  3. Yeah , I noticed this a while ago. Its awful now with the pop-up ads and pop-up videos and then even more pop-ups after you remove the first wave of pop-ups.

  6. This one was a disaster. I got four right. And two wrong. And then I just quit. Sometimes, I'm like the '62 Mets, finding new ways to lose that I never thought were possible. [FIMG=488]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53035652218_b4a263fae0_b.jpg[/FIMG] Here's what happened: I started off with Bevacqua. I'm finding that my favorite answers here have rarity scores of under one percent and are of players for which there are no pictures. Bevacqua! Then I went for some low-hanging fruit -- the gimmees -- Wilson and Molitor. Three for three. Perfect so far. And then the troubles started. For Rangers/Nats, I typed in Jeff Burroughs. This answer was not accepted. I didn't know why. Burroughs was a no-doubter. '74 AL MVP with the Rangers. And then there was that '77 Sporting News cover of Burroughs with the Braves that for reasons unknown, I held onto for like two years. Burroughs was a Brave. What was going on with Immaculate Grid? It's not as if I already entered Burroughs for another answer to this game. I already made that mistake with Joe Morgan about a week ago and learned from that mistake. It's not as if there were two different Jeff Burroughs and I clicked on the other one. Made that mistake with Boog Powell and learned to be more careful. So what? Here's what: The Nats used to be the Expos. Not the Braves. I had conflated the Braves for the team that the Nats originated from -- the Expos. What a screw-up. OK. So moving on, I filled in Rollie Fingers for Brewers/Padres. And then for Royals/Nats - Ray Sadecki. Wrong answer! WTF? Sadecki was a Royal, and briefly a Brave. There was no Topps card of Sadecki as a Brave but I had made a custom Brave Sadecki card years ago. It was one of the first cards I ever made. So I knew that Sadecki was once a Brave. Turns out, I did it again. I made the same mistake I made with Buroughs, conflating Braves with Expos. Unbelievable. So I lost the mood to finish the game and just quit.

If we could factor in 2023-quality defensive metrics, that might well close the gap considerably. You're preaching to the choir.

  9. Edgy MD wrote: , but how does one deny a chance to give Olerud's 1998 its due? Because 1998 was smack in the middle of the steroids era and Olerud was competing against cartoonishly beefed-up home run mashers like Bagwell, Galarraga and especially McGwire, who hit 70 HRs that year and dominated the news cycle, along with Sosa. I remember it well. Chicks always did dig the long ball.
  10. I think that this was my favorite game of the year. I only saw the 9th inning, though. First I went to the ESPN "scores" app to see what I missed and saw that Senga pitched a goddamn gem. Then came the heroics with the Mets down to their last strike. That Alvarez is a beast -- he's strong. I wonder who's stronger: him or Alonso?

  12. Those kids in the band in the 1 877 Kars4Kids commercial are the most spastic kid actors I've ever seen. And the worst actors, too. No doubt, their parents ran that commercial and that's how they got that gig, [media=youtube]F94DBBJjzko[/media]

Ducks where he racked up a .331/.410/.451 line. And y'know Mike Trout is on the shelf for a while. Just sayin' Murph retired three years ago, when he was "just" 35. Pretty young age to retire from the show for a player of his caliber, barring injuries that prevent a player from playing at major-league level.
  14. I gave up. My first answer (which was for Oriole/Indian) was Boog Powell. I wasn't given proper credit and was docked a guess. I tried again. Still, no go. I couldn't figure out what the fuck was going on. This was a no-doubter. Horseshit, I called. I mean, who could forget Boog in those all-beet-red top to bottom Cleveland mid 70s unis? Fucking Boog looked like a goddamn fire truck in those threads. [FIMG=333]http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LsXQWZ3AHUo/TsBzNNo9gxI/AAAAAAAABFw/IMqeawNjljA/s400/1975%2BBoog%2BPowell%2BTopps.png[/FIMG] Turns out there were two different Boog Powells. I was clicking on the other one. So I quit. Fuck that.
  15. I think that the issue here is that every team must be represented at the ASG. Otherwise, the Mets probably wouldn't have a selection at all this year, especially when an All-Star is determined almost entirely by performance over the first half of the season in question. I also think that Nimmo's having a better season than Alonso. Pete's 20+ HR's are awesome but he's making way too many damn outs. Rate-wise, though, no Met has been better than Pham, so far.
  16. =nymr83 post_id=130729 time=1688417195 user_id=54] today was the first time i saw this. is the goal to pick players with the lowest % you can guess they'll have?
  17. Rickey Henderson was the first player that came to me for 200 hits/A's. But I doubted he'd ever gotten 200 hits in a season what with the number of walks he typically drew in a season. If he ever did get 200 hits in a season, I figgered his OBP would be at .500 or close to it for that season. So I went with Nap Lajoie instead. Immaculate. More on the Mets likely pursuit of Ohtani from The Athletic: Rosenthal: If Mets sell at trade deadline, options range from the obvious to the extreme Excerpt: One other point to consider: If the Mets are serious about landing Shohei Ohtani -- and with Cohen, why wouldn't they be? -- they will need to present the two-way sensation with a coherent vision of how they intend to win. A five year plan is not going to entice Ohtani, and Cohen also wants no part of such a thing, having said upon taking over as owner in Nov. 2020 that he expected a championship in 3 to 5 years. [***] Ohtani would not want to join this version of the Mets, not when he will have other lucrative options. __________ Also: If aging Mets are bad now, what does it mean for 2024? β€˜Not a great place to be' Excerpt: NEW YORK β€” A losing season reverberates, its consequences rippling out into the future in ways unpredictable. For the Mets, their wholly disappointing first half of 2023, which continued in a 5-2 loss to the Brewers Wednesday, doesn't just limit their chances to play October baseball this season. It also calls into question their long-term roster construction and the strategy that led to it. New York is already the oldest team in baseball, and most of that age is slated to return next season. The Mets are paying players 32 and older roughly $186 million this season (not counting salaries for Robinson CanΓ³ and James McCann). They're already scheduled to pay such players $153 million next year. If that core looks like this in 2023, should they expect it to be any better in 2024? β€œIf it turns out we don't improve, and we're looking at '24, let's say we're with a similar team and one year older, for a veteran team, that's probably not a great place to be,” owner Steve Cohen said during his wide-ranging press conference on Wednesday. β€œI mean, it could get better. But it may not. We have to make those judgments.” https://theathletic.com/4650402/2023/06/29/mets-struggles-2024-roster/https://theathletic.com/4650402/2023/06/29/mets-struggles-2024-roster/
  21. Eight out of nine. I whiffed on the same cell that Grimm also missed. Of my eight correct answers, the one that took me the longest to come up with was Pete Alonso (40HR season/ROY). Go figure. My rarest answer was Tiger/Phillie Jim Bunning (1%).
  22. He called Keith Hernandez a dinosaur and added three laughing-at-you emojis. He's foul.

  25. When he was traded, Tyler Mahle was a 26 year old pitcher coming off two straight seasons where he finished in the top 10 in numerous statistical pitching categories. And he was considered to have upside, being a 26 year old not yet reaching his actuarial baseball prime. So I wouldn't pooh-pooh him by calling him "Tyler Fucking Mahle" . This year, he started off about as dominant as any pitcher in all of baseball until he got injured. Scherzer is none of those things, despite being a sure-thing Hall-of-Famer.
