  3. That EYJ wouldn't be kept should hardly be surprising. Tomorrow (Tuesday) at midnight is the non-tender deadline so there'll likely be a flurry of names and rumors between now and then and probably a handful of minor name deals going on across the league.
  4. I was thinking more of Piazza, but either one works to some degree. The most dangerous case is where you acquire the high-priced guy while still a losing team rather than as a final piece to the puzzle and then are forced to continue to import pieces to put around him. That's why I thought of Piazza (but he gave them an identity!!) in conjunction with Cano.

Seattle has seemed like they've just been itching to spend money to buttress things up since the Cano signing, and after jumping from a couple of 70-some win seasons to 87 last year they seem now to be in full go-for-it mode. This may all work out but it's also part of the trap when you sign a guy to a huge deal, you suddenly find yourself under the gun to double down again and again during the time that he's there. The M's have now had three straight years where they've signed someone to a contract worth over $100mil [Cano, then re-upped King Felix, and last week inked their young IF Kyle Seager to a lengthy deal). Here they go with a more modest deal in terms of years and money, but it's also to a 34 y/o DH.
  6. Yeah, Lawrie was a fairly highly touted prospect IIRC, but seemed more interested for a while there to have his tattoo count keep up with his ML HR totals.
  7. Richie Ashburn of course
  8. Marlins acquire RHP Aaron Crow from KC in exchange for minor league pitchers Brian Flynn and Reid Redman. Crow, 28, who had twice been a 1st round draft pick (10th by Nats in 2008 but didn't sign, then 12th by Royals in '09), was relieving with KC but could be tried as a starter.
  9. Billy Beane continues to swim against the current by dealing the thought-to-be untouchable Josh Donaldson to Toronto for a package of young players headed by Brett Lawrie. Donaldson, turning 29 next week and not a FA until 2019, is coming off back to back seasons where he was a top-10 MVP (4th & 8th). Infielder Lawrie goes to Oakland along with pitching prospects Sean Nolin & Kendall Graveman, plus 18 y/o infielder Franklin Barreto.
  10. Hope you were joking. Just kind of blurted out the first thing that came to my mind more than anything, BUT ... Crawford is a 27 y/o SS with a plus-glove and is under team control for the next three years being swapped (in this theoretical example) for the guy who would lose his job anyway if we did this trade plus Muffy who could walk in a year. Just my opinion, but I think it's the Giants who would say no to that deal first.
  11. Muffy & Tejada for Brandon Crawford ... WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR SANDY?!?!?!
  12. I think what not just the non-signing but the lack of interest in this case shows is that, until they can get some winning, and therefore a bump in attendance, and therefore some increased revenue under their belts, they're going to remain in a risk-averse mode for a while.
  13. Centerfield wrote: 6 year, $68 million. Pretty reasonable. At that price point, it's disappointing that the Mets were not in play. Well, "reasonable" depends on how good he turns out to be. Not everyone from Cuba is going to be as good as Puig or Abreu or be as ready to hit the ground running as they were even if he does turn out to be good. That's why I'm saying that Cuddyer is the less risky move even if he has less upside.
  14. He was the higher-ceiling though less certain, the more expensive in $$ and years though not requiring a draft pick, alternative to Cuddyer. I suppose only time will tell if not pursuing him was the more prudent move or just the cheap-ass cop-out one.
  15. Mets Willets Point wrote: Before this, I'd assumed Cespedes was the DHeir apparent. Not ideally. Cespedes was a Gold Glove finalist this year. He also has a great arm which is why it was frustrating for the Sox when he wouldn't move to RF. That "in a few year" can turn to a matter of months or even weeks. Papi is always one stride away from a knee blowout, DH or not. Papi is certainly going to fall apart one of these years, but he's been remarkably durable since landing a full time job some dozen years ago; 600+ PAs in nine of the last eleven seasons. Is signed thru 2015 but with vesting options for 16 and a team one for '17 at less than top-shelf rates so he may be around for a while yet.
  16. Yeah, supposedly Cepedes has agreed to move to RF -- something he pointedly refused to do following the mid-season trade which brought him to Boston -- but I think he's more likely to be in a different city before this hot season stuff is all over. And the perhaps the longer-term plan is that Hanley moves to 3B in a few year when Panda replaces Papi at DH.
  17. Lannan signed a minor league deal with Colorado (see the 'Continuing Careers' thread)
  18. A Boy Named Seo wrote: I don't remember anything about the Presley collision being the trigger. I don't think anyone knew at the time that it was, only in retrospect.
  19. Sure things first, I'll deal with the others at a later date. Craig Biggio Pedro Martinez Mike Piazza John Smoltz Randy Johnson Tim Raines

  21. Mets Willets Point wrote: I'm getting a Crawford/Gonzalez vibe from these moves. Similar 'BIG' names at similar ages. The part that's smarter/less-risky about these new deals is that they're (reportedly) for five years each rather than seven.
  22. I'd put him in LF. Their OF was a mess last season* and, with that wall out there, LF is kind of a hybrid IF/OF position anyway. The Cepedes trade watch is now on. * They appear to have used 13 different players out there in a mishmash of position switching where only one guy got as many as 60 starts in any one spot - that was Jackie Bradley in CF (105 starts) and he hit a whopping .198
  23. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Wonder if they now trade Boegarts. For Niese or something along those lines. Not sure if they plan on using Hanley at SS or not. I think that he'll eventually move is a given, whether that starts this year or not is the question that may affect the future of Bogaerts.
  24. And now CBS Sports (Heyman) is reporting Panda to the Sox for five years as well. Now all that remains is seeing how long it takes ESPN to claim credit for breaking both stories.
