The very first Hooters is right over the causeway from Tampa/ St. Pete in Clearwater. (I was in the building opposite it on a business project a few years ago) Went there for lunch for three days before I realized they serve food there. Later I suspect the Tampa area probably averages about 2 Hooters per sq mile. Just seems like that type of town to me.
  2. Not a good day apparently, but 2 more hits each from Flores, Nieuwenhuis, Muno, and Monell - so that's what I'm taking from the game. Also a scoreless/hitless/walkless IP from the very much in play these days Jack Leathersich.
  3. Al Rosen, 1953 MVP for the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" - 91

  5. Possible options: Rubin-ESPN.com: "Sources told ESPNNewYork.com that St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Sam Freeman and Washington Nationals left-hander Xavier Cedeno both are out of options and unlikely to make their clubs' Opening Day rosters. That means they either need to be traded, or their clubs must try to pass them through waivers to send them to the minors to open the season. " Freeman, 27 y/o, has 70 IP in 81 games over 3 seasons although better splits vs RHPs [526 OPS-against] than against LHB [758] Cedeno. 28: 52 IP across parts of 4 years (w/HOU & WAS) with worse numbers overall as compared to Freeman but better splits vs LHBs ... and there will likely be others as well as roster crunch time comes around.
  6. This game has already featured a Tyler Pill and a Taylor Hill (not to mention a Rich Hill). I predict that by the middle of the 2016 season 30% of the league will be named either Tyler or Taylor (or Jordan). The Nats got a jump on everyone when they had a Taylor Jordan pitch for them last year. I hear now that they're actively looking for a hurler named Jordan Taylor - preferably a lefty who they can match-up with Taylor Jordan.

Gary does a lot of college hoops in the off-season so he's probably busy this weekend while Keith & Ron probably decided that they have better things to do. Besides, the subs, I'm sure, are cheaper. Duquette is already in their employ and subs in on radio - we may hear him a lot if the Ice-landers go deep in the playoffs. Not sure what the backstory is on the other guy.
  8. Zack Wheeler = "sore" elbow Vic Black = MRI on shoulder Josh Edgin = Getting second opinion from (say it with me people) Dr. James Andrews Wheeler it is said "will not need" an MRI on the hinge (how 'bout getting one anyway?) and is expected to miss just one start (today's). This is something that he experienced during the course of last season as well, and it was managed, Alderson said. That is what is expected this season. (Puma - NY Post)
  9. Let's see now: we've got 'partially torn' (Tanaka) vs 'stretched' (Edgin). I think at this point you'd have to bet on Edgin going under the knife first simply because Tanaka has ruled it out and is determined to pitch until it tears completely or at least feels a whole lot worse to the point where he can't pitch effectively. Edgin, on the other hand, is still mulling over the option for getting what would essentially be 'preventative' type TJ surgery before even trying the rest/rehab/pray route.
  10. Yeah, let's cut him because he looked bad in a ST outing.

  12. - Yu Darvish is the latest, and the 1st big name this year, to take the plunge. Operation set for Tuesday. The best laid plans ... - Josh Edgin holding off ... at least for the time being. It's not torn it's just stretched - same with Cliff Lee although supposedly his elbow injury is something other than the UCL. Rumor has it he may retire rather than undergo a lengthy rehab (whether it's officially 'TJ' surgery or not). Right now he's trying to 'pitch through it'. - Tanaka's arm apparently still attached after his first ST game and his first real pitching since last June aside for two 2 brief cameos (7 innings total) in September - Toronto's Marcus Stroman (former #1 pick out of Duke) will miss all or most of the season but his torn ligament was in his knee so he doesn't belong in this thread (even though I just put him here)

  14. I suspect one of the Plawecki/d'Arnaud duo gets dealt at some point in the future - although probably not this year.
  15. Maybe because of his slugging (16 of 36 hits last year went for XB) and because many of his hits seemed to come in "Big Spots", I hadn't realized that AR's NYM stats were quite this low: .207 BA, .261 OBA in 309 PAs over two seasons His model, of course, would be Ron Hodges: 12 NYM seasons while only twice (years 10 & 11) getting as many as 200 ABs, but Recker's never going to reach that status. Instead he'll be dumped as soon as some lefty-swinging backstop with a higher OBA shows up or when Plawecki is deemed ready.
  16. 17. MFS62 wrote: He was fifth or sixth in (combined) BA in the minors last year. (As per BA). And that BA, in his 2nd full year in pro ball, was 118 points above his 1st year BA, begging the question: which year is the norm and which the outlier? The answer probably lies somewhere in between. Then, going beyond BA, the walk rate (.062) was a shade below average and his power a bit more than a shade - especially as most of his XBHs in 2014 came while he was at Vegas's hitting-happy environment (25 XBHs at AAA vs just 9 at AA despite a near equal number of ABs) Bottom line: 2014 was a nice year for Reynolds but I still don't think we know what we have in him yet.
  18. I don't think he makes the team as a bench player - which means he doesn't make the team. Or at least not initially. Obviously what happens at SS depends a whole lot on how the great Flores experiment goes. But until that sorts itself out (in one fashion or another) he'll get everyday work in Vegas waiting for a change in Queens.
  19. And it looks like they needed those extra runs. Top 9: Dario Alvarez ... Not Good (and not good timing for a LHR to be Not Good). Carlos Torres ... Not Good (served up a granny) 5 in, 1 on, still just 1 out 11-9 Mets
  20. And suddenly the Mets put up a [crossout]six[/crossout] nine run 8th (off [crossout]some[/crossout] ^several^ scrap-heap hurlers)

  22. "One player is free to make public issue of his openly homosexual lifestyle - a matter of moral consequence - while another player is reprimanded for expressing his religious belief that the homosexual lifestyle is immoral." I missed the part where Murphy was reprimanded.
  23. The best thing he's got going for him (in addition to the out of options thing) is that he serves as Granderson insurance, as Cuddyer insurance, as Lagares insurance, and, by extension, as Duda insurance (he won't play 1B if Duda gets hurt and/or suxx but Cuddyer will and Nieuwy moves in that way). I think most folks are focusing on Granderson and Cuddyer but there's at least as good a chance that Lagares won't hit enough to maintain an everyday spot in the lineup. Looking forward to seeing the two-headed monster of Nieuwenhuis & Mayberry put some points on the board this summer ... and not just on the SCRABBLE board. At worst, it's been a while since we had a bench tandem with the ability to make the opposing manager have to juggle his bullpen if not soil his shorts in the late innings of a game.
  24. The games that MLBN carries at this time of year are ones where they're merely picking up whatever local feed is televising the game back home so I assume the equipment, like the personnel, belongs to the individual channels as well.
  25. If I, for some reason, didn't have an asshole, I'd be in the front of the line demanding one.
