My favorite thing about Recker is that he rocks the old school catcher's mask. Nice throw out. -

That was a nice catch for EY and Mejia had a great inning. Let's score some runs! -
I guess if I were Terry I would have left Parnell behind in PSL until he could come close to hitting triple digits like he had in the past. Even if Parnell says he's healthy, it would be obvious to me that if he wasn't hurt he would need more time to get his velocity back up. Again, would this have saved Parnell from the DL? Probably not...but I'm not sure what the reasoning was for bringing him north other than a lack of options and a whole lot of hope that everything was OK despite warning signs. Same with Young. I would have made him sprint from his position to the foul pole five times in a row with me watching him in the outfield during BP. Maybe he did something similar and Young passed the test, but it surprises me that the very first time Young ran in a game situation he pulled up limping. His situation was one where one or two more days of healing might have saved him a trip to the DL. There is also the issue of how much he can trust his players now that two of them have basically tried to cover up injuries. I understand why athletes do this, but part of being a good manager seems to me to be the ability to establish a certain level of trust that helps prevent these situations from occurring.

Ceetar wrote: Parnell didn't report the pain until after Opening Day. Granted their were alarm bells, but you don't just send guys for tests if they're not reporting pain. His velocity was WAY down prior to Opening Day, which should be the #1 alarm that pain is not being reported. Ceetar wrote: Chris Young probably passed the tests. He was scratched OD but probably precautionary. Then he ran hard for a fly ball and didn't make it to the bottom of the inning. It's just hard for me to believe that Young passed any tests without running hard. What kind of tests would they be if they didn't simulate game situations? The first game situation he was put into caused him to hit the DL. Ceetar wrote: But this isn't on Terry. Guys are on the roster and say they can go, they go. It's Sandy's job to DL/hold back guys. Where does the buck stop? The guys on the roster are running the show? I disagree that it is all (or even mostly) on Sandy to diagnose injuries. Anything happening on the field during the game should be on Terry.

The difference with DeNiro is that he barely seems to be trying. His output these days seems to be either small roles in larger films where he doesn't have to work too hard or carry the load, to just awful 'Meet the Fokkers' kind of stuff that's so far beneath him you wonder why he bothers. I'd guess this is why he bothers: But, yes, he could be trying harder.

I don't think Terry is going anywhere this season, but I've already seen some alarming things through three games in addition to the Tejada-plate play. Neither Parnell nor C. Young should have been playing in a regular season MLB game. Some of the blame may be on the players masking the severity of their injuries and some of the blame may go to the medical/training staff for not properly diagnosing these injuries. But Terry is ultimately in charge of making sure his players are ready to play and/or making the proper roster moves accordingly. Now we have two cogs in the 2014 wheel on the DL...one for at least 6 weeks and possibly out for the year. Could Terry have prevented these injures? Probably not...but he should have been able to keep these obviously (to me anyway) still injured players off the field. I don't have too many gripes about Terry's in game chops (though, I probably would have pinch hit for Colon in the 5th inning of game 2. I understand that Terry is playing to his strengths (starting pitching) and away from his weaknesses (bullpen), but I feel he punted on an opportunity there). I also can't make too much of 3 games...but some systemic problems from years past are evident: too many strikeouts and not winning at home. My win total expectations for 2014 are not that high, but I would like to see some obvious improvements as I feel the rotation in 2015 and beyond has the potential to be very special. But the rotation won't matter if Terry can't help turn some of the young offensive players we have into consistent everyday starters. Tejada and Davis have regressed over the past 3 years while Wright, Murph and Duda have been more or less consistent. I'm hoping d'Arnaud or Lagares can have a breakthrough year to give some young hope on the offensive side of the ball to go along with the rotation of the future. I understand that he has not had a lot of talent in the past (and I shudder to think what the Mets record would look like without the contributions of Dickey in 2012 or Harvey in 2013), but I think he's got a bit more to work with this season and would like to see some steps forward (especially on offense) in looking to the future. 90 win is fun rhetoric, but I'd be pretty happy if he could just finally get to 80.

