.
  7. * Braves finally get some runs this afternoon and take the final game of their series w/Philly after getting just 0 and 3 [u:37vv1cqp]hits[/u:37vv1cqp] in the first two. * Brewers and their 7 game losing streak has not only knocked them out of 1st place in the NLC for the first time since April is also exposes them as a sub-.500 team since the end of April They're also just a game from being dropped from the 2nd WC slot at this point. * Pirates & Cards scoreless in the 7th in St Loo IN NYM-related news, Pitt mgr Clint Hurdle sent the just-recalled Chase d'Arnaud in to pinch-run for Ike Davis
  8. The Post's Joel Sherman dares to tackle the tiger by calling out Girardi for failing to live up to his early season pledge to "run a season not a farewell tour". Of course it's always possible that JG is under orders from up top to NOT do to Jeter was he (and Torre before him) was quite willing to do to ARod, Posada, and others to one degree or another, and that's move him down in the lineup, replace him for defense, or simply sit him more often.
  9. Niese - 0.5 Mejia - 1.0 Familia - 1.0 Torres - 0.5 Lagares - 2.0 d'Arnaud - 2.0 Wright - 1.5 Flores - 1.0 den Dekker - 0.5
  10. "And when they're out, they're out" -- So what's to prevent them from making more?
  11. I think the 'never played anywhere other than SS'* label is important to him and to his worshipers, in part because five or fifty years down the road this 'stat' will be trotted out as an extra layer of proof of greatness by those who are either unable or unwilling to remember and/or pass on how things really were that final year (or yearS if you prefer). That, plus the same spot in his batting order edict, will contribute to the 'He went out on top' angle that seems so important to myth building. That the 'go out on top' story (probably) won't include a post-season trip in his final year will, of course, be treated as Cashman's fault, not his. * if we ignore DH - 65 games to date for his career including 9 this season
  12. Zvon wrote: Who's that guy who pisses you off...on the Phillies?Youall know who I would pick. Hamels. Typical stupid, meathead jock disguised in a metrosexual package. But WHO is that guy who pisses you off on the Nationals?
  13. Game takes forever and a day and it's still a full inning ahead of the Yanx/Sawx. Boston up 9-3 btw. The Yanx brought up Eight players for the expanded roster period so I might watch through to the end of this game just to see if they've got a guy in a triple digit uni.
  14. A clean inning from Mejia would be a really nice change of pace right about now. He's had very few of those in this second half.
  15. Y'know the scene in 'On the Waterfront' where the foreman shouts out, "Everybody works today", but then pointedly bypasses Terry Malloy? Well that's what tonight is like: 'Everybody hits today ... except for you there Granderson'
  16. IF this game ever actually gets around to ending, I think we've got a decent shot at winning it.
  17. Four-run lead is restored. Our chances of winning this game just rose to 35%
  18. Juan Lagares is a golden god!
  19. Toni Basil is tonight's home plate umpire? [fimg=250]http://www.rick.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Toni-basil-main.jpg[/fimg] Oh wait, I misheard, it's Toby Basner. That makes much more sense. 2-0 early and we're hitting' Brad Penny ... not all that hard so far, but more often than not first time through the order.
  20. I'd say the odds of him continuing to field at a sub-.900 clip are about the same as him continuing his over 1.000 OPS (currently 1092)
  21. Joins a cast of dozens competing for the 2B job in Queens circa 2016
  22. Quitting Twitter renews L.J.'s focus .... or something like that.
  23. "It was all Bobby's fault" was an all-purpose go-to excuse for a while for lots of parties.
  24. Philosophical question: If Brad Penny disappears from ML baseball for a while and hasn't pitched against your team for a number of years, is he still an asshole? Answer: Yes, yes he is.
  25. That it ended on consecutive K's by Granderson & Wright is somehow appropriate for the 2nd half of this season.
