  2. He looks like Phil Niekro. Not the active Phil Niekro: the Phil Niekro who attended old-timer's games 25 years after he retired.
  3. The Mets are a powerhouse and David Stearns is a superstar.
  4. Speaking of McNeil, Jayson Stark handed out his mid-season awards for The Athletic in the categories of MVP, Cy Young award, Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Cy Yuk award and LVP (the L is for "Least"). Only one Met made a showing in Stark's awards: Jeff McNeil finished third in his LVP rankings. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5632928/2024/07/12/mlb-awards-races-2024-midseason-judge-ohtani-skenes/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5632928/2024/07/12/mlb-awards-races-2024-midseason-judge-ohtani-skenes/
  5. On the heels of Paul Skenes' 11-strikeout performance with seven no-hit innings Thursday, the Pittsburgh Pirates star rookie was named the National League's All-Star Game starting pitcher Friday. Skenes will be the fifth rookie to start an All-Star Game in MLB history, joining Hideo Nomo (1995), Fernando Valenzuela (1981), Mark Fidrych (1976) and Dave Stenhouse (1962). Since making his major-league debut on May 11, Skenes is 6-0 with a 1.90 ERA with 89 strikeouts and just 14 runs allowed in 66 1/3 innings. His ERA would be first in the league and his 12.08 strikeouts per nine innings would be second-best if he pitched enough innings to qualify as a league leader. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5633934/2024/07/12/pirates-paul-skenes-all-star-game-starter/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5633934/2024/07/12/pirates-paul-skenes-all-star-game-starter/
  6. I remember Elmer Dessens , must be the name, looked him up, [2009] was his last MLB season ,this from Wikipedia New York Mets In February 2009, Dessens signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets.[6] Dessens made his Mets debut on June 23, 2009, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He was designated for assignment on July 30. He had his contract purchased on August 6, 2009, when Jon Niese was placed on the 60-day disabled list. In December 2009, Dessens signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets for the 2010 season. 2010 was Dessens' last Mets season. 7. Epilogue: Francoeur's first season with the Mets, rate-wise, was the best season of his career.
  8. I miss the days when Ceetar would post and sheer chaos would follow. "I think Swanny killed a guy with a trident" and "Walks less than a paraplegic". Oh my!
  9. I've thought about that too. Pete's going to want an awfully long contract, and Stearns may not want to give it to him. I've been thinking about that for weeks now.
  10. Also, small sample size, like you said, but Alonso was never as good as Vientos is this year, not even in 2019. And 2019 was the year of the juiciest juice ball in the history of mankind while this year is closer to 1968, the year of the pitcher. Vientos is absolutely killing it this year.
  11. Mark Vientios is now a beast and the Mets scariest hitter. Hope his awesomeness lasts and it's not a fluke.

SNY just had about a minute long piece on Brooklyn's famous Spumoni Gardens pizzeria on the Mets broadcast. VicSage loves that place. He grew up walking distance from there. Anybody know why they showed that clip?
  13. =DocTee post_id=162054 time=1720657316 user_id=85] Personally not a fan of L&B Spumoni but different strokes for different folks. I'm more of a thin crust Grimaldis/Patsy's guy. I had the volume off so couldn't figure out why they showed that piece.

