Frayed Knot wrote: Keep in mind that ML teams generally don't own their minor league affiliates so it's not a case of MLB simply choosing to "make it happen". If Ottawa is ceasing operations it means that the local owners who have the Int'l Lg franchise are opting, for whatever reasons, not to continue it and another owner/group would have to strike a new franchise agreement with minor league baseball before going fishing for a new ML affiliate. For the same reason it's also not as simple as the Mets just choosing to transform Brooklyn into a AAA team. The owners (in this case the Wilpons) don't have a AAA franchise. Good point,in fact I think there might be one ownership group that owns a lot of minor league teams.

  8. A Boy Named Seo wrote: ="OlerudOwned"]Keith Hernandez and Kurt Vonnegut being neighbors. Wow. How'd that come up? Keith was talking about the Mets answering the bell and then Gary started using different metaphors so Keith said they need Vonnegut in the booth, mentioned that they were neighbors and used to meet all the time. Did Keith call the yankees "the stankees' then said he was joking?

  17. ] Mets' Pedro will have his limits for Monday start BY DAVID LENNON | david.lennon@newsday.com The Mets gave their rubber-stamp approval yesterday for Pedro Martinez to start tomorrow against the Reds. The agreement, however, included a few lines of fine print. He will be limited to 75 pitches in his first start for the Mets since Sept. 27 of last year, and he can throw no more than 35 in an inning. The front office is taking no chances after his 11-month rehab from rotator-cuff surgery. Just call this outing Pedro Lite. "That was made clear to me before I took the mound," Martinez said. "For a guy like me who has been around for so long, it's hard, actually, to obey that rule. They want the best for the team and I have to agree to that." The Mets' plan to keep a tight leash on Martinez is reminiscent of what the Yankees did with David Cone in his 1996 return from aneurysm surgery. Cone had a no-hitter going against the A's when he was lifted after seven. Would Martinez do the same? "I'm going to have to," he said. " ... I already gave my word." Martinez awoke with no problems after Friday's 64-pitch bullpen session, but he was wrapped like King Tut when he emerged from the trainer's room yesterday. He had one heating pack draped around his stiff neck and another hanging from his right hip. They served as a reminder that Martinez, despite a relatively smooth rehabilitation, is 35 with 2,645 innings thrown. He also pointed out that he's built his career on nothing stronger than Advil. He tried to temper the large expectations and wants emotions out of it. "I believe I'm young enough to survive this and do it for a few more years," he said. "If I'm healthy like I'm expecting to be, hopefully I'll live up to my contract and hopefully put up some numbers. Help this team make it to the World Series and win it." More articles