metsmarathon wrote: i can't even believe this is an issue. seriously cannot fucking believe it. when minimm was born, i took a month off work. you know why? because i could. when mml&r were born, guess what? i took another month off. you know why? because i could. i had the available leave and the flexibility in my workpalce allowed it. i'm super thankful for it. and i wish i could've taken more time off. you know why? because i'm a man, a father, a husband, and I AM A MAN. but what is a man? is a man just a meatbag with a hairy penis? is that all that makes me a man? a y-chromosome and 18 years under my belt? no. a man is a MAN. he is a provider for his family, and its protector. (allow me to dive off hte deep end of societal stereotyping and mookery here. men are so much more and so much less than that. but i cannot assault the argument without first fully embracing it). that's what a man does. that's what a man is. a man who does not provide for and protect his family is no man at all. amirite? well, once we've got that nonsense out of the way. let me ask a question. how exactly does one provide for his family? what does that even mean? is it just money? is that all i do? make money, give it to the family, and then my manly responsibilities are fulfilled? of course not. a man must provide love and support to his family. and when does a family need more love and support than when a new child is born into it? the babies need love. the mother just pushed a watermelon out of her (or had it cut out of her freaking abdomen!). your watermelon! you think she doesn't need love? babies are helpless. do they not need support? does that watermelon-producer not also need support, to the best and utmost of your abilities? and what of protecting the family? by loving and supporting hte mother and new babies, a man also protects his family proactively. protect the family from undue stress and difficulty, and also to a lesser extent from whackadoodle inlaws. a man protects his family from dangers not only physical, but also mental and emotional. and when are families more emotionally and mentally stressed than when a new child is born into it? no, manly man, your provisions and protections extend beyond a paycheck and a smelly armpit, especially when you are able. now, mind you, if a family is so fully dependent upon the paycheck of the man, then it is the man's obligation to find hte proper balance, for to forego pay altogether to be there for a new child can be counter-productive. so a family that's living paycheck to paycheck, more or less, may have to sacrifice the time the man spends with the new baby. but lets be real. the murphys are not in any way living paycheck to paycheck. daniel murphy is making $5.7M this year, and while i don't know if paternity leave is paid or not, even if its not paid, he'll undoubtedly be just fine. and while he's not yet reached his free agent years and has not yet gotten a long term contract, his job is fairly safe, and he may look forward to a decent major league career with tens of millions of dollars in salary over its course. he's already cleared the bar of providing for his family, financially. taking a month off may not be adviseable for him, in that it would then become detrimental to his career and also to his team. but three days is an exceedingly small drop in the bucket. moreover, and importantly, he is entitled to taking three days off. his union has won that provision and it is his to use. and use it he should. to not use it would be to not provide for his family, as the exceedingly small financial and career benefit does not outweigh the emotional and mental and physical benefit of him being with his new family for htose three scant days. a pro football player might not have the flexibility to miss a game or three following the birth of a child, as his season is shorter, his contract is not guaranteed, his career is more fleeting, the loss of a game check more pronounced, and hte threat of replacement on the depth charts more immediate. especially for a marginal player. but for an established major league baseball player? please. surely there are those who were unable to avail themselves of any such provision in their own lives, and who had to make the sacrifice of not being there for their newborn child because their own financial situation outweighed or threatened to outweigh the benefit of being there, but they should not begrudge him his luck and his success. and for mike francessa to begrudge him is preposterous. fuck that noise. fuck it right in the neck. Bravo!

Just TRY to get some baseball news out of ESPN ...
TransMonk replied to Frayed Knot's topic in New York Mets Talk
Other than watching actual games, I don't use the TV to get sports news anymore. The internet is the best place to get the news you want because you can ignore what you don't care about. If I want to see specific highlights at a place other than home, I check my phone. ESPN (and any other networks) are the equal to FOX News or MSNBC. They have a money making agenda targeted at a specific audience (that I have decided I am not a part of). -
Closer by committee? I'd like to see what Familia can do...but wouldn't be opposed to giving Valverde a look too.

I like the aggressive approach of swinging at the first pitch the Mets have shown today. I know it is not going to work all the time, but when you know what's likely to come, put it in play.