  16. https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/1810118449626329298 What ? Is this true ? I don't see what's wrong there. It looks like Pete was saying if selected for the team, he'd participate in the derby. Is Nightengale implying that Pete was selected only because he would compete in the derby? I think it's worse than that. According to a piece in The Athletic, Alonso played hardball with MLB and told MLB that he'd participate in the HR Derby only if he was also selected to the All-Star team. Apparently, Alonso had some leverage over MLB because the potential field for the Derby was greatly reduced after some injuries and opt-outs. Alonso was not an original choice for this year's Derby but after MLB's preferred field was diminished, MLB wanted Alonso very badly for the Derby, and so gave in to Alonso's demand. By getting Pete Alonso in the Home Run Derby, MLB shortchanged two of his Mets teammates Excerpt: Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor are deserving All-Stars. But neither earned spots in the fan or player voting, and Major League Baseball's desire for teammate Pete Alonso to be in the Home Run Derby prevented them from getting the Mets' only selection. Wittingly or not, Alonso created unintended consequences for Nimmo and Lindor when he said of the Derby, “If I'm selected to the All-Star team, I'm definitely open to doing it.” The league used each of its five at-large selections to account for teams that were left without a representative in the fan or player balloting. That is how Alonso became the Mets' only All-Star. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5629570/2024/07/10/pete-alonso-home-run-derby-mets-nimmo-lindor/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5629570/2024/07/10/pete-alonso-home-run-derby-mets-nimmo-lindor/ The article's kinda fudgy but I think that my interpretation is the soundest because a player doesn't have to be an All-Star selection to participate in the HR Derby.
  17. Schwerner was a huge Mets fan. From the "What are you Reading: 2015" thread (which I actually found): batmagadanleadoff Apr 08 2015 09:43 AM Re: What are you reading in 2015? [FIMG=277]http://images.betterworldbooks.com/140/Freedom-Summer-9781400167487.jpg[/FIMG] Excerpt: "In his five months in Mississippi, some had come to revile Mickey Schwerner as 'that communist Jew N****r lover.' Yet those who knew him were struck by his kindness, his easygoing manner, his lack of hatred for anyone, black or white. He was 'full of life and ideas,' 'the gentlest man I have ever known.' A coworker in Meridian paid him the compliment he would have cherished most: "More than any white person I have ever known, he could put a colored person at ease.' Of average size and height, usually dressed in a gray sweatshirt, jeans, and black sneakers, Mickey Schwerner loved W.C. Fields, a good game of poker, and the hapless New York Mets." https://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/22100/f2_t22164.shtmlhttps://phpbb3.leaptoad.com/mets/archives/22100/f2_t22164.shtml
  18. There's a scene in Mississippi Burning where the Gene Hackman character visits the home of either the Michael Rooker character or the Brad Dourif character (I forget which but I'm leaning towards Dourif) and there's a Mets/Cardinals game being broadcast on the TV in the background of the scene. I doubt very much that the verisimilitude of the scene you described is undermined at all. Nobody, not even anybody who attended that Mets/Pirates game from 60 years ago is gonna remember enough from that game to notice whether or not the movie version radio broadcast is historically accurate. Discovering some nerdy nitpick will not affect the verisimilitude of the scene. That scene appears accurate enough upon any kind of reasonable viewing. It's one thing to claim that the movie radio broadcast isn't quite accurate, but another to say that the verisimilitude of the scene is undermined. In the movies, the whiskey that the actors are supposed to be drinking is often ginger ale.

I'd say he's moving toward becoming the greatest-ever Met never make the All-Stars, but that title is currently held by teammate Brandon Nimmo, who is extending his lead. I'd say it's John Olerud. Hope you don't think this post is also a fight. Also, Nimmo never had a full season where he was clearly all-star caliber. Not that I'm knocking him. He's an asset and a nifty player to have on your team. Just pointing out his limits. Also, the way "all star" is defined is pretty fucking stupid. An all star is essentially the player who's had the best April and May. An all star is also the best player on a team through the end of June even if that player is the 120th best player in the league. Tough gig for Olerud who was AS/MVP caliber for three straight years but played first base for the Mets during the peak of the steroids era.

  22. Yeah. Real good for a sub-microscopic sample size. I'm sure there's a perfectly good explanation for why he's pitched less than 20 major league innings in his career even though he's 31 years old.
  23. That Jose Lopez?
  24. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=161509 time=1720292724 user_id=68] The most HR's the Pirates ever hit in a single game was seven. You'd figure ol' Ralph Kiner must've hit one of those seven. Or if not Kiner, then surely Willie Stargell or Dave Parker. But no. The Pirates set that record yesterday against these Mets.
