  1. Kris Benson made $38 million through 2010 from MLB. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bensokr01.shtml What kind of business is he starting that he needs whatever deferred money is owed him from his Mets contract? Today's athletes might as well be from another planet compared to the rest of us.
  2. As a Mets memorabilia collector, I knew all along that the Shea seats were overpriced. I thought that in the past, the charm in owning stadium seats was due to the fact that most of the seats were destroyed and that relatively few people thought to obtain a seat. Ebbets Field and The Polo Grounds and even Yankee Stadium I were torn down when collecting baseball memorabilia was a fringe hobby. Fan interest in owning a stadium seat was a fraction of what it is today. But with Shea, and most of the other stadiums that were torn down recently in the midst of today's memorabilia craze, most of the seats were purposely preserved to be sold to collectors. With tens and tens of thousands of seats available, I knew that the original selling prices for those seats wouldn't hold. I picked up a Shea turnstile about a year ago. I think that the turnstile is way cooler than a seat. And as far as scarcity goes, there can't be more than two, maybe two and a half dozen turnstiles in existence. If that many.

My personal hunch is that Samuels was able to do what he did for as long as he did, not so much because Mets oversight was lax (it was) but mainly, because Mets brass really liked Samuels and had a soft or blind spot for him.
  5. I'm hoping for the best from Beltran. The little boy Mets fan inside of me tells me that Carlos could belt 40 HR's in 2011 just because he did that before. But if baseball records were actuarial tables, I'd say that Beltran's days of putting up all-star numbers are over and done with.

  13. Unless these relief pitcher hopefuls come with a killer knockout pitch, you might as well consult your coffee grind droppings to try and divine their future effectiveness. It's a total crap shoot from what I know, given the small sample size of innings they pitched. Thirty, 40, 50 innings is nothing to go on. Given the right -- or wrong -- 50 innings, Jonathon Niese might appear to be better than Koufax, while Johan Santana might make you wish that Oliver Perez, the bad Ollie, were starting, instead.
