  1. McLouth & Werth are also currently less-than-healthy OFs who can't yet be considered locks to be ready to go in early April. Tony Gwynn Jr is in camp and may wind up as their OD CF
  2. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Yeah, but all the same I continue to not get the Ruben thing. This team needs its reserve shortstop to be a LH/switch hitting, base-stealing, versatile, bunting, glove-y type. Rubie isn't any of those things. Sure, now we just have to find one of those.

  4. Still out there (I think): Sean Burnett, Phil Coke, Ryan Feierabend, Pedro Figueroa, Troy Patton, Aaron Poreda, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Raul Valdes. First two have the best track record. Hate to hit the Coke machine this early though. Coke signed with somebody (although I forget who at this point) just in the last few days. Minor league deal too IIRC which seemed kind of odd to me in that a living, breathing lefty rarely has to go slumming for work so perhaps there's a health issue involved.
  5. Sigh ... if only it were street legal.
  6. "Into each life a little hog must fall" -- friend of mine, circa: many many moons ago.
  7. Part of Terry's 'safeness' (or not) should he endure a slow start occur might depend on whether or not mgmt has a replacement in mind that they view as something other than an interim caretaker following a change just for change sake. There's no one on the current coaching staff who screams 'Next man up' and -- (just a guess here) to the eternal dismay of a certain segment of the NYM fan base -- I don't believe that Sandy et al are all aboard the Backman train.

  9. 4 more walks plus 2 HBPs by NYM pitching in just 3 innings today. Too early to panic but this, combined with the TEN BBs from a couple days ago, is a lot of gift baserunners so far this spring.
  10. Denard Span had surgery on "a right core muscle" this past weekend, almost certainly a no-go for OD My guess is that this means Michael Taylor makes the team (he may have anyway) and that either he or Nate McLoud gets the start in CF.
  11. He seemed a bit unsure of himself rounding 3rd there - as if he was expecting to get held up only to be surprised by the 'Go' signal which in turn messed with his gait. What he should have known, and which the coach obviously did, was that it was EYJr throwing the ball in from the OF and when that happens everyone not named Bartolo gets the green light.
  12. Mets out-hit Sawx 12-5 but manage to lose 6-3. Walking 10 Bostonians whilst drawing none yourself seems to be one of the bigger factors. 2 BBs each by Robles & Satterwhite plus 3 by Akeel Morris despite pitching just one inning each. Meanwhile, 3/4 with 2 runs scored for the currently .600 hitting Nieuwenhuis

One of them and this will shock you is a visitor from the future wearing what we didn't recognize in 1983 was... a Washington Nationals hat. (How did we never notice the cap before?) Or maybe the guy was just a big fan of Walgreens Pharmacy.
  14. I'm assuming that uni number was just to symbolize his 1st round draft status and that he hasn't been wearing that as a player? After all, he certainly doesn't have the game to be wearing #1 Which brings up the question: who do you suppose holds the MLB record for HRs while wearing #1 on their uni? I don't know the answer to this question, btw, it just hit me as I looked at that picture.
  15. Chris Young (the tall, white, pitching variety) signs a one year deal with Kansas City. Let's hope he gets some strikeouts this year of Chris Young the MFY OFer
  16. Sure, and even with the repeat auditions in rookie ball he's been right about at the median age for where he's been pitching the last two years. But that lack of background as an amateur is even more reason to not start him skipping levels off of one good year at low-A ball (as was suggested above). PSL sounds perfect for where he needs to be this season. And if he's blowing that level away at mid-season then we'll talk promotion.
  17. Yeah, I didn't even realize that it was split squads today, tough to keep track at this time of year. Mets 3 - Braves 1 - 3 innings of 1 run/2 hit ball from the deGrominator, then five other pitchers combined for six shutout innings: Bowman (2 IP), Gilmartin, Carlyle, Goeddel, Thorton (1 IP/each) - and 3 hits/3 RBIs from Conforto (1 RBI single, 2 RBI double)
  18. The only problem with comparing him to Granderson is that Kirk is putting up his numbers while for the most part getting to skip LHPs (exactly 1/6 of his ML PAs are vs LHP) Now maybe it's the old Catch-22 where he can't hit them because he doesn't face them and verse-vica, but his limited sample [.167/.270/.205] doesn't give one all that much CAHNfidence. But that just makes his RHP splits look that much better [.255/.324/.428] and hopefully a good fill-in/PH combo with JMJr
  19. In fairness to Brian Cashman and this retirement idea, after Jeter's leadership which took a team from 4 WS championships in the year's prior to his being named captain to [u:2uavzizf]One[/u:2uavzizf] in the 12 years after he got the honor which included several playoffs misses, numerous 1st-round exits, plus the biggest post-season collapse in the history of ever, how can any mere mortal be expected to live up to such lofty standards.
  20. Mets lose 8-7 - two hitless innings from starter Steven Matz. Was perfect after hitting his first batter - 3R HR from Brandon Allen. Then four runs in the 8th made it close - 2 hits each for Campbell and Danny Muno - also decent on the mound was 2.2 innings from Gee [0 runs, 1 hit] - not so good were Montero's 3rd & 4th innings [several walks & singles and needed a bail out from Gee] - and then just plain terrible was 1/3 of an inning from Jack Leathersich [bB, BB 1B, SB, BB, Line-out, 1B] which led to a 6-run Marlins 7th (the inning began as a 3-2 NYM lead)
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Darling did some play-by-play his first year with Washington. He wasn't no good, but he wasn't any better at analysis. By his own admission he was terrible -- although he took the job on something like (literally) a week's notice and was not only new to the job but was unprepared for it as well, both in terms of his knowledge of the home team and of the league in general. Both he and Keith have talked about their "dark" period, roughly from their retirements through maybe the turn of the century, when they were disconnected from the game that had consumed them for much of the previous three decades or so, so taking the job coming off that era he was bound to be shaky at best. Fortunately for us, we got the broken-in and more informed version.
  22. This isn't the first time Ronnie has PH'd doing p-b-p. I think it's even happened during a reg season game or two. Either way, I don't think someone is going to hire him to do it on a regular basis except for the color work he's already doing for TBS's GotW and post-season. But there's not enough network baseball to have him leave the Mets broadcasts entirely and it's tough to figure on another team making an offer so attractive that he'd leave here to just do the same thing somewhere else. As far as Gelbs goes, I'd be fine if they simply went without a sideline guy. For the most part I always thought they were a waste of time (in all sports) until Burkhardt came along and turned what was usually a kind of self-indulgent 'Hey look what we can do' job into virtually a must-watch segment. But unless you can find a sub who can make it that way again I'd just as soon they drop the whole concept.
  23. The drawback we've heard about him, virtually since the moment he appeared as a pro, was that he lacked the power you'd like to see from a corner OF but also doubted his speed/instincts/arm to play CF and so would ultimately wind up as a "tweener". But the strength/power increase last year might eventually put those fears at least partially to rest - and in an era of low offense and shifts, an all-fields/high-OBP guy could really shine. I suspect we'll see him briefly this year
  24. And Matt Reynolds wins it with a lead-off, 9th inning, solo walk-off. Good day to be named Matt on the Mets.
