  1. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=130282 time=1688067301 user_id=68] Let's be concrete. What should the Mets expect for paying Scherzer's $65M? He's still a 40+ year old pitcher in decline. How fast he declines is anybody's guess but the decline is inevitable and a 40+ year old pitcher is closer to his decline than a 30 year old pitcher. So let's be concrete. And consider not only what the Mets should expect but what some other team would be willing to give up to maybe, just maybe, be the last playoff seed. So who would that be? Someone like Jon Niese? The 1983 version of Tom Seaver? If Seaver, then the Mets might as well keep Scherzer, who isn't Juan Soto anymore. Well, I guess it'll be a prospect. Otherwise, what's the point of trading one pitcher well into career for another?

  3. If angry, sarcastic-laden but well-written Mets recaps that also incorporate the words "fuck" and "horseshit" are your thing, (they're definitely mine) --- then Jason Fry's your man. http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2023/06/26/i-hate-this-team/http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2023/06/26/i-hate-this-team/ The streak continues. "Horseshit" is worked into Jason Fry's second straight Mets piece. And I'm loving it. http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2023/06/28/theres-the-numbness-i-hadnt-been-missing/http://www.faithandfearinflushing.com/2023/06/28/theres-the-numbness-i-hadnt-been-missing/
  4. Not one, but two great prospects for Scherzer? And when almost half the teams make the playoffs? What Bizarro alternate universe did I slip into? [FIMG=444]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/wKYAAOSwlAljcsoq/s-l1600.jpg[/FIMG]
  5. Immaculate Grid 87 8/9: 🟩⬜️🟩 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 Eight out of nine. One of the cells stumped me to the point that I didn't even bother to take a guess. The expansion teams are gonna be my weakness in this game. Oh, and I took a gamble on Rusty Staub and it turns out that Expos are accepted for the Nats logo boxes --- as it should be. Angels/Nats: Tim Foli (0.06%) Angels/Marlins: ? Angels/20W season: Dean Chance (0.8%) Cubs/Nats: Larry Biitner (0.009%) <-------- That's three digits to the right of the decimal point! Cubs/Marlins: Moises Alou (7%) Cubs/20W season: Fergie Jenkins (21%) Mets/Nats: Rusty Staub (0.2%) Mets/Marlins: Dave Magadan (0.07%) Mets/20W season: R.A. Dickey (13%)
  6. No way Ohtani comes here to play next season.
  7. =ashie62 post_id=130187 time=1687991166 user_id=90] Ultimately Steve wants to flip the team for a profit someday.
  8. Thanks, guys. That's pretty much what I expected.
  9. Any word on this? I caught some of the web streams and the sound was practically inaudible. I mean, I could hear the questions but not so much Cohen. He might as well have been talking from a soundproofed isolation chamber with six feet thick walls. I couldn't get to a TV so I don't know if the TV sound was any better.
  10. Immaculate Grid 86 9/9: IMMACULATE! 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 A's/Orioles- Reggie Jackson (13%) A's/Twins - Phil Roof (0.02%!) <----------- A's/3,000 hits - Rickey Henderson (95%) Padres/Orioles - Merv Rettenmund (0.07%!) <----------- Padres/Twins - Bob Miller (0.02!) <----------- Padres/3,000 hits - Tony Gwynn (95%) 500 HR's/Orioles - Frank Robinson (23%) 500 HR's/Twins - Harmon Killebrew (51%) 500 HR's/3,000 hits - Willie Mays (8%) <-------------- We're definitely getting old. 11. Here are the most popular correct answers for each box in this puzzle: Royals/Red Sox: Andrew Benitendi -- (50%) Royals/Cleveland: Carlos Santana -- (50%) Royals 200k: Zach Greinke -- (97%) Mariners/Red Sox: James Paxton -- (39%) Mariners/Cleveland: Carlos Santana -- (23%) Mariners 200k: Felix Hernandez -- (58%) Rangers/Red Sox: Nathan Eovaldi -- (28%) Rangers/Cleveland: Corey Kluber -- (26%) Rangers 200k: Nolan Ryan -- (87%) The Royals/Cleveland box was the toughest to solve -- only 53% of players had a correct answer for it.

  17. Frayed Knot wrote: =batmagadanleadoff post_id=129956 time=1687823504 user_id=68] Yes, but Pythag is theoretical, and so it necessarily has a margin of error. So if Pythag says the Mets are under performing by two games, it might by three. Or five. Or eight. Or fewer than two.
  18. The A's undid all of the good they did two weeks ago. They've lost their last nine of 10 and are now exactly at .250 (20-60). They play the Yanks right now.
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: The Mets Pythag projection for the season overall lists them as 'deserving to be' two games better than they currently are ... so I don't think "very unlucky" is quite accurate. Yes, but Pythag is theoretical, and so it necessarily has a margin of error. So if Pythag says the Mets are under performing by two games, it might by three. Or five. Or eight. But mainly, I'm not trying to dismiss the Mets flaws this season. Their record-breaking and now mocked historic payroll includes a large chunk allotted for superstar reliever Edwin Diaz, who's lost for this season. And they've gotten no starting pitching this year, which is bad in and of itself, but also puts a strain on the already compromised bullpen. The team has problems. But they might be very unlucky, just as well.
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Well the upshot is that you can be both sucky and unlucky at the same time. Mags' point is that a team playing three-plus weeks of baseball who get out-scored in the aggregate by essentially an 11-to-10 ratio is unlikely to lose 72% of those games. Yes! That's my point! And that the Mets are displaying bad baseball doesn''t mean that they're not also very unlucky. Demonstrating bad baseball doesn't disprove that the Mets might be unlucky. Because ... you know ... you can be both bad and unlucky. Ideally, the luck would even out, except that it doesn't. And if the Mets truly are very unlucky this season, you'd think that average luck would've swung at least four or five losses in the Mets favor, and then the whole narrative would be entirely different.
  21. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: =batmagadanleadoff post_id=129891 time=1687786611 user_id=68] What all of that tells me is that the Mets have been very unlucky. Which is a narrative that makes sense to me. The roster is much better than the WL record, I'd say. I'd say they've sucked at executing more than they've been unlucky. They just aren't playing well enough to win.

  23. =Fman99 post_id=129878 time=1687774910 user_id=86] I got 8 of 9 today, still have not gotten the entire grid. Stupid mistake, too, picking Kershaw as a Dodger with 3000 Ks with other obvious choices available to me.
  24. First time I played officially. I should have swept the board but I only got 8 out of 9, because I didn't know all of the rules and so I was penalized one guess. Maybe youse don't know this rule that tripped me up, either. If so, this'll be a lesson. Here's what happened: I was studying the grid and noticed that Joe Morgan was a correct answer to five of the nine boxes. So I thought I'd answer Morgan wherever appropriate. But when I tried to enter Morgan a second time, I got a message that I had already used Morgan and was docked one guess. So I was only allowed to make eight guesses. Apparently, you're not allowed to repeat a player in a given game. Here's how I did: Reds-Astros: Joe Morgan (46%) Reds-Giants: George Foster (1%) Reds-MVP: Johnny Bench (18%) Pirates-Astros: Milt May (0.04%!) Pirates-Giants: Rick Reuschel (0.3%) Pirates-MVP: Dick Groat (0.6%) 30 SB-Astros: BLOCKED -- (Would've answered Cesar Cedeno if not Morgan) 30 SB-Giants: Bobby Bonds (9%) 30 SB-MVP: Maury Wills (0.6%)
