    Third

We now know what Kiner thinks Kiner blasts Reyes batting third Ralph Kiner was in the broadcast booth this afternoon and was highly critical of Jose Reyes' placement in the batting order. He said the shortstop is ``not a third place hitter in any regards.'' When Gary Cohen asked him who should bat third, Kiner responded, ``There's the answer right there, we don't have one.'' Keith Hernandez added some levity, suggesting the dead guy from ``Weekend at Bernie's.'' Kiner was pictured wearing sunglasses (saying he just returned from Florida) and talked about the cold, damp day in New York. He said in his playing days hitters would ``hold their bats over briquettes.' Kids, don't try that at home. Especially with aluminum.
  3. This is such a bullshit story.....I wish it away.

You've got a great point. I flagged during the hockey strike. The loss is mine. Actually the 3rd period was not a humdinger..... Montreal just ate them up....hoping they go all the way.

(Or, rather, that I enjoyed the result?) -- That Desmond error? Huge. But I like him with the glove aside from that... and he's better with the bat. He seems like he may be around a while. I coming to the conclusion that Reyes is not smart enough to hit third. I don't say that lightly , he has the talent but I don't think he has the brain for it. I don't know if I'd word it that way, but I think I agree. To go further, I think he looks way smarter (or less confused) batting leadoff. He definitely handles himself at the plate like he's talked himself into being a different sort of hitter. I find myself wishing that one could hypnotize him into taking the same approach he did over the last three years to the #3 slot. I wonder if a move to #2 would help. Maybe the "contact" slot means that he's more judicious about making non-power-type contact... Which brings me to a thing that applies to Jose, but isn't Jose-exclusive: I'm not sure if it's HoJo (preaching aggression?), but it seems like a LOT of players are swinging through pitches in the zone AND chasing stuff outside of it. As I've been hipdeep in formula and Huggies, I haven't gotten hipdeep in the Fangraphs swing numbers, but I'm thinking they have to bear this out. This thread is getting of point but here is part of my problem and maybe Reyes too.....the whole move was botched to begin with....a move down in the order nearly turned into Piazza moving to first base, except here we had weeks of speculation that turned turned in to a "will he , won't he" be hitting third. Manuel then tells Jose to change nothing , to go up there with the same mentality he has hitting first, yet people like Keith and Joe Morgan who know hitting say that's it's different and the player needs to adjust. Reyes looks completely lost , and another thing too. Manuel talks about Bay and says things like "well I never saw him before so I don't know what to tell him to get things going"....you fucking kidding me... watch a video ...OK so those are not his exact words but the point was that having never coached Bay he's lost in how to help him.

