] Mets part ways with Franco BY KEN DAVIDOFF ken.davidoff@newsday.com The Mets are expected to remove Julio Franco from their roster today to make room for Lastings Milledge, Newsday has learned. An announcement will be made before today's game. It's not clear whether Franco, who turns 48 next month, will retire, or whether he'll accept an unconditional release and try to find a job elsewhere. In his second season with the Mets, Franco has 10 hits, including one homer, in 50 at-bats, for a .200 batting average. He has recorded a .328 on-base percentage and an anemic .260 slugging percentage. He has essentially served as a player-coach, providing guidance for the Mets' younger players. But with the Mets' offense struggling -- hitting coach Rick Down was fired last night, and Rickey Henderson will join the coaching staff today -- the club apparently decided that it could no longer use a roster spot on Franco. The Mets signed Franco to a two-year, $2-million contract prior to the 2006 season.

I would think Kiner and Feller must be friends,I can't imagine Feller at his age coming to NY to pay tribute otherwise.All those years going to the HOF too. From Mets.com ] Seaver, along with Yogi Berra, Bob Feller and a cast of Mets legends will help honor Kiner before the game with the Reds. On-field ceremonies start at 7 p.m. ET, with the game pushed back to 7:30 to accommodate the tribute. The first 25,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative Kiner photo, courtesy of Mets-Steiner Collectibles.

Really I think coaching roles should be defined ,the way this is reading will lead to more questions and confusion,will Henderson be with the team every day,what happens when he and Hojo have different opinions on how to help whatever player needs help..... Perhaps I am over reacting but I don't like this.

Confusing.......from Mets.com ] NEW YORK -- The impatience -- and relative lack of productivity -- of Mets hitters seemingly led to impatience with hitting coach Rick Down. New York has dismissed Down and hired a man known for his patience at the plate. Rickey Henderson is in place to help invigorate the offense, though Howard Johnson and not Henderson will assume most or all of Down's responsibilities.

I liked how Rick never wore his Mets jacket when he went to the plate to help a hitter during a game. Seriously I wish him well,has to be one of the worst jobs when a team is not hitting,I remember a few in game interviews he gave,seemed like a decent sort.

Premiered last night on HBO. The Ghosts Of Flatbush I absolutely loved this documentary,don't know that it presented anything new on the story but with no game last night this was a perfect tonic. Had wonderful interviews with Duke Snider, Carl Erskine, Clem Labine and Johnny Podres; former Dodgers general manager Emil J. "Buzzie" Bavasi; former Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley and Rachel Robinson among others. I thought the documentary held O'Malley and Moses in equal fault for the team leaving,or the the least presented both sides of what happened. I got chills when it came to telling the story of game seven of the 1955 WS,listening to Podres talk about the game was so amazing,and to hear what that WS meant to those players and their fans then and today is special. HBO2 will show it tonight at 10:30PM. Liev Schreiber is an excellent narrator.

This will certainly get the players attention,I don't like to see a guy lose his job but I think this move could help...is this official ,because the Snooze says that maybe Hojo will be the hitting coach.

I'll give LaRussa credit for leaving Reyes in longer than any player,giving every chance at an MVP if things had worked differently,still not hitting Pujols was criminal.

Yeah I suppose it is,I should set the scene better. Reds sweep MFY's in the WS,Steinbrenner is furious in the owners box,storms down to the locker room looking for Billy,finds him alone and crying in his office(i think),for a second I thought Steinbrenner was going to comfort him but of course Steinbrenner lays the blame firmly on him with a " how could you do this to me"... -

I watched the Bronx is Burning......I dunno,thought Oliver Platt and John Turturro looked just goofy playing Steinbrenner and Martin,I wanted to laugh every time Platt/Steinbrenner huffed and puffed. When Steinbrenner approached Martin in the managers office after losing the 76 WS and vowed to never again be humiliated like that because" this is my team now" is sounded so fucking childish..
