  1. Extra Credit. Name the Mets that are ranked 41 & 44-51 in this category. Hint: None of these Mets were guessed. 41. Jay Bell (195) (none as a Met) Edgy _________________________________ 42. One spot left on the board. Edgy clinched at least a tie for first place in the extra credit round. Only LWFS can tie Edgy.

To tell you the truth, I barely remember him. Did I ever tell you that in both the 2003 and 2004 seasons, (the Art Howe years) I became totally disinterested in the Mets right around the All-Star Break? I don't think I watched 10 games total, combining the second half of Howe's two full seasons. And I was a full season ticket holder during the Howe era. When I look at those rosters, there are some players that I can't even visualize. Eric Valent? Who the hell was he?
  3. I went over this list carefully. So it couldn't be that I skipped over Jay Bell's name. What happened is that I simply forgot that Jay Bell was ever a Met to begin with. FWIW, the reigning champion to this trivia contest, G-Fafif, also whiffed on Bell. I know this because he said that he peeked at the extra credit answers after the top 40 list was solved and saw that there was one "no HR's as a Met" in the extra credit round (Wilson). So I'm in good company. Unless G-Fafif remembered that Bell was a Met but thought that Bell hit at least one Met HR. That's a possibility.

  5. Oh boy. Now there's trouble. Because me, smartypants me, missed Jay Bell. And Bell hit 195 HR's. So now I have to revise the top 50 list. And tomorrow, we'll redo this extra credit portion of the trivia question all over again.

  8. But seriously, one of the remaining two answers is, I think, an obvious one. So obvious that I'm surprised no one submitted his name in the top 40 regular credit phase. Well. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/HR_career.shtml
  9. Most of these hints I'm hinting have to be misdirections: only two spots remain unsolved.
  10. Ken Henderson was a Met for 15 minutes. But he was a major leaguer for 16 seasons. In the four full seasons Ken played between 1970 and 1974 (he was injured in '73 and missed more than half of that season) Ken hit 70 HR's. That's more than half way to the top 50 in just four seasons.
  11. Tony Clark and Jeff Conine are in the top 40. This is the extra credit round, where forum members try to "guess" spots 43 -50. I skipped spots 41 (Otis) and 42 (Bay) because those were submitted as wrong answers in the top 40 phase of this tournament. I put the words "guess" in quotes. Guess why? Or, I should [crossout:10lkudjv]say[/crossout:10lkudjv] write: "Guess" why? The top 40 list was solved, collectively, in like 26 seconds, with no wrong answers. Not even John Milner. Here's the baseball reference link to baseball's all time career HR leaders if anybody wants to cheat. Not that I suspect such a thing. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/HR_career.shtml I'm posting this link because I know that no one will click on it prior to submitting any "guesses".
  12. In his first year as a Met, Bernard Gilkey clubbed 30 HR's. That's almost one fifth of the way to the top 50 on this trivial list right there. From one season. I'll post the rest of the list right after LunchBucket posts his rock and roll answers. Unless the list is solved by then. (As if no one's gonna solve the remaining answers. Jeff Conine.) And how come none of you cheaters guessed Ed Kranepool? A guy can't hit 160 HR's in 17 seasons?

  14. Mike Marshall hit 121 HR's from 1983 through 1988. Marshall's presence on the Mets kept Dave Magadan on Buddy's bench for more time than Mags ought to have sat. Magadan himself wasn't much of a HR hitter, but he did carve out a 16 year MLB career. Sometimes, slow and steady wins the race.
  15. Juan Samuel was a major leaguer for 16 seasons -- a Met for half a season. He hit 28 HR's in 1987. For whatever it's worth though, offense was up markedly in 1987.
  16. Jim Fregosi broke in as a teen-ager and had an 18 year MLB career. He hit 22 HR's in 1970 -- his one-season high.
  17. I wonder how many Primanti's sandwiches Donn downed when he had the Power in Pittsburgh?
  18. There's still two slots open. Milner could be one of them. Tommy Davis had a long career. So did Jim Hickman. He played in Wrigley, ya know. That's who I'd be thinking about if I was playing. Willie Montanez hit 30 HR's as a runner up 1971 ROY to Earl Williams (33 HR's). Today, writers considered Carlos Baerga's HOF worthiness.
  19. Edgy DC wrote: Talk about Barry Larkin instead. If he went to Cardinal Hayes or Bronx Science instead of Moeller, and gave those 18 years to the Yankees instead of the Reds, folks would be going nuts tonight. If Barry Larkin did all those things, he'da been in like Flynn already.

  23. Wouldn't that be punishing the Dodgers for their richer history? The HR's Piazza hit for the Dodgers weren't less significant than his Mets HR's just because Snider and Hodges and Campanella once played for Dodgers.
  24. Piazza's personal preferences notwithstanding, I think a reasonable case could be made for both the Mets and Dodgers. If I was an impartial HOF committee member deciding on Piazza's HOF plaque cap, I wouldn't consider Piazza's role in the Shea closing and CF opening ceremonies. That would be penalizing the Dodgers for not tearing down their beautiful stadium. And I wouldn't factor in the fact that Piazza's old Dodger uni # is still in circulation, either. Teams shouldn't have the ability to sway this decision. Do the Devil rays strengthen their case for a Tampa bay cap on Wade Boggs' head because they retired his uni #?
