  1. I'm with youse. I figured that if everyone's tastes are sorta like mine, the Mullins would romp in the first round. They still all might. But I like that 2015 cover. I don't have any recollection of it even though I'm certain I own a copy. It's probably one of those yearbooks I bought mainly out of habit and barely looked at. It reminds me of this pop art piece from the early 60s consisting of disembodied heads -- I can't remember the name of the work or the artist at the moment. If there was ever a yearbook candidate for a revised edition, 2015 might be the archetype. Cuddyer would be out, and Noah, Conforto, Matz and Babe Ruth Cespedes would be in. But do I like it more than the Mullin? I'm not sure.
  2. Because Harvey has at least five years service time, the Mets would need his consent to assign him to the minors. Interesting -- Harvey came up seven seasons ago, but pitched more than 100 innings in a season only twice.
  3. What if the Mets decide they don't want Harvey around for a while but don't wanna release him? They could DL him with some fake injury --- if Harvey goes along with the ruse. Or you could have another ugly Ollie Perez situation with Harvey taking up a spot on the 25 even though the Mets might be loathe to use him.

You're only optimistic Mets fan and Mr. Small Sample Size when it fits who you like for whatever reasons. Lagares is less obvious, depends how you feel about defense, but fine, call Bruce the 4th outfielder if you like. Lagares is a dreadful hitter, a minor league hitter, really, if even that. But Bruce's splits are so pronounced that he's awful against lefties, about as bad as Lagares is against lefties, albeit with more power. But when you factor in Lagares's defense, Bruce should almost never be starting against lefties over Lagares.

Were the '69 Mets baseball's first growth hormone cheaters? Lookit Time Mag Mets' way oversized head relative to his child-sized body. That cover portends Big Barry's Big Steroid Head and David Wright's oversized Great Gazoo batting helmet. I'm wondering if Mullin was in on it. Maybe he got a hold of ol' Doc's DeLorean time machine and drove 40 years into the future to get the PED's and David Wright's Gazoo helmet to cover up kid Met's suddenly oversized head. This might be the most logical way to explain the Mets going from whatever they were in 1968 with Phil Linz and Jerry Buchek to winning 100 regular season games and beating the O's in the WS.

  9. Because the baseball gods are crazy, with the Mets missing both Scherzer and Strasburg this series, the Nats'll probably sweep the Mets.
  10. Is this the Mets yearbook cover derby or the Mets jersey derby? What are we supposed to be judging here? Anyway, the 1993 Mets jerseys with the tails/flourishes aren't ugly. They're classic baseball jersey design -- perhaps the most common uni front design in the sport's history -- the team name in cursive script and underlined. If the Mets went with that design in 1962 ( and actually, they did, up until the 11th hour) ugly would've been about the last word used to describe the trademark. Pointless? Probably. This is around the time eff Wilpon asserted himself as the team's 100% de facto owner and perhaps he wanted to mark his territory with a radical (and otherwise needless) break from tradition. The 1993 gets my vote over the boring 1986 cover. Sometimes, understated elegance doesn't cut it. And no bonus points for winning it all that season. We're voting yearbook covers here, not uniforms. And not W-L records.
  11. The magic number for the Mets to eliminate the Nats from winning the division is 142.
  12. What's going on in the Mets dinky afterthought of a Hall of Fame Museum that exists only because eff Wilpon runs this team in large part based on what the masses might gripe about? Is it still there? Anything new and interesting? Is the big inspiration still to replace the jersey of an '86 Met that was on display last year with the jersey, this year, of a different '86 Met? I thought it'd be fitting to bring this up on Jackie Robinson Day since the museum only exists because of the backlash from the inauguration of a Mets stadium whose most prominent features were a lookalike exterior of the Brooklyn Dodgers' stadium and a grand entrance honoring a Brooklyn Dodgers ballplayer (that never even played for the Mets).

  15. He's always griping, unreasonably, about pitch-framing, every single time it comes up here. Like he wants to deny the reality of it because he cant stand that it exists. There's nothing that can be done about it because the ump can't call precise balls and strikes at the edge of the plate. The catcher's mitt blocks the umps vision of the ball as it nears the plate. He'd need x-ray vision to overcome the catcher's ability to pitch-frame to get an undeserved strike call.

