The words "fucking abomination" come to mind. And if the games are on ESPN, I guarantee they will interview the person who designed them while the action is going on. Totally disgusting. And unsurprising. What did anyone think was gonna happen as soon as MLB approved Nike logos on the unis? The slippery slope slipped to a sleeve patch. And now this. Expect a second sleeve patch next. Or if not a second sleeve patch, then permanent year-round helmet advertising, instead of just for the post-season. I could see it already. The minors are gonna wear the helmet ads. Then there'll be a bullshit made up "poll" claiming that the fans love it. And then, voila, permanent year-round helmet advertising in the majors.

The helmet advertising will also appear on all minor league helmets for the entire 2025 season.

dinosaur jesus wrote: Game 159 in 1985, against the Cardinals. If they pull it out in the eighth or ninth, they're tied with three games to go. My version of how things play out has Darling pitching the last game of the season against the Expos, rather than Gooden on three days' rest (which is just what Davey did in the first game against the Cardinals) and Gooden pitching the one-game playoff, winning his 25th and the MVP, Andujar melting down just like he eventually did in game 7 that year, and the the postseason, when they blow through the Dodgers and the Royals, as almost an anticlimax. It could have happened that way. Winning in 1986 made that one hurt less, but 1985 seemed purer somehow (though not as pure as 1984). That 1986 team was almost too good to root for. It gave me an idea of how being a Yankees fan can corrupt your soul. I thought about this game too. But too many variables for the rest of the season and the entire playoffs kept it off. Though I think the 85 team steamrolls the competition. What Mets fan wouldn't have wanted to see '85 Doc pitch in the playoffs?

Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: You out-hipped me on that one. I just thought "pickles." I'm in a real pickle phase. I'm eating about a pickle a day. Sometimes two. Or three. The other night, I woke up at four in the morning to have a pickle because I was suddenly craving one. I stayed in bed for about half an hour trying to resist the urge because I was too sleepy to get out of bed but in the end, the pickle won. Maybe I'll take a pregnancy test next week. -

Edgy MD wrote: On multiple occasions this year, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has sought to strengthen his late-game defense by either (a) putting José Iglesias in for Mark Vientos at third, ( putting Jeff McNeil in at second and sliding Iglelsias to third; or (c) putting a quality outfielder in the outfield, bringing McNeil in to play second, and sliding Iglesias over to third. They made a similar move yesterday, only putting Eddy Alvarez at second, after he entered the game as a pinch-runner at third. I don't yet know Eddy Alvarez from Adam Ottavino, but I have much respect for McNeil's defense, and admire how he has kept his head in the game on defense during some extended slumps on offense, but isn't it a stronger alignment to just put McNeil (or Alvarez)at third and keep Iglesias at second? I know McNeil hasn't played there in a while, but refamiliarization shouldn't take all that much. (Alvarez has played 10 games there this season and 88 in his career.) Iglesias to my eyes is the best defensive second baseman the Mets have had in a long time, and probably as good a combination of hand skills and foot skills as they've ever had. He's pretty much what we were hoping to see from Roberto Alomar when he came over. While Alfonzo and Flynn remain the Mets best secondbasemen (to my mind) by virtue of making a science out of the position, the only Mets comps to Iglesias I can think of — as far as combining speed, coordination, and manual dexterity at the position goes — are maybe Felix Millan and Sandy Alomar, Sr. (the latter of whom nonetheless hit his way off the roster). So why not leave him right where he is late in games? [fimg=360]https://cdn.theathletic.com/cdn-cgi/image/width=1200,height=1200,fit=cover/app/uploads/2024/06/20212048/GettyImages-2158190895-scaled.jpg[/fimg] You lost me at the third paragraph. Isn't McNeil out for the rest of the season?

The '85 squad was another Mets best team in the majors squad. The Cards three game final lead over the Mets in the standings that year was nothing more than randomness and luck. The difference was like three grains of sand from the beach at Atlantic City. I could get behind this scenario. Gooden was at his best that year in September. And in playoff baseball, the one thing you wanna have is a dominant starting pitcher that can strike batters out. Who fits that bill better than '85 Gooden? Nice to hear from you.

Tim Locastro, who played for the Mets in 2023, hit .333/.449/.479 with 2 home runs, 11 RBI and 8 stolen bases in 33 games for the Padres Triple-A club, the El Paso Chihuahuas, before getting hurt. He's now on the full-season IL. Walker Lockett, who played for the Mets in 2019 and 2020, is back playing professionally for the first time since 2021. He is with the Olmecas de Tabasco in Mexico and is 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA in 3 starts. In 14 innings, he has 20 strikeouts. Jorge Lopez, who began 2024 with the Mets, is 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA in 22 appearances for the Cubs since leaving. In 24 2/3 innings, he has 28 strikeouts. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I picked the 1973 World Series because it's the only choice that would guarantee a world championship. After that, there are NLCS games in 1988 and 2006 that would have guaranteed an additional trip to the World Series. So those would be my second-tier picks. So logical. And both the 1988 and 2006 Mets were the best teams in the majors in each of those years so I can get behind your second choices, too.

Edgy MD wrote: Jeez. Did youse actually think that that chart was gonna hold for more than three or four days? Plotting out the pitching rotations for like half the league for about a month out. Madness. No, I didn't. And I wrote that up front. I couldn't have been clearer. So then what's the point? I was being polite when I wrote "madness". It's more like OCD. I'm gonna chart out Mark Vientos's next 100 homers, when he hits them, against which pitcher and who's on base when he hits 'em. No problem if I'm off because I'll just adjust my chart as we go along. TORONTO — The New York Mets plan to shuffle their rotation this weekend in Philadelphia to better align their best starters for the biggest games of the season down the stretch. If all goes according to plan, the Mets will have Luis Severino, David Peterson and Sean Manaea in line to pitch the penultimate series of the season in Atlanta — with Severino then lined up for the final game of the regular season if needed. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5760796/2024/09/11/mets-rotation-wild-card-sean-manaea/https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5760796/2024/09/11/mets-rotation-wild-card-sean-manaea/

I didn't take a really hard look at Lindor's numbers in about two weeks. Wow! His numbers moved up greatly in that time. He has a really strong case for NL MVP if the season ended today. Maybe even the best case of anybody. Even better than Ohtani. In fact, I'd say that right now, Lindor is the front-runner for NL MVP.

Edgy MD wrote: =batmagadanleadoff post_id=168946 time=1725582946 user_id=68] So Ohtani can't win the MVP award if he wins the Hank Aaron award? Is that what the guy is saying? Definitely not. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=168946 time=1725582946 user_id=68] Or maybe he's saying that a DH can't win an MVP award?