  10. Wilpon, Wang talk about moving Islanders to Queens Jeff Wilpon, the Mets' chief operating officer, said Tuesday he has talked with Islanders owner Charles Wang about building an arena in Queens as a possible home for the hockey team. Wilpon told Newsday in an exclusive interview that he has had recent discussions with Wang about relocating the team to a new Queens arena and also said that it remains a possibility that he could buy the team. "I've had conversations with Charles," Wilpon said by phone Tuesday, "and we've talked about Queens. We'd like to be helpful and I think Queens is an option. We built Citi Field well under budget and on time. I have all my guys ready. "We haven't really discussed ownership. It has been more of, 'Can we get something synergistic with Citi Field and a hockey arena, what can happen here?' " Although the majority of their conversations have focused on building a new arena, Wilpon has not ruled out the possibility of owning the Islanders. Wang has lost an average of $23 million a year since buying the team 10 years ago and is impatient with the pace of the proposed Lighthouse Project. With the Town of Hempstead attempting to downsize Lighthouse development plans and Wang frustrated by the additional time and money it would cost to scale it back, the two sides have failed to come to an agreement. Still, Nassau officials say they would like the team to remain in the county. "We are working hard to keep the Islanders in Nassau County," County Executive Edward Mangano said Tuesday. A modified development plan is expected to be presented at some point this summer, Hempstead Town officials said. In addition to the potential landing spots for the Islanders, there has been speculation that Wang, who did not return calls seeking comment, might turn to the National Hockey League for assistance and ask the league to take a controlling interest in the team. "Totally and uncategorically untrue," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in an e-mail to Newsday. The Wilpon-Wang connection, however, sheds new light on the team's situation. Wilpon said he has been in touch with Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber about bringing a soccer facility to the area as well, although the likelihood of building both a hockey and soccer venue looks slim. "We probably can't do both," Wilpon said. "We just need to look at what could be done, as diverse as it is." "We've had numerous discussions with Charles [Wang] and with Don Garber about soccer as well. We've been in touch, talking to Charles about what can be done synergistically with all of his technological [assets]. He likes the market here and they have all been positive conversations with him." While the dialogue between Wilpon and Wang is an encouraging sign to Islanders fans who would like to see the team stay in New York rather than relocating to Kansas City or a Canadian locale, nothing is imminent. "We are certainly willing and able and happy to work with Mr. Wilpon, but we have not heard any concrete plan as of today of bringing the Islanders into Queens," Queens Borough President Helen Marshall said. "It has to be real." Wilpon said in the interview he, Wang and Garber are talking. "It wouldn't be fair to say we have made any verbal agreements or even a handshake agreement, but we're definitely in the exploratory phase with both of them," Wilpon said. 15. Ken has some thoughts... Davidoff: Help is on the way for Mets, and they need more of it After an ugly 3-2 loss to the Nationals Monday night at Citi Field, a rare instance this season in which the Mets beat themselves, Jerry Manuel announced a necessary personnel change to his club. Smithtown's Frank Catalanotto, a great guy who just didn't show much as a Mets bench player, is out, designated for assignment. Chris Carter, who had been tearing up the International League at Triple-A Buffalo, will join the team tonight in an effort to improve the bench. It's a good first step, but there are two other moves the Mets (17-15) - who fell a game behind second-place Washington (18-14) in the National League East with the loss - should make right now. And if they really want to contend for a postseason spot, rather than just lurk in the periphery of postseason conversation, they should make larger moves once other teams have real interest in trades. The Mets were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position Monday night, and afterward, we heard much about how they are pressing. Manuel said his players will "continue to work, continue to talk about it, continue to get after it." The truth, though, is that the Mets need help. Sure, they should have something coming from Jose Reyes and Jason Bay. Yet Rod Barajas will slow down on the power front, and Jeff Francoeur already is regressing toward the sort of numbers that prompted the Braves to give up on him. The Mets lowered their payroll during the offseason, acquiring Bay and doing little else, because they professed they saw no other clear upgrades. And they promised they'd have more in-season flexibility to make moves - the sort of moves they largely did not make during the lost seasons of 2007 and 2008. Replacing Willie Randolph with Manuel in '08 felt like a huge maneuver, yet the biggest trade came when Luis Castillo came over from the Twins in '07. So if Seattle makes Cliff Lee available, the Mets should be all over that. They have a deeper farm system now, giving them more trade chips, and they can replenish it (if they trade someone) with the seventh overall pick in this upcoming draft, as long as they're willing to pay more than Major League Baseball's slotted figure. And if an outfield bat becomes available - shoot, even Kansas City's Jose Guillen, if the Royals express a willingness to pay enough of the freight - the Mets should consider that, too. Right now, though, with the Carter-for-Catalanotto swap executed, the Mets should . . . 1. Release Gary Matthews Jr. As expected, he hasn't been the best addition for the Mets. Manuel called upon Matthews as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning with Mets on first and third and none out. Matthews struck out against Doug Slaten. The Mets should let him go and bring up another pitcher or Buffalo slugger Mike Hessman. It's time to admit that getting Matthews was a mistake. 2. Prepare Jenrry Mejia to be a starter. Yup, again. Ollie Perez is too inconsistent and John Maine, though better lately, lives on the edge. The Mets could wind up needing to replace both. If it's Mejia and an outsider - Lee, Baltimore's Kevin Millwood, Houston's Roy Oswalt or someone else - then that's pretty good. These Mets fight. They can hang around. To do more than that, though, they need help.
