It's also the #1 album on the vinyl charts. We here at Typrewriter Chewing Gum are not aloof to this, and so we've re-tweaked our Corey Oswalt card in tribute. One, two three, four, five, six seven. All good children go to heaven. It'd be nice if some of youse, any of youse would actually buy these cards at a store near you to help keep our lights on. But youse never give me your money. Pitch Framing in the Robtic-Ump Age
batmagadanleadoff replied to kcmets's topic in New York Mets Talk
Hey dudes, I said all that about how a robo ump isn't gonna replace a human ump. This was about pitch framing and the concern that a pitch framer can fool the robo ump the same way he fools a human ump. I don't see how so long as the robo ump works properly. The robo ump's methodology for determining balls and strikes is completely different from that of a human ump. For starters, and finishers, the robo ump's view won't be obstructed. Jeez, we have cameras that can see in super high definition from like 10 football fields away. -

=batmagadanleadoff post_id=23746 time=1570198911 user_id=68] And what does pitch framing have anything to do with AI or robo-umping in the first place? The robo ump follows the ball all the way through an area that's been calibrated to be the strike zone. The robo ump doesn't give a shit about the catcher's movements. -

Edgy MD wrote: Some umps believe the whole ball should be in the zone, others want to see the meridian of the ball pass through the zone, and still others will give you a strike if a single stitch passes over the black. As far as I understand the rule book, that third guy is most correct, but he's probably not representative of the mainstream. That's the easy part. Just enforce the rule. And if it's a robo-ump, then it's even easier. Just program the robo ump to call a strike if so much as a sliver of a hair of the ball crosses the strike zone. -
It's Fonebone Friday and we're still in a tweaky kind of mood here at Typewriter Chewing Gum, makers of the best Batman Mets baseball cards in the whole wide world. And on this Fonebone Friday, it's Callaway went Thataway Day. And to celebrate, we've got a coupl'a subtle tweaks of ol' 36 himself, Mickey Callaway and OG 36, the Kooz, whose number's gonna be retired pretty soon, even if Gary Carter is whining publically to Dick Young that his #8 should be retired first, because what the hell did Jerry Koosman ever do for the Mets that Gary Carter himself didn't do 20 times over, sez Gary Carter. So good riddance to Mickey and happy 36. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48841762988_0a049b191c_c.jpg> https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48842133426_805e2f25ce_c.jpg> Plus a tweak of Keon Broxton that's so substantial, it's probably a makeover and not a tweak. We made the original Broxton card so long ago that, to tell you the truth, we already forgot who this Broxton character is. Anyone wanna write in and tell us who exactly Keon Broxton is? The best letter will win a free Batman card. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48842137591_dc3178e368_c.jpg>

Pitch Framing in the Robtic-Ump Age
batmagadanleadoff replied to kcmets's topic in New York Mets Talk
Why wouldnt it? And why "when the time comes"? I'm certain that this was technologically achieved years ago, and that therefore, the technology is already advanced enough to call a dead-accurate ball or strike. I've heard some say that maybe it's not quite there yet (from non-MLB people, so not just pro-game/umpire stuff) but I'm not sure if they're right or not. There's perhaps some fuzziness around it that would need to be firmed up if we went automated, player height, player's knee height, etc. HARD strikezone edges. And it they might need to come in or up or down a few cm or something. It's possible the umps are calling balls on pitches that are barely ticking the corner of the back of the zone that are technically strikes and that those pitches might be virtually unhittable (operating under the assumption that a ball "in" the zone is a hittable one and if you don't you're penalized) There's also hard proof that the strike zone is smaller on 0-2 and larger on 3-0. This almost definitely wouldn't be the case with a camera, but all of the players have this stuff ingrained into muscle memory and the like. it'll be a huge adjustment that first year, and likely messy. Sure. My understanding is that the main glitches or holdups are not with the technology itself, but with the huge social implications that will come by replacing human umps with robotic balls and strikes callers. And will home plate umps be replaced entirely, or will they remain to call safe/out plays at home, and to decide whether a batter checked his swing or not, or whether he fouled tipped the ball as opposed to completely whiffing on it? And come to think of it, as I'm writing this post, I doubt that the home ump will be replaced, at least in my lifetime. MLB will simply install a robot ball/strike caller when the time comes. -

