  1. Your interlopers are: [fimg=255]https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/529/18468215615_394e2ce65f_o.jpg[/fimg][fimg=255]https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/447/18468215625_6eedb24475_o.jpg[/fimg] Ernie Bowman: Bowman never played for the Mets, so he's an interloper as far as this thread is concerned. Bowman isn't even a Phantom Met as he never made the team's 25 man roster either. Acquired in a trade with the Braves at the end of the '65 season, Bowman was invited to the Mets spring training camp in '66 and given a shot at making the big club. He didn't, and in fact, would never make it to the majors again. Still, Topps carded Bowman, as you can see, based on Bowman's reasonable shot to make the 25 man roster of a very bad team. Instead, Bowman was assigned to the Mets Jacksonville minor league team, where he teamed with several future World Champion 1969 Mets, including Bud Harrelson and Tom Seaver. Bowman also appears in a 1981 TCMA card set featuring players from the '60's -- strangely enough, in a Mets uniform (below) -- even though the TCMA card was printed 15 years after Bowman's Spring Training invite to St. Petersburg and by then, Bowman had no chance of making the Mets big team. I found a 1963 Topps style Miller Giants custom card on the web, and "borrowed" it for this thread. I couldn't find any information connecting Miller to the Giants and the custom-card creator gave no explanation for the card's origin. So I'm declaring Miller a Mets/Giants interloper. Any better info linking Miller to the Giants would be appreciated. Help clear up the mystery of the Milller faux Giants card. So I can sleep better at night. Because, there is that picture of Miller in a Giants uniform.

But that's not a reason to ban the practice. Besides, the pitcher can always play the reverse psychology game, doing the opposite of what he thinks the batter is expecting. Also, a pitcher might want to switch his pitching hand during the same at-bat just because, or for other reasons other than trying to exploit a batter's weakness. I'm usually against rules that mainly eliminate tactics. What's the benefit of the rule, as it stands? To shave off the two or three seconds it would take a batter to move to the other side batter's box?
  3. Frayed Knot wrote: The batter can switch, too. But once the pitcher selects, the pitcher's locked into his selection for that pitch. Each pitch wipes the slate clean selection-wise. Then we're back to choice #2: the pitcher has no reason to switch because the batter will just switch on him too which gets you right back to where you started with the batter choosing what he does based on what the pitcher has chosen to do. The only difference here is that it's done on a pitch by pitch basis rather than by AB by AB -- but there'd be no pitch-by-pitch switching because there'd be no advantage for the pitcher to do so and therefore we're back to the conditions dictated by the current rule that you seem to want to blow up. Of course the pitcher might think he has an advantage in switching from pitch to pitch. The pitcher might believe that this particular switch hitter is weaker against certain types of pitches from one side and weaker against other pitches from the other side.
  4. Frayed Knot wrote: But on the next pitch, the pitcher can select all over again. But the batter can't? And, if not, all you've done is create the same rule only with the batter having to declare his intentions ahead of time instead of the pitcher. And, if so, the pitcher's got no reason to switch because the batter will just switch on him too which gets you right back to where you started with the batter choosing what he does based on what the pitcher has chosen to do. The batter can switch, too. But once the pitcher selects, the pitcher's locked into his selection for that pitch. Each pitch wipes the slate clean selection-wise.
  5. Frayed Knot wrote: As we continue to ignore the question of why the batter wouldn't then just switch to the side he wants to hit from ... AND what would get the game moving again! No. The pitcher must pitch with the pitching hand he selects. So there won't be this dance where the batter and pitcher switch sides endlessly without a pitch being thrown. But on the next pitch, the pitcher can select all over again.
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: Y'know this really isn't that difficult. Edgy MD wrote: Pitcher takes his position on the rubber, the batter has to take his in the box. But there are two boxes, so the batter is going to see what hand the glove is on and pick the opposite side. But if the pitcher isn't forced to declare then he swaps his glove to the other hand ... at which point the batter changes boxes ... at which point the pitcher switches hands ... at which point the batter changes boxes ... at which point the pitcher switches hands ... at which point the batter changes boxes ... at which point the pitcher switches hands ... at which point the batter changes boxes ... at which point the pitcher switches hands ... at which point the batter changes boxes ... at which point the pitcher switches hands ... at which point the batter changes boxes ... at which point the pitcher switches hands ... So you put in a rule which says that somebody has to make the first move and stick with it. Yeah, but the pitcher should be able to choose pitching hands from pitch to pitch.

Louis Vutton with the Fuji guitar. Why is he shirtless? Rookie Hazing Day. And what's the deal with the guitar? The Giants thought it would be high-LAR-ious to dress their rookies as nekkid singing cowboys in Times Square. How'dja know all that? Probably from maintaining that roster thread all year long. You're probably the only one here who can identify Monell out of his Mets uni. I'd bet you'd like to own a custom Don Cardwell '70 style Topps Braves card. Cardwell went to Atlanta mid-1970 and was released at the end of the year. He was done. There ain't no Cardwell Braves card and I could use one for the next card tread. That's why you need a Cardwell. And Cardwell deserves a card because he's a '69 Met. Either that or a 1961 Al Jackson in a Pirates uni. I'll make it your choice. 9. Edgy MD wrote: I'm not sure why that rule and all it's contingencies are necessary. Not sure what side the ball is coming from ... I agree. The switch-pitcher's got an advantage? Good. Let him use it. It's a fair advantage. What's next? Sidd Finch isn't permitted to throw the ball faster than 105MPH? Jeez. They turn a blind eye to steroids for 10 years and suddenly get all sanctimonious right around when Congress gets curious but when a pitcher can throw the ball with whatever hand he feels like throwing it with on any given pitch, they'll legislate against that.

That was the whole point. What's going on in that photograph of the shirtless guitar holding feller? Who is he? Why is he shirtless? And what's the deal with the guitar? First correct answer gets a custom DIY card (my choice) of a one-time Met on another team that zvonnie will gladly make for you. Zvon wrote: I am honored to have a creation on The Wall Of Giants. The two Willie cards, nickname and "then & now", are two fantastic customs. The nickname card is one of the best I've ever seen because to reproduce that font is a bitch and a half. That's the card I used for the header at http://cardartistry.forumotion.com/. The honor's all mine. If you ever got into the habit of making Padres Miller style cards (cards of Mets on another team, like your '63 Colt .45s Staub, they'd be all over these threads. And while we're quizzing, name the two interlopers atop this thread in the same post, and you'll also win a custom DIY card (my choice) of a one-time Met on another team that zvonnie will gladly make for you. Oh. And clappers. Winners get clappers, too.

  19. Ceetar wrote: actually he's exactly average at a 100 wRC+ Which puts him behind Duda, Tejada, Cuddyer, and Murphy on the team. Just glancing at that without really scrutininzing those numbers, that's a disaster. Not that I really need to study numbers to know that the Mets offense isn't very good right now. Half the starters are at or below average according to your numbers. And more importantly, ideally -- if everyone can't be above average, you wanna be above average at the positions that are expected to generate more of the offense, and below average at the traditionally weaker hitting positions. Tejada and Murph are middle infielders, and not of the Sandberg/Ripken/A-Rod variety. The Mets offense is not playoff quality right now, no matter how you spin it.

  23. It's looking like a lost opportunity for the Mets to pick up ground on the teams closest to them. Nats, Braves, Cubs and Giants all lost today.
  24. I see what you mean. But I gotta admit, I like those lolmets articles. The team deserves that kind of press. These owners are repulsive.