I just gave these yearbook covers the quick look-see and decided I liked the spanish one better. I went with my eyeballs, without much thought. I'm wondering if eff and jeff took over the yearbook duties during this period because they got dumbed down big time, AFAIK. These are the yearbooks where Mets answered vapid Playmate of the Month type questions and responded much as you'd expect MLB'er's to respond, rubes that they mostly are, with several Mets naming scumbag money laundering swindler and bullshit artist Donald Trump the person they'd most like to meet. The 1990 Mets went heavy with their starters in their ad campaigns and promotional materials. Armed and Ready, including jumbo sized advertising posters featuring their aces throughout the city. [fimg=664]https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/vEUAAMXQcVNQ8yIG/s-l400.jpg[/fimg] Does anyone know what that ad tag line's supposed to mean? Getting home after the game? When should they get home? Where the hell was Don Draper?

  22. I just determined the time and place of that 71 cover: July 25, 1970, 6th inning. That's Manny Mota out at home; he was going for an inside the park, 2-run home run but was retired 9-4-2! The Mets rallied for 4 runs in the 7th to win 6-4. Dave Marshall took the Shaefer honors with a pinch-hit 3-run jack. http://www.ultimatemets.com/gamedetail.php?gameno=1402 That's Shag Crawford doing the home plate umping. The '71 is the first Mets yearbook I got at the ballgame, which I probably devoured during BP, including the informational blurb providing details of the cover photo.
  23. Not only did NL baseball return to NYC with the debut of the Mets, but so did yearbook cover artist supreme, Willard Mullin, with his baby Mets cover. Mullin regularly illustrated the Giants and Dodgers yearbook covers up until their last NY seasons. Look hard enough and you can see baby Mets' whole life ahead of him. It's all there. The struggles to carve out an identity, the setbacks, the progress, the unforgettable triumphs and the inevitable tragedies and dissapointments. And those moments of misquided what were they thinking bad judgment. Like those horrible eggplant colored bruise hued black caps.

Donates entire years income to making the bionic implants a viable cure for spinal stenosis. 7 HR in the World Series, front and center of the World Series parade. Does a lot of press during the offseason. His new nickname is Cyborg. Something seems off in his demeanor in his offseason press tour though, but we just chalk it up to all he's gone through. He's still mashing in April 2019, but he's developed a temper. May 3rd he literally steps in front of Amed Rosario to make a play. Rosario has words, and it almost comes to blows. Things calm down for a while after that, Wright is apologetic and seemingly back to normal until May 22nd. On May 22nd, a schedule off day, Cespedes is scheduled to bat in the bottom of the 9th of a game the Mets are trailing 3-2. Cespedes is in a 3 for 29 slump but we're hoping this will break him out of it. Conforto walks and Cespedes puts his bat down when David leaps out of the dugout and tells Cespedes he's being pinch hit for. Cespedes, livid, goes to yell at Mickey who had no idea, while David takes the at-bat. David homers to walk it off but instead of a pileup at home Cespedes is halfway up the third base line screaming at him. Gelbs tries to get Wright to do the usual post-game interview on the field but Wright shoves him aside and goes into the clubhouse. His postgame comments amount to "Yoenis was going to strike out. I won the game, what more do you want?" David and Cespedes are not in the lineup the next day and the press is locked out from the clubhouse. No one will comment. The next day it's announced that both players are on the DL. Cespedes with facial contusions, Wright with an unspecified illness. It's the last we ever see of David in a Mets uniform. This is the best post in all of the Expectations threads, combined.
  25. The floating disembodied heads don't bother me as much as they seem to bother some of youse. Still, they don't mix well with rest of the design cover. I would've voted for the '69 cover if not for the heads. It's a nice enough shot and I like the effect that the film stock gives off, which Is reminiscent of the photography of its time and doesn't remind me of a Kodak Instamatic. In the end, I voted for the 2011 yearbook, but only by default. The long shot of Citi Field does nothing for me. I have no love or any emotional attachments to the Mets current stadium, which, to me, is a cheesy mashup of mismatched parts, essentially copied from every other stadium that recently preceded it. The stadium is dead to me. And that hideous, embarrassing, ugly monstrosity of a scoreboard.