Will artificial intelligence be advanced enough when the time comes to know if a pitch doesn't enter the strike zone but a catcher magically moves the ball to to a seemingly better spot it must be a strike? Why wouldnt it? And why "when the time comes"? I'm certain that this was technologically achieved years ago, and that therefore, the technology is already advanced enough to call a dead-accurate ball or strike. Also, you meant "must not be a strike, right? -

I've met Cookie Rojas a number of times and he is really nice! Cue BatMags going off on what a bad guy Rojas is... Well, I would if I knew. But the last thing I remember about this guy is that he was a Mets coach at the same time Mookie Wilson was also a coach, going back about 20 years and those hideous black uniforms. What I mostly remember is that if you saw Cookie's first name --"Cookie" -- spelled out, you'd figure it rhymes with Mookie, which is spelled just like Cookie except for a different first letter. But Cookie and Mookie don't rhyme.

I thought he'd be great at handling the bullpen because, well, because he said all the right things. And because over his last two seasons at Cleveland, the Tribe had arguably the best reliever in baseball over that time, Andrew Miller, who had comparatively few saves and was used like an elite reliever oughtta be used -- in high leverage situations, to hell with the save. I guess that was the manager's thing and not Callaway the pitching coach's thing -- at least going by the way he handled the Mets pen.

So, Mickey Gets Another Half Year... Right?
batmagadanleadoff replied to kcmets's topic in New York Mets Talk
The Mets haven't hired an "experienced" manager in more than 20 years -- and that's saying something. Think about that sentence instead of just glossing over it as if it were a cliche. And now Jeff Wilpon has major input into things. He's a bully at heart and so he wouldn't want an experienced manager. And an experienced manager has options and if he's got options, why the fuck would he want to manage for this dysfunctional train wreck of an organization? Surprise me. The only guy they hired before Callaway with no experience was a guy who has the second highest winning percentage in team history, Willie Randolph. I didn't "literally" mean no experience. For that, they woulda hadda hire me. And the Mets had that high winning percentage despite Willie Randolph. He was a liability, not an asset and if there was WAR for managers, I'm certain Willie's would be negative. But Willie was handed a goddamn Ferrari pretty much right out of the box. You could argue, very plausibly, that no Mets manager in franchise history was handed a better squad to start with, than Willie Randolph. He had everything. He had two budding superstar/MVP candidates that weren't even arbitration eligible, owners that were buying top free agents and trading for players that commanded among the highest salaries in the game. And all he fucking wanted to do was bunt with the #2 hitter. Even in the first innings. Even in the first innings of games played in fucking Denver, where you should know that you're probably gonna need about eight runs to win a game there. Even in the first innings of games played in fucking Denver where your leadoff hitter, who also happened to be the fastest guy in the majors at the time, was already on second base before the #2 hitter even stepped into the batter's box. -

Edgy MD wrote: I've been to DC several times but always managed to miss Ben's Chili. Am I missing anything good? It's chili. It's good and greasy but not too greasy. You won't feel duped but neither will it change your life. It's just, like, the last black thing the gentrification of DC has left standing so its sentimental value is enormous. Ben Ali, I think, was from an Indian family, but he grew up in the Caribbean and went to Howard U., and his restaurant is the sole remnant of what DC formerly called "Black Broadway" down on U Street. Obviously, you'll get better fare at the U Street location, but the ballpark stuff isn't a great dropoff from there and it's reasonably priced with fast lines. Bring your cholesterol pills. Thanks. I love chili when it's to my liking. By no means am I a chili expert or connoisseur or one of those chili heads that goes to the cookoffs and gets into the minutia of chili with these rigid rules that so many chili heads follow, like whether it's supposed to have beans or meat or not supposed to have beans or meat and how it's chili sacrilege to violate those to have or have not rules. That's not me. I just like it. And every time I went to DC, I made plans in my head to hit up Ben's Chili, but something always happened to derail those plans to go to Ben's. Anyways, NYC, for all it's big market stuff and all, is a terrible chili town. Dreadful. -
Reminds me of the old days, the very old days, the days way way way before the internet -- when a Robert de Niro movie was a major event -- and I'd learn as much about the movie as I possibly could before its release. It's been ages, like a generation.
